Champlain Valley Always A State Title Contender

HINESBURG, Vt. - The opportunity to repeat never presented itself for Champlain Valley Union High School due to the consolation of the 2020 high school season a year ago.

However, two key players return for veteran coach Tim Albertson making the coming season a promising one for the Redhawks.

“With only two returning players, the team will look different,” noted Albertson, who has a 153-53 record and four state titles - 2003, 2012, 2013 and 2019 - during his time at the helm. “However, many of the players have grown up playing baseball together.”

Ryan Eaton, the 14th-rated 2021 outfielder in New England, and Ryan Canto, a right-handed pitcher/infielder, are back to lead Champlain Valley, which last saw the field with a 5-2 win over Mount Mansfield in the 2019 state championship game to complete an 18-1 campaign.

Braedon Jones, Oliver Pudvar, Jared Anderson, Jack Richburg and Hunter Whitman are other players that Albertson is pointing to with optimism entering the 2021 campaign. Jones is the 29th-ranked 2022 RHP in New England who also plays shortstop while Pudvar is the 34th-rated junior LHP who could see time in the outfield. Anderson is the 57th-ranked 2022 RHP in the area who will also play third base and in the outfield while Richburg is another right-handed pitching prospect that plays third base. Whitman is an infielder.

“Our pitching and defense will be the keys to our success,” explained Albertson, now in his 13th year at the helm of the Redhawks. “I like their camaraderie and work ethic.”

Rice, Essex, South Burlington, Mt. Mansfield and Brattleboro are teams to watch out for in Vermont this season according to Albertson.
