Cherokee Trail Overpowers Smoky Hill 15-5

Aurora - Cherokee Trail (10-2) entered Thursday’s matchup against the Smoky Hill Buffaloes (3-10) intent on trying to advance on their 3rd place standing in the Centennial Conference with the playoffs just around the corner.  They showed the desire with an impressive offensive onslaught that included 14 hits and 15 RBI’s, 6 coming off the bat of senior OF Matt Meraz (Shoreline CC commit).

Cherokee Trail scored 3 runs in the top of the 1st, with a double to LF by Meraz scoring Jr Conner Nantkes, Nick Perez and Sr Ryan Sullivan (Iowa Western commit).  Smoky Hill would add 1 run in the bottom of the inning off an infield sacrifice by Sr Parker Friedentag scoring Matt McDermott.  Score was 3-1 thru 1 full inning of play.

Trail would add another run after Metro State commit Jerome Bohannon (1-2 on the day) was hit by a pitch, OF Eric Cox laced a double to LF scoring Bohannon.  In the bottom of the 2nd, Trail starting pitcher Tyler Lederhos made quick work shutting down the Buffaloes notching 2 of his 4 strikeouts on the day.  4-1 end of 2 innings of play.  In the bottom of the 3rd Sr Travis Lynch crushed a 2 run HR to CF extending Trail’s lead to 6-1. 

In the top of the 4th, Cherokee Trail would tack on 4 more runs thanks to a sac fly by Nick Perez, and a 3-run bomb by player of the game Matt Meraz.  Smoky Hill would add a run making the score 10-2 thru 4 innings of play.  

Cherokee Trail put up another crooked number in the top of the 5th adding 5 runs highlighted by a solo shot to CF by Bohannon, an RBI single by Meraz and 2 run jack to CF by Sullivan giving Trail an insurmountable 15-2 lead.  In the bottom of the 5th Parker Friedentag hit a 3-run homer to CF but it wasn’t enough as relief pitch Isaac Hayen shut the Buffaloes down the rest of the way ending the game after 5 innings of play.

Up next for Cherokee Trail, they are set for a showdown at home with the 2nd place Mullen Mustangs today 5/6.  Smoky Hill will get a chance for revenge on Saturday 5/7 at Cherokee Trail.
