Colorado Notebook (Playoff Edition)

By John Cackowski
State Director

Senior Chase Dunker of 2A Sedgwick County has struck out 108 of a possible 128 outs this year.

90% of the people reading this notebook have played street wiffle ball and if we all throw as fast as we can from 40 feet away our average k rate would probably be 50%.

Chase Dunker’s ERA this season is 0.16.

Shout out to Zane Phelps of Bayfield High School. Kid led 3A in home runs (7) RBI’s (37) slugging (1.150) and was one run away from leading in runs (37) Good season.

In 3A, #1 seed Eaton shut out Denver Science and Tech 10-0 and St. Mary’s 11-0 to advance to Final 8. Coach Danley of Eaton has gone on national tours to teach about the knuckle curve. Why doesn’t anyone in our state consider using this pitch?

#2 seed Holy Family of 3A beat Pagosa Springs 17-0 and Platte Valley 10-0 to advance and #3 seed Faith Christian beat Coal Ridge 10-0 then Manitou Springs10-0 to advance. Maybe they use the knuckle curve ball also.

Eaton has outscored their opponents 280-26. Holy Family has outscored their opponents 302 to 59.

In 4A, #29 seed Pueblo West, #31 seed Broomfield and #32 Coronado all had losing records this season and took down the #4 seed Delta, #2 seed Windsor, and #1 seed Montrose who were a combined 48 and 6 on the season.

Pueblo West, Broomfield, and Coronado would go on to lose in the district championship games.

Pueblo East, West, and South all advanced to 4A district championship games.

All Pueblo Teams would lose in District championship games by a combined total of 5 runs.

That doesn’t change the fact Pueblo has good baseball.

Daniel Gibbins of Evergreen, Wyatt Featherston of Green Mountain, Hayden Gerlach of Valor, and Nick Ricigliano of Wheat Ridge all are tied for 2nd in 4A with 6 home runs hit on the season.

All four of those guys are still playing in Final 8.

Grant Witherspoon of D’Evelyn still leads 4A with 7.

If anyone wants to see a Colorado D-1 pitcher who almost lives in the mountains (Evergreen) go check out Brock Burke who is going to Oregon. They play Palmer Ridge at 10 a.m. at All-Star Park.

David Peterson of Regis is committed to Oregon also

It seems like in 5A everyone is upset on how the wildcard points choose the last 8 teams, and in 4A how the wildcard points choose the top 8 teams.

Douglas County was practicing to play Fairview on Wednesday then was asked to turn in uniforms on Thursday. Mullen was turning in uniforms on Wednesday and then they were passed back out on Thursday.

Fairview beat Mullen 8-3 on Saturday morning.

What happened in the Arvada West-Horizon game? First time we have seen a walk off hit that didn’t win.

Minnesota commit Lucas Gilbreath struck out 111 batters this year throwing consistently in upper 80’s.

Raltson Valley’s Jordan Holloway was pumping low 90’s against Castleview on Saturday.

Brody Hagel-Pitt for Arvada West is one scary big kid at the plate.

Player who had a great season this year was Kansas commit Columbine senior pitcher Blake Weiman.

Fairview has won 16 games in a row and 20 for the season, and they outscored Mullen and Arapahoe on Saturday by a combined total of 21 to 4.

Out of the 20 total wins Fairview has this season, a Ryan has won 18 of the them. Hawaii Pacific commit Ryan Kokora and Ryan Madden with 9 each.

Rocky Mountain has won 13 games in a row and outscored Bear Creek and Grandview on Saturday 22 to 1.  They started the season 3-5

How many teams in recent history have been able to say “Yeah..well we have a Stajduhar”

Between Fairview and Rocky who is hotter?

Regis has won 15 games in a row.

Regis and Rocky Mountain play at 12:30 at Machebeuf. It’s impossible for a win streak not to end.

Will Regis D-1 pitching staff pitch to a Stajduhar?

Regis has an A.S.U, Rice, Oregon State, Oregon, Rice, Pacific, and Northern Colorado, and Garden City commit.

Are enough people talking about Regis sophomore Quin Cotton?

Chaparral and Mountain Vista played to a 2-1 Mountain Vista win on 4-21. Nick Leonard and Brad Brown pitched complete games and each gave up only 2 hits and they play each other Friday at All-City at 12:30.

Will they pitch against each other again?

Over under on how many walk off home runs Chatfield hits next weekend?

They have hit 29 homeruns this season.

All-City is a big field

People should be talking about sophomore Jake Eissler of ThunderRidge. Kid is big and strong, and pumps mid 80’s fastballs into the strike zone.

Is Ty Loptien to ThunderRidge what Mariano Rivera was to Yankees?

When ThunderRidge has a lead after 5 innings they should play the song “Enter Loptien”

That’s because his ERA for 2013 and 2014 is 0.00.

If you look up in a thesaurus “finding ways to win” Cherry Creek will be part of the definition.

In Cherry Creek’s last 100 games, they have won 81 times.

Not many states have a coach that has coached for over 40 years and has won over 700 high school baseball games.

Congratulations again to Head Coach Marc Johnson.

It’s snowing in Colorado on Mother’s Day 2014.
