PBR: Why did you choose the school you did?

Winkels: I chose St. Cloud State because I felt it would give me the best opportunity in both school and in baseball.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Winkels: NDSU, Augustana, UMary, St. Johns, St. Scholastica.

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you? How did your relationship develop with him?

Winkels: I have been going to their camps since I was in about 4th grade and attended their scouting camp as a 9th grade and again this past summer. Coach Dolan also saw me at PBR over the summer. He contacted me after these events to come for a visit and that’s when I knew it was the school for me.

PBR: Do you feel relieved now that the process is over and you can just focus on baseball and not deal with everything that goes into picking a school?

Winkels: Yes, I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

PBR: Was there one deciding factor that put your choice over the top?

Winkels: I really like how the coaches want their players to get a good education.

PBR: Who has helped you the most to get to where you are today?

Winkels: My parents. Without them driving me to practices and games 4-5 times a week when I was young, I would not have been able to become the player I am today.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it easy/difficult?

Winkels: I didn’t really know what to expect. PBR helped me get in front of a lot of college coaches which helped a lot. I think the most difficult part was researching colleges to see if they would be a good fit for academics and baseball.

PBR: What plans does the coaching staff have in store for you in your freshman season?

Winkels: They plan to use me as a pitcher, but Coach Dolan is giving me the opportunity to hit as well.

PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?

Winkels: Getting my first varsity win as a freshman.

PBR: Who is the best player that you have competed against?

Winkels: Dylan Haskamp. We always had good battles on the mound and at the plate.
