DBacks Scout Day - Quick Hits Part 1

Buddy Gouldsmith
Nevada Scouting Director

LAS VEGAS, NV – On Wednesday, November 14th at Desert Oasis High School, PBR Nevada hosted its first Scout Day. We could not have drawn up a better day of weather in the Southern Nevada valley but keep in mind going forward, the track for the 60 yard dash was a bit slow spongy and wet.  Below we note some of the top postional performers in each class.

2019

Zac Czerniawski, SS, Czerniawski put up the best 60 yard dash time at 6.91 on scout day.  He has an athletic build with wiry strength.  He has solid infield actions throwing out of a low ¾ slot.  He showed enough arm strength to stay on the left side of the infield and the athleticism to improve arm strength as well as the ability to develop multiple angle throws.  He maintains an aggressive swing with strength in his barrel.  Czerniawski continues to impress and possesses room for growth both physically and his skill set.

Santino DiMauro, 2B, Small frame, 5-foot-7, 130, DiMauro has limited projection, but is the consummate small college performer type player.  With high end value as a small college, or junior college everyday second baseman out of high school, he knows how to manage his skill set. He gives best effort, play in and play out, with capable infield actions.  At the plate, he employs a no-stride approach which tends to bring him out of his legs quickly.  When he syncs up, he can impact the baseball.

2020

Colby Smith, SS, Athletic, 5-foot-11, 165, Smith is still physically developing and projectable.  His youthful appearance reveals that there is plenty of time and room for addtional weight and strength.  He has good infield actions with the ability and feel for multiple angle throws and enough arm to stay on the left side of the infield.  In the box, he maintains a solid hitting rhythm and loads his hands back to a good launch position.  He has some natural loft to his swing which makes it easy to see signs of future power.  Size and strength increases accompanied by present range and speed, may lend better to third base.

2021

William Bueining, OF, Lean, 5-foot-11, 160, Buening has an athletic build with wiry strength.  Just a sophomore, he showed the top arm strength from the outfield with a positional velocity of 83.  His throwing footwork is efficient and carries natural actions for the position.  At the plate, he has a strong positive move, staying in his legs well as he looks to pull with a solid combination of strength and bat speed.  Presently, his swing is a bit rotational, loading to almost an arm bar, but bat plane is good and maturity will provide development.

Dylan Dirig, C, Projectable, 5-foot-10, 150, Dirig has an athletic build with room to add weight and strength.  Although he maintains the athleticism to play multiple positions, he profiles best behind the dish.  He sits well and displays soft hands with instincts for the catching position. He has benefited from catching some high end velocity high school arms and is easy to see as a Division 1 receiver in the future.  With a wide stance and no stride, Dirig hits off his backside with a slight uphill plane.

2022

Gavin Mansell, OF, Projectable, 5-foot-5, 120, Mansell has a youthful athletic build.  He displays solid arm strength and actions for the outfield positions.  He is a true and accurate thrower with carry from his high ¾ release.  In the box, he displays a balanced all fields approach with solid bat plane and looseness in his barrel.  Mansell was as intriguing as any hitter at scout day and eyes will be on him for quite some time.
