Williamsville 10, Pawnee 3

The Bullets opened up Sangamo Conference play in impressive fashion with a 10-3 thumping of Pawnee (0-2; 0-1). Bullet Clinton Fletcher led the Williamsville (2-1; 1-0) attack with a pair of doubles and three RBI. Skylar Arnberger (1-0) picked up the win with a one-hit, six strikeout performance. Pawnee’s Ethan Horton went deep for the Indians.

No. 9 St. Rita 11, Oak Lawn 1 (5 innings)

With thermometer readings near freezing, St. Rita (1-0) rolled past Oak Lawn 11-1 in five innings, in the season-opener for both clubs. St. Rita head coach Mike Zunica spent four hard days getting his outstanding field in shape and sent out his Mustangs into Chicago winter-type conditions, to roll past the Spartans.

Austin Peay-recruit junior LHP Mike Constanzo allowed one run and two hits in his fine four-inning stint on the mound to pick up the win. Senior Connor McClain, along with senior Troy Payton had two hits, scored two runs and drove home two Mustang runs. Payton had a double.  

No. 29 Bloomington 1, Stagg 0

The Purple Raiders improved to 2-0 with a thrilling 1-0 victory over Stagg on Saturday. Raider senior Jake Scogin (1-0) pitched six shutout innings in relief of Purple Raider ace Kent Frantz. Scogin gave himself the win with a game-winning RBI in the first inning.

Stagg 5, No. 29 Bloomington 4

In game two, Stagg (1-1) tied things up in the top of the seventh at 4-4 on a clutch RBI single by Charger senior Vito Cali. Later in the inning Scali scored the eventual winning-run on a wild pitch. Charger junior Max Strus (1-0) was dominant in relief, firing three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and fanning six Purple Raider batsmen to pick up the win.

Junior Drew Bolero led the Charger attack with two hits and two RBI. Bloomington (2-1) in game two was led by senior Roman Visintine who had three hits.

No. 31 Alton 12-19, Murphysboro 8-0 (Second game five-innings)

Alton’s (3-0) Indiana-bound C Brent Gibbs was 1-for-4, for the second straight game, in the Redbirds 12-8 first game victory over host Murphysboro. Entering the second game with an uncommon .250 batting average, the future Hoosier exploded with four hits, including his first round-tripper of the season and drove home seven big Redbird runs as Alton demolished Murphysboro 19-0 in five innings.

 In the game two win, senior CF Ron Wisnasky had four hits and drove home a pair. Senior 1B Nick Droste had three hits and two RBI and junior LF Nick Paulda hammered a grand-slam and drove in five. Senior Ben Baldidge (1-0) was outstanding allowing just one hit in his 4 2/3 innings of work.

In game one, the Redbirds jumped out to a big lead and had to hang on for a 12-8 win. Junior Logan Spiller had two hits and three RBI to lead the Alton attack. Paulda plated a pair and junior SS Matt Halliday drove home two with a double. Senior RHP Ray Baily 9-1 in 2012, picked up his first victory of the season.

No. 45 Troy-Triad 6, Alton Marquette 1

SIU-Edwardsville-bound senior 1B Keaton Wright led the No. 45-ranked Knights past Alton Marquette 6-1 on Saturday. Wright had three hits and drove in four runs to lead Troy-Triad (2-0) to the win. Sophomore Dalton Johnson had three hits and plated the other two Knight tallies.

Senior Lucas Infante (1-0) allowed one hit in his three innings to pick up the win. Infante struck out 5. Senior J.T. Barras fired four hitless innings of relief to nail down the save.

Bartlett (TN) 10, No. 32 O’Fallon 0

Auburn 8-16; Hillsboro 7-2

Auburn (2-1) swept a twin-bill from Hillsboro (1-2), rallying from a 6-2 deficit to win game one 8-7, and then hammering the Hilltoppers 16-2 in five innings in the nightcap. In game one, the Trojans spotted Hillsboro leads of 6-2 after 3 innings and 7-5 after four innings, only to rally for a thrilling 8-7 victory.

Trojan senior Austin Pruiett singled and homered, driving in three big Trojan runs. Senior Jeremy Gladden had two doubles, two RBI and scored twice in this thriller.

In game two, Auburn destroyed Hillsboro 16-2 in five innings as Pruiett and Gladden continued their attack on the baseball. Pruiett had a perfect 4-for-4 game, with a double and three RBI. Gladden was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Senior Austin Muench had two hits, including a double and plated a pair of Trojan runs.

In game two, Gladden (1-0) was the beneficiary of the Trojan onslaught, picking up the win on the mound with two scoreless innings. In game one, junior Evan Ackerson (1-0) picked up the win on the mound and Muench nailed down the save.

Mount Zion 10-22, Decatur Eisenhower 0-0 (first game 6 innings) (second game five innings)

Mount Zion (2-0) opened up its season by overwhelming Decatur Eisenhower (0-2), winning game one 10-0 in six innings and then completing the sweep with a 22-0 win in five innings in the nightcap.

Connor Wilhoit ignited the Braves offense in game one, with a 3-for-4 day at the plate. The Mt. Zion slugger hammered his first home run of 2013 and plated four Brave runs. Winning pitcher Dylan Dunn went the distance fanning 11 to improve to 1-0 on the season.

In game two, junior Tyler Durand (1-0) fired a five-inning no-no at the Panthers. Durand fanned eight. Brody Rothrock and Grant Geisler led the Brave offense. Rothrock and Geisler both had perfect 2-for-2 days at the plate with four RBI. 

Mascoutah 10, Lebanon 1

Mascoutah (2-0) routed Lebanon 10-1 behind senior OF Zach Lindsay, who had two hits, including a double and drove in three Indian runs. Junior Austin Waugh (1-0) allowed one hit and one unearned run in his solid outing on the mound to pick up the win. Waugh struck out 5.

Freeburg 7, Mascoutah 4

The Midgets had only five hits but they were enough as Freeburg (1-0) handed Mascoutah (2-1) its first loss of the season 7-4 on Saturday. Junior C Nick Yung led the Midget attack with a pair of RBI. Fellow junior battery-mate Milton Pinkston (1-0) picked up the win.

In their second game of the day the Indians were led by senior Tyler Green who had two hits and two RBI.

Columbia 7-8, Piasa Southwestern 6-0

The Eagles of Columbia (2-0) opened their 2013 season with a bang, sweeping Piasa Southwestern 7-6 and 8-0 on Saturday. In the 7-6 game one victory, Eagle seniors Evan Drake, Brendan DePoy and Cole Mallinckrodt all had two hits and two RBI. Senior Blake Meyer (1-0) was the winning pitcher.

In the nightcap, DePoy had a single, two doubles and a triple with an RBI to lead the Eagles past Piasa S.W. (0-2). Senior Reed Greating (1-0) allowed two hits in his five spotless innings to pick up the win. Greating struck out five Piasa Birds.

Carlyle 4-10, Flora 0-4

The Indians improved to 3-1 with a sweep of Flora on Saturday. In the 4-0 game one win, senior Cody Jackson went the distance and fired a five-hit shutout. Jackson had five strikeouts. Sophomore Gunner Bretz drove home half of the Indian runs in support of Jackson.

In the game two win, Jackson used his bat driving home three to lead the Indians past Flora (0-2). Junior Ethan Huge (1-0) slammed the door on Flora firing 3 2/3 innings of hitless relief to pick up the win.
