Class 2A Sectional Semifinals

BENEDICTINE

Lisle 4, Walther Lutheran 1
Lisle (19-10-1) cruised past Walther Lutheran behind ace LHP Alex Ventrella. Ventrella was exceptional on the mound, firing a two-hitter at the Broncos with 12 strikeouts. The lone Bronco run was unearned. Ventrella had a solid day at the plate with two hits and an RBI. Senior Ryan Von Volkenburg doubled and had an RBI for the Lions. Brian Czyl was 2-for-2 and Cliff Krause chipped in with two hits.

Noble Street Rauner 12, Francis Parker 8

NASHVILLE

Carlyle 2 Nashville 1
Carlyle (25-7) slipped past Nashville behind junior Logan Zachry and senior C Kyle Jackson. Jackson’s two-run double in the third drove home the only runs Zachry would need. Zachry fired a five-hitter at the Hornets with eight strikeouts to improve to 5-1.

MONTICELLO

St. Joseph-Ogden 6, Argenta-Oreana 3
St. Joseph-Ogden (25-7) rolled past A-O behind Spartan ace RHP Hunter Hart. Hart went the distance and struck out 16 Bomber hitters. Ryan Redpath led the Spartan attack with three hits and three RBI.

MONMOUTH

Kewanee Wethersfield 7, Aledo 1
Kewanee Wethersfield (26-7) rolled past the Green Dragons behind a one-hit masterpiece from Matt Jenkins (9-2).

4A REGIONAL SEMIFINALS

ST. VIATOR

Buffalo Grove 11, No. 10 Mundelein 9
The Bison had a surprise party for Mundelein (27-5) on Thursday in Arlington Heights outslugging the Mustangs to advance to the St. Viator Regional Championship Game on Saturday. Mundelein led 8-3 after four innings when the Bison bats exploded. BG scored four times in the fifth to claw within a run at 8-7 and then scored five more runs in the sixth to roll to the stunning victory.

Josh Guertler and Luke Potnick went deep for the Bison. Guertler was a one-man wrecking crew going 3-for-3 and driving home six runs for BG. Potnick added a triple and finished with three RBI. Bison LHP Jon Niemann allowed a run and two hits in his stellar three innings of relief to pick up the win.

NORMAL

No. 25 Moline 17, Normal Community 1
Moline (24-10) romped past the host Ironmen in five innings on Thursday behind Matt Brill. Brill had three hits, scored four runs and plated four more to lead the Maroons to Saturday’s 10 am regional championship game with No. 1 Normal West (32-3). Maroon starting and winning pitcher Dallas DeVrieze (8-2) fired a three-hitter at Normal Community who bows out at 19-13.

PBR Scouting Director Steve Nielson will be in Normal for the outstanding pitching matchup between Brill (9-0) and Normal West’s University of Illinois-bound RHP Matthew James (10-0).  

ARGO

Lyons Township 15, Kenwood 2
Lyons Township (23-10) scored nine times in the third inning to quickly finish off Kenwood in five innings on Thursday. Stewart Nelson, Max Larson, Tom Prescott and Sam Heilenbach all went deep for the Lions. Prescott was 2-for-2 with four RBI while Larsen went 3-for-3 with three RBI and Heilenbach drove home three as well. Senior LHP Alex Vannucci picked up the win on the mound for LT.   

JACOBS

Jacobs 8, Crystal Lake South 5
Jacobs (22-11) jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and hung on to defeat the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division co-champions from Crystal Lake South (22-7) on Thursday. Connor Conzelman led the Golden Eagles attack with two singles and two RBI. Grant Kale added a pair of singles and an RBI.

HINSDALE CENTRAL

No. 7 Downers Grove South 8, Plainfield East 4
Downers Grove South (29-6-1) rolled past the Bengals behind Mustang junior 2B Joe Becht. Becht singled, doubled and plated three runs to lead the DGS attack. University of Pacific-bound Dan Mayer fired three scoreless innings in relief of University of Iowa-bound RHP Zack Burdi. Burdi allowed four runs and four hits in four innings of work on the mound to pick up the win. Mayer had a productive day at the plate with two singles and two RBI. Senior C Javier Martinez chipped in with a double and a RBI.

BARTLETT

Hoffman Estates 5, Batavia 4
Hoffman Estates (12-18) stunned the Upstate 8 Conference River Valley champion Bulldogs on Thursday.

WHEATON NORTH

Wheaton North 9, Addison Trail 0
Wheaton North (25-8) blanked AT behind a two-hit shutout from Falcon LHP Doug Hayes. Hayes fanned seven Blazer hitters while walking three. Cody Gregory had a single with two RBI while Wheaton College-bound John Peltz added two hits and an RBI. Morehead State-bound Ryan Moritz and Mike Mannix chipped in with a single and an RBI each.

NAPERVILLE CENTRAL

Plainfield North 4, Naperville North 0
Plainfield North (16-14) blanked the Huskies behind senior RHP Zach Zyburt’s four-hit shutout. Zyburt struck out six. Tiger senior Zach Trusk went 3-for-3 with an RBI while senior Kurt Palandech chipped in with two hits and an RBI.   

GENEVA

St. Charles East 2, Glenbard East 1
St. Charles East (23-11) scored in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double from Brian Sobieski to slip past the Rams on Thursday. Sobieski doubled home the first Fighting saint run in the second and senior RHP Matt Starai (8-1) did the rest. Starai fired a three-hitter at the Rams with 10 punch-outs lowering his ERA to a sick 0.59.  

MCHENRY

Prairie Ridge 4, Grayslake North 1
Watch out for the Wolves. Prairie Ridge (24-11) defeated the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division champs from Grayslake North (20-9) behind a solid six innings of work from RHP Steve Ladd. Ladd allowed a run and five hits with six strikeouts to pick up the win. Wolves’ ace LHP Mike Reitcheck walked one and struck out three to nail down the save in the seventh.

Austin Covers had a double and plated two runs while Mike Hallstrom added two doubles and an RBI for PR. University of Missouri-bound Jordan Getzelman chipped in with a single and an RBI.

SCHAUMBURG

York 2, Willowbrook 1
York (16-19) senior RHP River Pitlock ripped a two-out walk-off double plating senior Josh Paparone, to lead the Dukes past the Warriors on Thursday. St. Charles Road was blocked for a few moments after the game, as joyous Duke Fans danced merrily onto the Du Page County thoroughfare. Pitlock improved to 5-4 on the season with a six-hitter with 10 punch-outs. Lou Alcaraz chipped in with a single and an RBI. Willowbrook closes out the season at 22-11.   

MOUNT CARMEL

Reavis 7, Oak Lawn 6
Reavis (20-15) rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to stun archrival Oak Lawn on Thursday at Ron Czarnecki Field in Burbank. Oak Lawn (15-13) scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to grab a 6-5 lead. Hernandez and O’Hara struck in the Ram seventh. Hernandez singled home the tying run and then scored the game-winner in walk-off style on a clutch RBI single by Joe O’ Hara. O’Hara’s heroics had Ram fans dancing out into 77th Street after the huge Ram victory.  

ST. RITA

No. 4 St. Rita 12, Kennedy 0
St. Rita (29-7) crushed Kennedy in five innings behind St. Joseph’s College-bound first baseman Marty Napleton who had two hits and two RBI.

NOTRE DAME

Elk Grove 16, Maine East 0
Elk Grove (23-10) destroyed Maine East in five innings behind the Name of the Year Man, Johnny Assimakopoulos, who was 3-for-3 who hammered a grand slam, tripled, singled and plated six Grenadier runs. Luc DiMaso singled doubled and drove home a pair of runs while Mickey Maize chipped in with a single and two RBI. RHP Mike Woods (7-4) picked up the win on the mound for EG.

JOLIET CENTRAL

Plainfield South 3, Bradley-Bourbonnais 2
Plainfield South (26-8) won a thriller in 12 innings as Coastal Carolina-bound C John McNulty singled home the game winner for the Cougars in the bottom of the 12th.

ROMEOVILLE

Neuqua Valley 4, Romeoville 0
Neuqua Valley (26-9) blanked the Spartans behind a brilliant two-hit shutout from RHP Cody Coll. Coll fanned 11 Spartan hitters and did not walk a batter. Matt Wollnik had a single and an RBI while Mike Riesner chipped in with two singles.

ROCKFORD GULIFORD

Rockford Boylan 5, Machesney Park Harlem 4
Rockford Boylan (19-9) hung on to defeat NIC-10 rival Harlem. Titan C Nick Nalewanski had a single and two RBI to lead the Boylan attack. Harrison North and Nick Rodenbeck each singled and plated a run for the Titans. LHP Danny Appino picked up the win on the mound while Titan LH closer Jake Sheley retired the Huskies in order in the seventh to nail down the save.  

LAKE ZURICH

Glenbrook North 8, Lake Zurich 1
Glenbrook North (24-11) rolled past the Bears behind another superb effort from Spartan ace RHP Jake DeRousse (8-1). DeRousse had 11 punch-outs in his route-going performance against the Bears. The lone Bear run was unearned. Red-Hot Grant Rushing continued to crush the baseball with two more hits including a three-run bomb that broke open the game. Drew Malter continued his hot hitting with a pair of hits and a pair of RBI.

DEERFIELD

No. 13 Glenbrook South 1, Highland Park 0
Senior RHP Sam Koloms did it all Thursday for the 13th-ranked Titans. Koloms had two hits and plated the only run of the game which made him the winning pitcher, after he totally shut-down the Giants with three scoreless innings of relief for GBS.

EVANSTON

Maine South 12, St. Patrick 2
Maine South (21-9) behind Hawk junior Marty Balow who had a pair of hits and plated four Hawk runs. Senior Zach Jones had two singles two runs scored and two RBI for the Hawks and senior LHP Brian Jones picked up the win on the mound to improve to 5-2 for MS.

VON STEUBEN

Niles West 10, Von Steuben 0
Niles West (18-7) blanked the hosts behind a two-hit shutout from RHP Max Delavega. Delavega struck out six and improved to 3-0 on the season. Senior Seth Rosenberg had two hits and plated his 32nd run of the season while Adam Olen added three hits and an RBI.

EDWARDSVILLE

Alton 3, Danville 2
Alton (26-9 slipped past the Vikings behind senior Nick Paulda and Ray Baily. Paulda singled home the game-winner in the bottom of the sixth and Baily (6-4) fired three scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win on the mound for the Redbirds.

OFALLON

Belleville East 5, Belleville West 3
After Belleville East (21-13) had tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh, senior Brandon Hoguet stepped up to the plate. Hoguet set off a massive victory celebration when he launched a bomb that left the premises at beautiful Blazier Field to give the Lancers a victory over archrival West.

CARMEL

Carmel 6, Wheeling 0
Carmel (25-9) rolled past Wheeling behind six shutout innings from junior Dalton Wright. Wright allowed five hits with six strikeouts for the Corsairs. Senior Tyler Murphy hammered a bomb and plated a pair for Carmel. Junior Duncan Amrein singled doubled and drove home a Corsair run while seniors Brent Milazzo and Matt Ryan chipped in with a hit and RBI. Milazzo had a double.

RICHARDS

Lincoln-Way East 10, Thornwood 0
Lincoln-Way East (17-15) crushed Thornwood in five innings on Thursday behind a three-hit shutout from Karl Henderson. Jack Dwyer mercifully put an end to the contest with a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth.

Vernon Hills (16-16) blanked Ridgewood behind junior LHP Tyler Feece who fired a five-hit shutout at the Rebels with 11 strikeouts and went deep and drove home both Cougar runs.

RIVERSIDE-BROOKFILELD

Montini 14, Westinghouse 0
Montini (21-8) blanked the Warriors in five innings behind a five-inning no-no from Eric Frontzak. Rhett Wojkovich was 3-for-3 for the Broncos and junior 3B Austin Kline had a single and a pair of RBI. Kline is hitting .369 with a team leading 5 homers and 37 RBI. Chris Bartosz  leads the Broncos with a .425 clip with 18 RBI.

Grayslake Central 4, Johnsburg 2

Gordon Tech 17, Sullivan 0
Gordon Tech (17-18) crushed Sullivan in five innings on Thursday behind a combined five-inning no-no from Ram RHP Julian Gonzales and Carmelo Reyes. Gonzales fired four no-hit innings with nine strikeouts while Reyes struck out the side in the fifth to end this Ram win with a flourish. Ty Tres had two singles scored two runs and drove home three to lead the Ram onslaught. Gonzales helped himself with a single and four RBI.

Waterloo (24-10) coasted past the Midgets behind a six-hitter from junior Austin Nunnery. Nunnery (3-4) fanned eight and the lone midget run was unearned. Bulldog junior 3B Reid Hoffman singled doubled and drove home two runs while senior SS Alex Wittenauer had two singles and an RBI.

Mahomet-Seymour’s Brad Hermann’s walk-off double in the bottom of the 14th scored Joe Kenney from first, to put an end to this instant classic. Hermann fired nine scoreless innings of relief allowing just two hits to pick up the win. Hermann struck out seven.

TROY-TRIAD

Troy-Triad 4, Alton Marquette 1
Troy-Triad (25-11) rolled past Marquette behind a five-hitter from senior Jakob Thomas. Thomas (5-2) fanned eight and the lone Marquette run was unearned. Senior Jared Crutcher singled doubled and plated a pair of runs to lead the Knight attack. Seniors Ty Berleth and Ty Carpenter chipped in with a single and an RBI each. 

LEMONT
