Dallas Summer Open: Quick Hits

Brandon Gowins
Texas Scouting Director

On August 2, the PBR Texas team hosted the Dallas Summer Open at Lake Dallas High School. The day started off by the players running a 60, then throwing from their defensive positions, followed by each player taking a round of batting practice. It was capped off by pitchers throwing bullpens. Today, we take a closer look at some of the standouts from the day.

FULL STAT SHEET

+ STAT LEADERBOARDS

Mason Bell RHP / 3B / Boswell, TX / 2025

The top arm on the day was the 6’2 Bell. The rising Jr. from Boswell showed a quality 3 pitch mix, and has a frame and arm to dream on. Bell topped out at 85 mph, sitting mostly 82-84.  He generates most of that velocity with his upper half, as he learns to get into his legs and gain strength, Bell could really see his velo jump. He showed a quality slider that had quality sweeping action to it. He also threw a changeup that he killed the spin on and had a lot of run on it.  Bell has a starters profile with a frame to hold the workload. With a big fall of getting stronger, Bell could come out in the Spring and really pop.

Morgan Garrett SS / RHP / Arlington Heights, TX / 2025

Garrett is a MIF/RHP from Arlington Heights HS, and he had a solid day all the way around.  The rising Jr. looked good on the infield, moving well laterally and showing an arm that will be able to stick on the left side of the infield long term.  At the plate, Garrett showed a good swing that he repeats well. He showed good barrel control and consistently made solid contact.  Garrett shows a lot of tools and has a good feel for the game. If he attacks the weight room and gets stronger, the rising Jr. could be in for a big season.

Mak Lerma OF / 3B / Boswell, TX / 2025

The top overall day for position players probably belongs to Lerma. The rising Jr. from Boswell showed off avg. to above average tools across the board for the entirety of the workout. He ran a quality 60 at 6.90 to start his day and then threw an event best 89 from the OF.  Ball had good carry and he was accurate with his throws as well. At the plate, the LHH had an event best exit velo of 93.5. It is a compact swing, and he does a good job of staying inside of the ball. He was at his best when he stayed in the big part of the field. Lerma had a good day overall and another Boswell player that is making a jump.

Jonathan Frey OF / 2B / Keller, TX / 2025

Frey had a good day showing some real upside with the bat.  The rising Jr. from Keller profiles best as a Corner OF who is a good athlete.  At the plate, Frey showed good bat speed, as his Blast numbers were really good across the board.  He had one of the better max exit velocities on the day, with 92.1 mph being his best one. He starts narrow with an open stance and really gathers and then lets it fly. If he can learn to stay back longer, and catch the ball out front, Frey could grow into some nice pull side power. Frey has a lot of physical traits, and as the swing continues to tighten up, Frey has a chance to do damage for Keller.

Coby McBride OF / Boswell, TX / 2025

McBride got his day going by running a blistering 6.66 60. The Switch Hitter from Boswell showed the high end speed that will allow him to stick in Center at the next level.  Mc Bride has a clean swing from the left side, staying flat through the zone. It is geared to spray line drives all over the field. The swing is a little more raw from the right side, but he has bat speed and showed the ability to turn the barrel. He is a little more pull happy from the right side, but he shows good barrel to ball skills. McBride showed a lot of bounce and athleticism on the day, and he profiles as a top of the order bat who causes havoc on the bases and plays a good CF.
