2019 Canadian Spring Training - Day 1

Day 1 is in the books at the 2019 Canadian Spring Training. Here are a number of guys that caught our eye throughout the day.

Carter Seabrooke LHP / OF / Crestwood , ON / 2019

Report: The top uncommitted 2019 in attendance, Seabrooke was up to 89 in his one inning of work, displaying a quick tempo delivery with arm speed and good life out the hand. He threw a curveball at 74 mph that dropped off the table with 1/7 shape. The actions all work, and Seabrooke looks noticeably stronger. Can’t see him staying uncommitted for long.

Alex Springer LHP / OF / NA, ON / 2021

Report: Springer, a 2021 looked very loose and projectable on the mound over his two scoreless innings of work. He’s long and lanky, working in the upper 70’s with his fastball, topping out at 80 mph. His curveball showed well, 11/5 shape and felt comfortable using it in just about any count. He was painting corners with his fastball as well and will be a good young arm to follow over the summer.

Tyrone Barbosa C / RHP / St.Mary's, ON / 2020

Report: Barbosa looked good on both sides of the ball today, making a big play in a big moment for the Tri City Giants 16U squad. With his team down three and the bases loaded, the 2020 catcher threw in behind the runner at second after a strikeout which ended the inning as they headed into their final at-bats. At the plate, he has a loud bat with lift in his swing, combined with present strength in his 6-foot-1, 190-pound frame.

Josiah Seales RHP / 3B / NA, ON / 2020

Report: Josiah Seales, a 2021 right-hander, worked three innings in relief for the Ontario Yankees striking out the first three Giants hitters he saw. He was missing bats and commanded the fastball, mixing in only a few breaking balls and seven of his nine outs came via strikeout. Seales fastball worked at 78-79 and was a little stiff on the mound, but his presence on the mound was felt throughout the entirety of his showing.

Nick Lostracco RHP / NA, ON / 2018

Report: Lostracco, a right-handed arm, started game one for the Nationals and went three innings allowing a run. From a high ¾ slot, Lostracco gets out front and will ride his fastball up to 83 mph, while he hovered around the 80 mph. He’ll flip in a slower breaking curveball with some downward gradual break. There’s a little cut to his heater and he showed the ability to throw the pitch to both sides of the plate. The 2019 arm is still uncommitted and we should get another look at him in the upcoming days.

Shane Elliott LHP / Huron Park , ON / 2019

Report: Uncommitted 2019 Shane Elliott of the Nationals came on in relief today and dealt, racking up outs against a strong TNXL club. A crafty left-hander, Elliott lands across his body and throws from a standard 3/4 slot with little length out back. He a strike-thrower and a guy who could come in and give opposing clubs a different look. His location of his breaking-ball with some 10/4 sweep allows him to maximize the pitch. Interesting arm who could be useful out of the pen at the next level. Throwing every day at the next level will allow Elliott to see future gains with his stuff.

Espen Lester OF / NA, ON / 2020

Report: A 2020 OF, Espen Lester put on a display at the plate today for the Ontario Nationals driving in big runs in key spots. First, a clutch base-hit with 2 outs to drive in the run which would win the ballgame, and later an insurance run to make it a 6-1 game. A left-handed hitter, Lester is short to the ball and stays through the hitting zone for a long time using the whole field. With his extended bat path, that allows him to better hit breaking stuff, even when out front. Lester is an interesting bat with some pop to the pull-side and should be a interesting watch the rest of the week.

Alex Vince LHP / NA, ON / 2020

Report: Smooth left-hander from the Toronto Mets with a projectable frame, Vince is loose and easy with fluid actions in the back and was 81-82 mph, topping out at 83 mph with his fastball. There is action and spin on his breaking ball as it worked in the low 70’s, and with his size, actions, and room to add strength, expect for the numbers to rise and Vince could be in line for a breakout 2019 campaign.

Campbell Lyons RHP / All Saints Catholic, ON / 2020

Report: Lyons got the start for the Toronto Mets and worked two efficient innings, working quick, utilizing his fastball that worked at 80-82 and threw two breaking balls with 11/5 shape that resulted in swings and misses. The arm works, it’s loose, and he pitches with rhythm and tempo. He can add strength to his 6-foot-4 frame and Lyons looked to be in mid-season form, throwing 19 pitches over two innings.

Owen Ellis OF / SS / TA Blakelock, ON / 2021

Report: Ellis, a toolsy 2021 outfielder laced a double to left-field that cashed in two, which could also be the turning point in his Pirates team comeback. The hands worked well to ball and showed what kind of pop Ellis has. Definite follow for college coaches.

Joshua Anderson SS / 2B / Ajax, ON / 2018

Report: Best player on the field for us as a staff on Day 1. Seems anything in the zone was finding Andersons barrel. It’s a quiet, balanced approach, and worked foul pole to foul pole with extra base hits to both gaps. Actions played at shortstop with soft hands and arm thst showed carry across the diamond. Anderson is a 2019 grad whose stock has risen with what he did Day one.
