2019 Canadian Spring Training - Day 2

Day 2 is in the books at the 2019 Canadian Spring Training. Here are a number of guys that caught our eye throughout the day.

Dylan Howard C / 3B / Montcalm , ON / 2020

Report: A physical catcher, Howard’s strength was evident in BP early on day 2 as he put on display. With a quiet and strong lower half, Howard has a controlled and steady base to anchor his swing. He is short to the baseball with a flat swing and tends to catch the ball out front allowing him to create lift. He’s been solid behind the plate this weekend, and today was no different as he showed the ability to receive with minimal movement and keep the ball in front when blocking. Howard is one of the main back catchers to watch this week and he should show well in scout day tomorrow.

Davis Germann OF / RHP / Cameron Heights, ON / 2021

Report: A young 2021, Germann is a 5-foot-7, 135-pound right-hander who pitched well over multiple innings against the Mississauga Tigers. The righty showed the ability to locate his fastball all over the plate, mixing in a slow curveball which he controlled as well. His mechanics are clean and repeatable and with physical development over the next few years, he could be a rotation arm at the next level.

Chase Schnurr OF / OF / St. David Catholic Secondary School, ON / 2021

Report: Schnurr, the leadoff man for the Tri-City Giants was swinging it and making loud contact. Quiet in the box, Schnurr gets his bat head in the zone and with bat control slaps the ball all over the field. Schnurr will need to stay through the ball longer in order to have success agaisnt breaking-stuff. He will be an interesting follow as he continues to develop.

Nathaniel Ochoa SS / OF / Assumption Catholic , ON / 2022

Report: Ochoa, a 6-foot-1,162-pound infielder competed against strong competition and showed well. It’s an athletic, lean frame with lots of strength to see added over the next few years. At shortstop, he displayed smooth actions with body control to the ball and looseness on throws to first. At the plate, there’s rhythm with free and easy movements allowing for him to generate bat speed. He was quick to contact and stayed on the ball with a controlled two-handed finish. It’s easy to envision Ochoa developing into an impactful player at the college level.

Blake Gillespie SS / OF / Medway, ON / 2021

Report: Gillespie, a 2022 Nationals infielder impressed defensively today. There’s athleticism with lightness on his feet, and his hands worked well through the ball. He was clean funnelling with good transfers and was able to get off throws quickly. The bat is a work-in-progress, but he has years to make adjustments and develop value on the offensive side. He will be an interesting watch going forward as he's just a freshman in high school.

Jack Mount OF / RHP / Gloucester , ON / 2020

Report: Mount, an uncommitted 2020 right-hander was easily one of the best pitchers on the day working his fastball around 85-86 and the Nationals had a difficult time catching up to it with a lot of swing and misses. Nats were threatening in the fourth with the bases loaded, two outs and Mount came in and immediately got the punch out. There was some effort in the delivery the actions were clean. While his curveball wasn’t on today and he didn’t need it much, he’ll be a prospect to follow for the next two years.

Patrick Mulligan SS / RHP / Gloucester, ON / 2020

Report: Mulligan, a 2020 shortstop looked solid on both sides of the ball today for the Fieldhouse Pirates U16 squad. He showed loose actions and range from short, making multiple plays to both his left and right that required a quick transfer and strong throw across the diamond. At the dish Mulligan came through with an RBI single to put the Pirates up 3-0, ripping it his to his pull side. He showed a level swing from the right side and good bat path.

Gavin McLean RHP / OF / Elmira D., ON / 2021

Report: The RHP from the 16U Nationals, McClean from the Class of 2022, showed well on the mound over his three innings, not allowing an earned run against a strong 16U Fieldhouse lineup. The 6-foot-2 righty was a little stiff on the mound and his arm works straight over the top. McLean located his fastball on both sides of the plate and his changeup was his best offspeed pitch, keeping hitters off balance in his first outing of 2019.

William Watson RHP / 3B / David Suzuki, ON / 2021

Report: Watson, one of the top arms in the Ontario’s Class of 2021 worked one inning for Fieldhouse today and looked loose and projectable, sitting around 83-85 with minimal effort. The right-hander showed lots of potential with his offspeed stuff, showing late bite to his slider that was around 75 mph. Watson will be back on the mound in a can’t miss game Wednesday against ABC Academy from Quebec.

Justin Carinci SS / 2B / Pickering, ON / 2020

Report: Carinci, an athletic and twitchy middle infielder continues to impress after the first two days. Lots of hard contact and another double today as he glides around the bases and was a 4.25 with a small turn. There is rhythm at the plate, it’s balanced through contact with whip in the barrel, hands are quick to contact with sneaky power. Smaller frame but has present strength, Carinci is a 2020 that schools need to be on.

Ayden Wood OF / LHP / Courtice Secondary School, ON / 2020

Report: Wood, a young 2020 LHP from the Ontario Yankees worked 2 plus innings tonight versus a strong Elite Squad out of Florida. The lefty showed a quick arm as he worked at 80-83 with his fastball and a curveball that was inconsistent, but garnered swings and misses at times. He gets the most out of his frame with a c `qontrolled and repeatable delivery, and he flies down the line with speed and feel as a left-handed hitter as well. Definitely take notice.

Griffin Almond RHP / C / Georgian Bay Community School, ON / 2020

Report: The 2021 right-hander has made vast improvements over the last year, an the 6-foot-6 frame catches the eye immediately. The arm works and fastball had some jump out the hand as he worked 80-84 mph. He would slow his arm and delivery down on off-speed but there is stuff to work with and time is on his side. Nice first outing of the year for Almond and the upside is something to dream on for the 2021.
