2019 Canadian Spring Training - Day 3

Day 3 is in the books at the 2019 Canadian Spring Training. Here are a number of guys that caught our eye throughout the day.

Justin Jang C / 3B / Abbey Park, ON / 2021

Report: 2021 Justin Jang of the Fieldhouse Pirates was one of the top catchers on the day, posting a showcase best 1.96 pop-time and 77 mph from behind the plate, tied for best. Jang has a line drive approach at the plate and drives balls up the middle, as shown by his hard-hit single in our Game of the Day against the Mississauga Tigers.

Cameron Gurney SS / 2B / Pauline Johnson, ON / 2021

Report: 2021 SS Cameron Gurney performed well in the morning showcase with the fourth best velocity on the infield and an 86 exit velocity. The stocky middle infielder from Tri City followed that up with a two hit game, including a two-run single to tie the game. He looked smooth and relaxed at short throughout the game with a clean transfer and following through his throws across the diamond.

Greg Van Boekel LHP / OF / N/A, ON / 2020

Report: Van Boekel, a 6-foot-1 lefty for the Nationals 18U squad looked sharp over his four innings of work, striking out 6 and working his fastball low in the zone. His curveball got stronger as the game went on and sat down four Giants hitters with the pitch. Van Boekel was loose on the mound, coming straight over the top and repeating his delivery.

Alex Springer LHP / OF / NA, ON / 2021

Report: Left-handed throwing Alex Springer came into the game out of the pen and pitched well, quieting down a strong opposing offence. He made big pitches in big spots and threw in a 10/4 curveball with sweeping action that recorded swings and misses. His strike-throwing ability allows him to make the most out of his stuff. Springer should add strength, and therefore velocity, and could become a very useful arm for a club at the next level.

Bryce Arnold SS / 2B / Blessed Trinity, ON / 2020

Report: Arnold put on a show today at Scout Day and in-game, doing it on all sides of the ball. He ran a 6.75 60 yard dash to start the day off, showing off his quickness and explosiveness. Later in the infield portion, Arnold was quick and up to 87 mph across the diamond. The bat plays against good velocity, it’s quick twitch with bat-to-ball ability. He touched 95 mph on the EV station as well. Arnold has been good all week, and Tuesday was no different.

Dmitri Wolterbeek C / OF / Goderich District Collegiate Institute, ON / 2021

Report: 2021 Dimitri Wolterbeek was an intriguing watch out of the Ontario Nationals organziation. The infielder was steady on the right-side of second-base, making an over the shoulder catch in game 1 while also making the routine plays. He chimed in with a RBI single to put the Nats on the board first against the Tri-City Giants as well. Wolterbeek showed actions on both sides that you like to see and has a lot more physical development yet to occur.

Ayden Wood OF / LHP / Courtice Secondary School, ON / 2020

Report: Wood had an all-around solid day on scout day and in the nightcap, showing off a solid toolset. He ran a sub-seven 60-yard dash to start his day, before moving over to the outfield and showing off arm strength. At the plate, Wood displays a smooth swing with a good finish allowing him to stay on baseball’s and use the whole field. He did just that on day three, giving the Yankees the first run of the game against the Ontario Nationals. Wood could be a contributor at the next level and provide stability all over the field.

Sam Mitcham C / OF / Sinclair, ON / 2020

Report: Our Day Three Player of the Day, 2020 Sam Mitcham, had a great day at the plate but might still be remembered more for his work behind the dish. In a tight ball-game, the tall, lanky catcher was busy defensively, throwing out a runner, blocking balls and aiding the pitching staff in limiting a loaded TNXL squad to only one run. He added two knocks in the game as well, showing a simple, level swing with quick hands through the zone. At 6-foot-1, 160-pounds, Mitcham’s all-around game should continue to improve as he fills out.
