2019 Canadian Spring Training - Day 4

Day 4 is in the books at the 2019 Canadian Spring Training. Here are a number of guys that caught our eye throughout the day.

Tanner Almond OF / LHP / Georgian Bay Community School, ON / 2021

Report: Almond, a 2021 outfielder was one of the bright spots as the Nationals had difficulties figuring out TNXL’s left-hander on the mound. He came through with two of the few hits they had, driving both singles up the middle. Almond was relaxed and balanced from the left-side, swinging early in counts which has helped him throughout the week offensively. While he didn’t get a ton of chances to show his work in the field, his throws had some carry on them and he left Scout Day with an 82 velocity from outfield. At 5-foot-10, 160 pounds, Almond will be a player to follow over the next few years as he grows and matures.

Brody Black OF / 2B / NA, ON / 2020

Report: Black, a 2020 outfielder has improved his body as there is present strength in his 5-foot-11, 170-pound frame. The swing has been polished as there is a more consistent swing path with a chance to turn into some power potential. From a defensive side, the arm plays with carry from the outfield, and Black threw out a runner at first base on a hard hit single to right field. Intriguing 2020 prospect who could make a big jump this 2019 season.

Andrew Savage C / NA, ON / 2020

Report: Savage put on a display behind the plate on Wednesday throwing out three runners in limited chances. Out of the crouch, Savage showed the ability to get up and throwing on pitches all over the strike zone, using his arm strength which has been up to 75 mph to gun down runners. Replacing his feet quickly, Savage recorded a 2.07 pop on one of the attempted steals and was up to 1.97 the day before. Savage has been a solid player for the Tri-City Giants in large part due to his defence, and we look forward to watching Savage over the course of the season.

Cedric Beaudry, 2020, ABC
Report: ABC Academie’s athletic 2020 uncommitted second baseman, Cedric Beaudry showed nice actions up the middle and was swinging it on Day Four as well, coming through with two base knocks and an RBI for ABC. He toe-taps into his load and does a good job of using his lower half and getting his hands out front. Defensively he was solid with a quick first step, making a few nice plays on his backhand in the hole up the middle and his stellar footwork helped finish off those plays. Beaudry is slightly undersized at 5-foot-9, 145-pounds but can play on both sides of the ball and even stole a base on the day as well.

Efrain Romero, 2019, ABC
Report: 2019 Efrain Romero of the ABC Academie was a key run producer for the club in their single game of the day. Romero drove the first run of the showing with a sac-fly to center, and he later followed up with a hard-hit base-hit up the middle. To round off his day, Romero singled in two runs to put the finishing touches on the game and complete a 3 RBI game. Romero is a big left-handed hitter but features more of a base-hit oriented swing. He will get out front slightly and slap the baseball at times instead of letting it eat. It’s an interesting frame with strength, and it's easy to envision him becoming a consistent power hitting bat with the current hit tool he posses.

Dominic Teoli, 2020, ABC
Report: Teoli a 5-foot-11 187-pound right-handed arm started off the game for ABC and went four innings of one-run baseball. Teoli sat 81-83 mph while throwing in a 74 mph changeup and a 70 mph slider. Teoli uses a tall and fall delivery, throws from a high ¾ arm slot and lands in-line. His mechanics are simple and clean, allowing him to repeat his delivery and therefore throw strikes. His secondary offerings were both inconsistent, but at times they both showed well. His change-up lacks fading action, but with similar arm-speed, and good location he froze hitters on multiple occasions. His slider has to be buried inside on left-handed bats in order to be effective as it lacks tight break, and when he did so he recorded multiple swings and misses. Teoli is an interesting 2020 arm to keep an eye on out of Quebec.

Joshua Jones. 2022, ABC
Report: Jones, a young 2022 outfielder knocked around a couple of base-hits in his one-game displaying his raw abilities. The two line-drives drove in a pair. He displayed some quickness and athletic ability, and as his body progresses is a name to watch going forward.

Jeremy Hernandez-Martel, 2020, ABC
Report: Hernandez-Martel, a 5-foot-8,150-pound 2020 grad put together a solid showing for the ABC Academie on day four. The uncommitted right-handed hitter has a loose and athletic swing where he is rotational towards the ball and displays pull-side power. In game action, he lined a base-hit through shortstop, taking a pitch down the middle and sticking to his strengths, getting the bat head out front and thinking pull. There is going to swing and miss with his style of hitting, but power will be a component of his game because of it. Hernandez-Martel is an interesting bat to keep an eye on as he heads into his junior season.

Jaycob Lachance, 2020, ABC
Report: Lachance is a very interesting 2020 RHP out ABC Academie as the 5-foot-11, 155-pound prospect worked two innings yesterday. His fastball worked in the 83-85 range, topping out at 86 mph with a sharp slider at 74 mph that has potential to be a strikeout pitch as he matures and adds strength. He threw his curveball as well in the low 70’s, with a loose and easy arm action from a clean ¾ slot. The actions and athleticism he displayed on the mound make it easy to project that there is more velo in the tank; Lachance is a nice 2020 arm that needs to be on the radar for college coaches.
