Division I Team Of The Week: Beavercreek

BEAVERCREEK - A long winning streak has come in dominating fashion and with it Beavercreek is the PBR Ohio Division I Team of the Week.

The Beavers, which extended the streak to 11 on Monday with a 5-2 victory over Fairborn, have now outscored the opposition 105-40 to stand at 14-1 on the season.

“We’ve been playing good defense,” explained head coach Brandon Long, whose team is 8-0 In the Greater Western Ohio Conference National East Division. “Making routine plays is important, along with not walking people.”

Junior right-hander Ethan Tedder (Video) and senior lefty Mitchell Sumner have been huge on the mound for the 10th-ranked Division I team in Ohio. Tedder, a 6-2 185-pounder ranked 63rd in the state in the 2020 class and the Tuesday conference starter, is 3-0 with a 0.90 ERA, fanning 27 in 23 innings, while Sumner stands 4-0 with a 0.72 ERA, striking out 37 in 29 frames. Both have a pair of shutouts.

“We knew we’d be good with a one-two punch pitching,” Long said. “But Charlie Schafer coming on as a pitcher and hitting the ball well has really helped.”

The sophomore, who is the 53rd-rated 2021 in Ohio and plays left field when not pitching, is 2-0 with a pair of saves, 24 Ks and a 0.49 ERA in 14.1 innings while also hitting .407 batting in the nine-hole.

Senior third baseman Grant Reeve, a UNOH recruit, tops the team in average at .462 while leadoff hitter Nolan Frisk, a junior center fielder, is batting .390 with 14 stolen bases. Tedder, who plays shortstop and outfield in addition to pitching, is hitting .349 with eight doubles and one triple while junior catcher Austin Schroeder has been another big contributor averaging .333.

“I really like the way these guys play to the end of the game,” Long noted. “We’ve been tied, we’ve been 0-0 in the seventh and been down in the seventh, but they battle to the end. We were down 7-0 to Lakota East and came back to win 11-10. A lot of teams I’ve coached would have hung it up.”

This past week the Beavers did not permit a run in the rain-shortened week, beating Wayne 15-0 and Miamisburg 1-0.

“In high school baseball you’ve got to throw strikes,” Long explained. “We need to keep doing that and playing good defense. The little things are important, not giving away at-bats and hitting fastballs in fastball counts.”

Depth is another factor according to the 11th-year head coach.

“We carry 18 guys and are two to three deep at each position,” Long said. “We can plug and play, pitch hit and not lose anything. We have a lot of versatility.”

But Long admits not expecting the start his team has had this season.

“We’ve had some darn good years, but I don’t think we’ve ever been sitting 13-1 (now 14-1),” Long said. “I told the pitching coach coming in this year if we were .500, I’d be happy. I didn’t realize we’d be where we are at now. You’ve just got to enjoy it.”
