Shelbyville, IN – East Central traveled on Tuesday to take on sectional opponent Shelbyville. East Central received solid pitching performances from two young players to improve to 9-3 on the year with a 5-2 victory. Freshman Ben Vogelsang got the start going five innings and sophomore Ethan Kramer came on for the last two innings to close out the game.

East Central’s offense got on the board early, putting up a run in each of the first two innings. In the first Senior Peyton Stonefield reached on a one out error to start the offense. One batter later Senior Austin Holloway came through with a two out RBI double to left center. In the second inning Junior Nick DeZarn led off the inning with a double to left and Junior Erik Gruen followed with a RBI single putting East Central up 2-0.

The lefty, Vogelsang, cruised through the first two innings, but in the third Shelbyville answered back with a pair of runs. After the first two batters of the inning struck out, JD Cox reached on an error bringing up Junior Chase McColley. McColley got a pitch down in the zone and drove it over the left field wall for a game tying two run shot, however that would be all Vogelsong would allow. In his five innings he allowed three hits, two walks, and struck out five.

In the fifth East Central broke up the tie game with two runs. Senior Nate Werner got a leadoff walk to start things off.  He then advanced to third on two wild pitches. Senior AJ Schomber drove him in with a RBI single to break the tie. After a pitching change, Stonefield singled allowing Schomber to advance to third. Senior Lucas Gramman drove in Schomber with a sac fly to make the score 4-2.

East Central would add another run in the top of the seventh with a sac fly from Holloway giving East Central a 5-2 advantage.

Kramer threw the final two innings allowing just one hit (picking him off at first after he reached) and striking out three. The sophomore lefty sat 78-80 touching 81 a couple times with two quality off speed pitches.
