Eastern Wisconsin Open: Preview

By Andy Sroka

On Monday, Aug. 17, the PBR Wisconsin team will host its final event on the summer slate: the fourth annual Eastern Wisconsin Open, coming to you from Wildwood Baseball Park in Sheboygan. Every year, the state’s staff reconvenes in Sheboygan where we get a closer look at prospects in the state that we don’t often get to see, and there are plenty of new faces we’re set to see for the first time.

EVENT HISTORY

Last year’s showcase provided us with a strong look at one of the state’s best arms within its 2021 class: RHP Logan Schulfer (Stevens Point Area; Wisconsin-Milwaukee commit). The athletic, strong righty has huge arm strength with a power changeup, and he reasserted himself as one of the top arms in the Midwest at this very showcase a year ago.

But what this event specializes in is revealing to us new names to add to our prospect lists, like RHP/3B Devin Mrozek (Stevens Point Area, 2023), RHP Thomas Hunt (Almond-Bancroft, 2021), and 3B Blake Hall (Random Lake, 2020; Milwaukee School of Engineering). Each of these three made strong first impression at 2019’s Eastern Wisconsin Open and it had lasting effects. We’re eager to see which prospects will earn places on our radar this Monday.

ROSTER

There will be, however, many familiar names headed our way on Monday, including a former Team Wisconsin representative at the 2019 PBR Future Games: RHP Tyler Hug (Waukesha West), who remains of high-interest as an uncommitted athlete. Hug’s a track and field star at his high school, and he applies that athleticism on the mound, where he was up to 89 mph back in February. He has a couple power offspeed pitches, too, in his curveball and changeup. We’re looking forward to our latest look at one of the top uncommitted prospects in the state.

Tyler Hug (2/16/20)

From the state’s Class of 2022, RHP Benjamin Lee (Amherst) has stood out several times in 2020, beginning at March’s Fox Cities I.D. that led to strong performances in PBR-hosted tournaments at the Badger State Battle and at our PBR at The Rock Championships. Lee is a 6-foot-6, 195-pound right-hander with a heavy fastball, up to 85 mph, with improving offspeed. He’s a loose, clean-armed follow that’s done well to sharpen his arsenal since the winter.

Benjamin Lee (3/8/20)

RHP Gavin Rusch (Bay Port, 2021) is another sizable, projectable righty follow, listed at 6-foot-5, 190 pounds. While he’s still honing his huge size and lanky limbs, Rusch offers some serious upside. He topped 88 mph in the winter with a sharp breaking ball, and is working on translating it in-game. Still, the obvious potential here should have him as a coveted incoming senior in the state’s class. His teammate, both on the travel circuit and at high school, is 2B/SS Matthew Perry (Bay Port, 2021), another name to know ahead of time. Perry is a competitive middle infielder with tools, and even offers a little upside from the mound. He was invited to our Top Prospect - Milwaukee event back in July where he showed well, as a 7.07 runner who also topped 84 mph off the mound, paired with a compact right-handed swing, with some strength involved. He’s an all-around prospect who could help a program at the next level in a multitude of ways.
