Eastern Wisconsin Open: Preview

On Monday, August 20, PBR returns to Wildwood Baseball Park in Sheboygan, Wis., to host the Eastern Wisconsin Open, open to all high school athletes. There, the near 40 prospects attending the showcase will participate in a pro-style workout in front of our staff.

In the past, this event has identified a handful of next-level talent, like the Minnesota-bound 2018 grad SS Noah Berghammer (Janesville Craig) and 2019 RHP Jason Jennerjohn (Hortonville; Eastern Illinois commit). It’s a wonder which prospects will reveal their skillset in Sheboygan on Monday.

We’re looking forward to getting another look at Trett Joles (Boyceville), an incoming sophomore catcher who had one of the best days out of the crouch at the Western Wisconsin Open over a month ago now. The switch hitter demonstrated some bat strength too, especially for his age.

Another 2021 prospect who put himself on our radar a year ago was Whitefish Bay’s INF Brady Marget. It’ll be a year, nearly to the day, that we had the chance to see Marget in person, at last year’s Eastern Open. There, the 6-foot-2, highly projectable infielder looked athletic for his spindly, lanky frame. It’ll be interesting to see what this year has been like for his development as he further grows into his build.

On the 2019 side, two prospects ranked within their state’s class will join us: OF Jake Karll (Madison West; uncommitted) and SS Brent Widder (Sheboygan North; Evansville). You’ll notice that of the two, Karll is the uncommitted one – though, it’ll be interesting how much longer that’s the case. The Madison West outfielder made his debut on Wisconsin’s 2019 top-100 board last month for his simple swing and present bat speed that complements his gap-to-gap approach.

As for Widder, we haven’t seen him since last year’s Future Games, but committed to Evansville over that time. He’s a gamer with solid tools across the board.

Jake Karll (3.11.18)
