Fall Ball Notes-Lancers at Manogue

Buddy Gouldsmith
Nevada Scouting Director

The Bishop Manogue Miners hosted the McQueen Lancers in a fall scrimmage Tuesday afternoon.  The Miners in their home starchy white pants and green tops with yellow numbers were easily spotted.  The Lancers donned the visiting grey pants with blue tops.  A lot of limited looks as both programs repositioned players frequently. Nevertheless, several players showed well.

UNLV commit, Joshua Rolling (2019), took the mound for the Miners in an inning of work.  The young right-hander faced the minimum three batters, striking out the final two.  Rolling displayed a FB 82-83 with area control.  He frequently used his curveball 70-72.  He commanded his curveball well using it both early for a strike and late in the count as a chase pitch.  As impressive as he was on the mound, he equaled the task at shortstop following is outing on the mound.  His actions were smooth and easy, displaying range on balls right and left as well as slow rollers.  At the plate, he stayed on the ball well, singling to right centerfield.  Miner centerfielder, Paul Vossen (2019), continues to dominate the offense. His speed is consistently on display as he led off the game with a single up the middle and promptly stole second and third base.  Later in the contest, he successfully sacrifice bunted, posting a 3.6 time to first base.  Defensively, Vossen ranged to the right centerfield gap for a soft fly ball, spun and threw out the runner attempting to score from third base.  A limited look at catcher Anthony Lynch (2020) for the Miners revealed a durable body catcher with enough arm strength to stay at the position.  With present strength, he possesses potential power and PBR Nevada will look forward to a longer look at his skill set.

The Lancers started Aiden Vestbie (2020) on the mound.  Vestbie showed a FB 82-84 and mid 70s off speed pitches.  He has the feel to be a 3 pitch mix type guy but on this day struggled to establish his fastball which extended his outing.  Vestbie’s athleticism is easily detected and will undoubtedly be a force for the Lancers both on the mound and in the field.  Vestbie was followed by a host of youthful arms on the mound, experiencing intermittent success. Lancer outfielder, Zach Foster (2020) continued to play well.  He made consistent hard contact and posted a 4.28 run time to first base on a groundball to the left side of the infield, his swing holding him in the box a little.  The projectable Foster threw well from right field with solid carry on a ball to home for a play at the plate.  Left-handed pitcher, first baseman Kaiden Regan, (2021), has struck the ball well on multiple occasions this fall. He too, may pose a threat for the Lancer lineup.
