Future Games Q&A: Justin Still

Brett Thorney
State Scouting Director

Today, we caught up with 2021 LHP Justin Still from Perry HS. He answered some questions for us about his experience participating as a member of Team Arizona at the 2019 Future Games in Emerson, GA. Still competed in the event as a pitcher and first basemen.

The Future Games is the most premier summer scouting event for uncommitted prospects. Last year, more than 320 college coaches from all over the country were in attendance. The Prep Baseball Report services are subscribed by more than 800 colleges and pro scouts.

Take a look at our Q & A with Justin Still below:

Scouting Report

The 6-foot-1 175 pound lefty finished the game with 83-86 mph heaters, but scattershot command.  It’s a good arm, with longer arm action and some effort to the delivery.  Didn’t have much feel for the secondary pitches in game action, but showed a good 69 mph CH at times.  Also pounded a triple to the RCF gap in his last at bat.

1/27/19 Uncommitted. 6’ 170 pounds, with current strength in frame. Has great intent at the plate and on the mound. While it may have been pull happy, the raw power is impressive for his age. Uses lower half very well to create leverage and bat speed at 90 mph. Toe tap with good rhythm in his hands working behind the baseball early to create a large margin for error. Lots of effort in the delivery, which may limit him long term to the bullpen but effort also means deception. His over the top arm angle on the mound creates good downhill plane with a fastball up to 86 MPH. His arm angle helps with depth on his breaking ball at 63 MPH. As he locates his fastball better, Still could become a legitimate two-way prospect.

PBR: How did it feel to be selected to compete in the PBR Future Games?

Still: It felt good. To know that I was being recognized as one of the top uncommitted players at the time.

PBR: Was your decision to attend hard?

Still: My family did worry about the money side of it for a little but decided that the investment was good.

PBR: What part of your game do you think was the biggest factor in getting you an invite?

Still: Probably my arm, I was throwing at a pretty good speed for a sophomore LHP.

PBR: Have you participated in any other PBR events? Do you think they helped?

Still: Yes one other, I think it did help because the PBR guys got to see my game up close at an event which hopefully confirmed that I was good enough for the team.

PBR: What was the atmosphere of the Future Games like? Were you impressed?

Still: It was intense, everyone was trying to do their absolute best in front of all of the scouts that were attending. I was very impressed.

PBR: What was the exposure like? Was it nerve-racking?

Still: It was very nerve racking, the stands were packed with college scouts all watching each kid as they participated in the individual stuff and also when you played in the games.

PBR: What was it like to compete against the best players from other states in the showcase and games?

Still: It was definitely a different level. That was one of the few times I faced 90+ consistently as a hitter and saw good off-speed from multiple pitchers.

PBR: What was the best part about playing on Team Arizona?

Still: The team was really fun to be around, we all had fun and competed our hardest.

PBR: How was your recruiting process after you attended the event?

Still: It got better, I had a couple of schools reach out to me as a pitcher and as a two way. The amount of exposure I got from the games was unreal.

PBR: Would you recommend future players to attend the PBR Future Games? Any advice for them?

Still: Yes, if they want to get seen by an absurd amount of scouts and showcase their skills to them they should attend for sure. My advice would be to play like there is nobody in the stands, just play your game.
