GBG Arizona Scout Day: Pitching Analysis

Jordon Banfield
Arizona Scouting Director

The GBG Arizona PBR Scout Day took place on Sunday, January 7th at Liberty HS in Peoria. The event featured prospects from the 2019-2022 classes and gave all players in the organization an opportunity to be evaluated by PBR and considered for future invite-only events. Today, we wrap up our positional analysis with the pitchers. Complete video, data, pictures and scouting reports have been posted to players' individual profiles. As always contact [email protected] or direct message @PBRArizona on Twitter with any questions and/or information.

After being named the top infield prospect at the event, Trevor Long also sits #1 on this list with his 85 mph fastball and athletic delivery. The next group of prospects are all very similar, sitting in the upper-70's and lower-80's. Cayden Collins and Kaden Schiefelbein offer the most projection of the group and therefore claim the second and third spots on the list. Check out or full list below.

TOP Pitching PROSPECTS

Trevor Long SS / RHP / Chaparral , AZ / 2020

Lean 6-foot-1, 165-pound frame with all around fast-twitch ability. Long was a standout performer in nearly every area and cemented himself as a guy that will be highly ranked when 2020 rankings are updated in February. A legitimate two-way prospect, he worked 84-85 with his mostly straight fastball, using a compact, low effort delivery with a high ¾ arm slot and the type of arm speed that indicates more velo is on the way. He also mixed in a sharp 71-72 mph curveball with tight rotation and late 11-5 break as well as a developing mid 70’s slider that backed up at times. His 75-77 mph changeup is already a weapon as he maintains arm speed and gets some late tumbling action on the pitch. Offensively, Long shows has a very loose swing, generating easy pop you wouldn’t expect from a 165-pound 2020 grad. He has an advanced rhythm, uses his lower half well and turned in an impressive 91 mph exit velo. Defensively there are some questions where he profiles best, possibly 3B or in the outfield, but he’s an athletic mover and threw 85 mph from SS. Also ran solid 6.96 60-yard dash.

Cayden Collins RHP / SS / Joy Christian, AZ / 2021

Projectable, high-waisted 6-foot-1, 165-pound frame with broad shoulders. Will certainly be one to follow moving forward. Two-way prospect is currently more advanced as a RHP where he ran his fastball up to 79 with very little effort. Uses slight across body delivery and low ¾ arm slot to produce good angles on all of his pitches. Also mixed in 67-68 mph curveball with short, 11-5 break and 69-70 mph changeup with fading action despite inconsistent arm speed. Collins also shows soft hands on the infield and is an effortless mover, throwing 79 mph across the diamond from a lower arm slot. He consistently found the barrel with his flat bat path and produced 81 mph exit velocity that will jump significantly with increased physical strength. 7.38 60-yard dash.

Kaden Schiefelbein 3B / RHP / Liberty, AZ / 2021

Currently a long ways off physically, but shows feel and a clean arm action on the mound to go along with some hitting ability. His present 5-foot-11, 130-pound frame will certainly undergo significant change in the coming years, and significant projection remains. Ceiling appears to be higher on the mound where he threw his fastball downhill through the bottom of the strike zone at 75-77 mph. Almost 3-piece arm action, but maintains fluidity and gets on top of the baseball quickly on the back side. Flashed short tight breaking ball in the upper 60’s that could become put away pitch as it becomes more consistent in terms of rotation and shape. 70-71 mph changeup was in the strike zone and flashed fading action. Offensively, hits from balanced setup, creating a wide base with his stride. Slight uphill path to high finish; some explosiveness in lower half. 77 mph exit velocity. Does a solid job playing underneath and through the baseball on the infield. Third base actions. Higher arm slot makes it difficult to throw on the run; 76 mph infield velo. Solid 7.29 60-yard dash for present body type.

Trevor Adams OF / 1B / Red Mountain, AZ / 2022

5-foot-10, 145-pound frame. Shows impressive combination of polish and athleticism for a current eighth grader. With extremely advanced rhythm in the box, Adams consistently made hard line drive contact to all fields in his round of BP. Using a leg-lift trigger, short hand load and explosive lower half, Adams is one to watch offensively. An athletic mover in the outfield, he posted an 81 mph outfield velocity to go along with his 7.2 60-yard dash. To cap things off Adams ran his fastball up to 77 mph and showed feel for three pitches with one of the more advanced deliveries we saw on the day. 65-67 mph curveball was consistently around the zone with early 11-5 break and 66-68 mph changeup will continue to improve as he throws it with fastball arm speed.

Michael Riley C / 3B / Pinnacle, AZ / 2021

6-foot-1, 205-pound frame. Two-way prospect showed best on the mound where he ran his mostly straight fastball up to 80 mph, sitting 76-77. Tilts shoulders to create some downhill plane and shows short, clean arm action. 65 mph breaking ball showed consistent rotation and varied between 10-4 and 11-5 shape. Also commanded straight changeup in zone with 70-72 mph velo. Offensively does a good job creating separation and uncoiling body in efficient fashion, producing solid 88 mph exit velo for freshman prospect. Shows solid infield actions, closing himself off to throw 77 mph across the diamond. Also worked out at catcher where his arm work well with 74 mph velocity and 2.16 best pop time. Present athleticism makes his ceiling higher on the mound.

Levi Huerta RHP / SS / Cactus, AZ / 2020

6-foot-2, 194-pound frame is well-proportioned and ideal for a pitcher. Worked 77-79 with his fastball, showing a low effort delivery and ¾ arm slot. Arm speed will be key for future velocity increases. Also threw 61-63 mph curveball with varying shape that tended to pop up out of the hand. 69-72 mph changeup was thrown with fastball arm speed and occasional sinking action.

Aaron Limon SS / RHP / Liberty, AZ / 2021

Possesses plenty of present strength in 5-foot-10, 165-pound frame. Limon put his arm strength on display with an 80-81 mph fastball with a high-tempo delivery and short arm action. 69-72 mph curveball has downward break, almost backing up on him at times. Also threw 73-76 mph changeup with good arm speed that flashed sinking action. Has some twitch in his body and also turned in an 85 mph exit velo and 6.94 60-yard dash. Really tries to create a deep barrel turn and produces an uphill path with a narrow base. Could be on the barrel more consistently by creating a wider base and flattening his path. 77 mph infield velocity with short arm action. Posted impressive numbers across the board for an incoming freshman.

Alex Hernandez C / RHP / Hamilton, AZ / 2021

5-foot-11, 160-pound frame. Hernandez took one of the better rounds of BP at the event, showing impressive raw power for a freshman prospect. Loads his hands very deep, creating a near arm bar, before transferring weight out over his front side in swing. The ball flies off his bat, big power potential. Showed solid arm strength behind the plate with a catcher velo of 72 mph and best pop of 2.18. Arm strength is there to be a solid thrower, can work to clean up footwork and transfer. Also pitched; running his fastball up to 77 mph with very little effort and a clean arm action. Mixed in 65-67 mph breaking ball with 10-4 shape.

Daniel Rodriguez OF / RHP / Marcos De Niza, AZ / 2021

5-foot-8, 150-pound frame. Skilled young player. Took some of the better BP at the event with a simple swing, using a very short stride and flat bath to square up the baseball. 75 mph exit velocity. Solid outfield actions; made accurate throws with clean arm action at 77 mph. Also pitched, sitting 77-79 mph with his fastball, topping at 80 with the same clean arm action he showed in outfield drills. Developing curveball tended to pop up out of his hand at 57-59. Also threw 62-64 mph changeup that flashed some late tumble.

Trevor Toland LHP / 1B / Liberty, AZ / 2021

Thin 5-foot-11, 140-pound frame with high waist. Two-way prospect showed and projects best on the mound where he worked 75-76 with his fastball. Some slight funk in the back side of his arm action, but did a solid job repeating and filling up the zone, using a high front side. Early Pronator. 62-63 mph curveball showed downward break and backed up at times. Tended to bury 69-70 mph changeup. Offensively, hits from wide base, with short hand load and slight uphill path. Rarely gets extension. 76 mph exit velocity. Threw 74 mph from first base with long arm action.
