GHSA Playoffs: Rockmart's huge rally in the 7th over Callaway has them Macon bound

Rockmart, GA – Rockmart and Callaway battled in an intense and competitive 2A semifinals series this week and the Yellowjackets were the ones to come out on top thanks in part to the pitching of ace Ty Floyd in game two and an enormous seventh-inning rally to come back and win game three. They’ll meet Jeff Davis on Monday at Luther Williams Field in Macon to determine the 2A champion.

GAME ONE

A gutsy Callaway performance pushed them to a come-from-behind victory, spurred by the middle of their lineup. Wes Marchman, Trent Shepard, and Braylin Mitchell looked dangerous each and every time they stepped in the batter’s box. Their work finally paid off in the fifth frame and Callaway never looked back.

Rockmart got a strong pitching performance from 3B/RHP Braynden Cole, who held Callaway scoreless his first two times through the line-up, but the Cavaliers broke through in the fifth and sixth and clung to that lead to secure a 5-4 game one win.

GAME TWO

Simply put, it was all Ty Floyd in this one. The junior Louisiana State commit and the No. 6-ranked prospect on Georgia’s 2020 board struck out the first 13 batters he faced and tallied a whopping 18 punch-outs to shutout Callaway. Rockmart’s offense chipped away and scored four runs in the ballgame, which granted Floyd more than enough breathing room. He wound up taking a perfect game to the seventh but settled for a no-hitter instead.

This was one of the more impressive outings I have witnessed this spring, and can only be described as pure dominance. Floyd didn’t allow the Cavaliers to get a runner on base until a walk in the seventh, but he quickly snuffed that out to secure the no-hit bid.

GAME THREE

The winner-take-all game three between these two squads did not disappoint. Callaway jumped out to an early lead behind those same bats. Drake Wade, Marcham, Shepard, and Mitchell all had big days at the plate for the Cavs and it carried Callaway to a 5-2 lead in with three outs to go in the ballgame. Rockmart is relentless, though, and they exploded for five runs in the top of the seventh to leap into the lead, 7-5. C.J. Culver’s bases-loaded triple to right was the highlight, as it propelled the Yellowjackets back into the lead for the first time since the second inning.

Floyd actually resurfaced in this one and took the mound in the bottom of the inning to seal the deal, after just having no-hit the Cavaliers the day before. He struck out two of the three he faced to hand Rockmart the impressive comeback win with their season on the line.

Jeff Davis is up next for the Yellowjackets in Macon for the 2A title.
