Game Report: Beech @ Rossview

Zaki Anderson OF / Beech, TN / 2019

OF showed above average run speed underway, running a 4.44 and 4.50 from the right side.  Short, athletic frame w/ some projection.  Offensively, hits from a straight on, slightly crouched stance w/ bat waggle into stride and load.  Hands come down and then up in the load.  Pull oriented approach.  Wants to hit gaps and use his above average speed to leg out doubles.  Defensively, covers ground in CF w/ arm strength w/ carry to target.

Haven Mangrum OF / 2B / Beech , TN / 2019

OF showed intriguing athletic skillset.  Medium, lean frame w/ long limbs, little present strength.  Offensively, hits w/ an open, slightly crouched stance w/ some hand rhythm into proper stride and load.  Line drive approach w/ ability to hit to all fields.  Wants to hit gaps and use his above average speed to leg out extra base hits.  Was not tested in the OF, showed average arm strength in I/O pregame. 

Josh Maskill C / 3B / Beech, TN / 2019

C showed more athletic body than when we saw him in the fall.  Medium, athletic frame w/ physical lower half.  Offensively, hits w/ an open stance w/ slight crouch and bat resting on back shoulder into stride to square (occasional toe tap) w/ proper load.  Generates bat speed through the zone w/ natural loft.  Timing slightly off on this day, was letting the ball get too deep.  Gap power type w/ projectable pull power.  Developing behind the plate.  Can present a target and hold it to help his pitchers.  Tools to frame w/ solid hands.

Drew Robertson OF / LHP / Beech, TN / 2019

OF showed pesky approach w/ above average speed, running a 4.41 down the line from the left side.  Offensively, hits w/ an open, slightly crouched stance into short stride to slightly open w/ short load.  Generates bat speed through the zone w/ knack for contact.  Crowds the plate, shortens w/ 2 strikes, hard to put away.  Projectable pull power.  Covers ground in RF w/ arm strength w/ carry to target.  Tracks the ball well w/ solid first step. 

Nelson Smith SS / 2B / Beech, TN / 2018

Uncommitted MIF showed athleticism and barrel feel, collecting 2 hits as he recently returned from playing basketball.  Medium, athletic frame w/ lean strength, some physical projection.  Offensively, hits from a slightly open, slightly crouched stance w/ toe tap to slightly open w/ short hand load.  Generates bat speed through the zone w/ natural loft.  All fields approach w/ projectable gap power.  Projects to hit at the next level.  Defensively, shows soft hands w/ reliable glove, arm strength w/ carry to target.  3-sport athlete will make a jump when focuses on baseball.

Blake Brown RHP / Beech, TN / 2021

FB (74-79, T80), CB (63-67)

Young righty touched 80 w/ projectable frame, quick arm.  Medium, long and lanky athletic frame w/ little present strength, projectable.  Pitches from a full wind-up w/ drive foot pre-set on the rubber and H ¾ release.  Repeats w/ upright finish, downhill plane.  FB shows arm-side run.  Flashes ability to spin, mixing in big downer CB w/ proper shape.  Thrower developing feel for the strike zone.  Saw velocity drop off in 2^nd inning (77-80 in first, 74-76 in second).  4 swing and misses on 12 swings.

Seth Marlin RHP / 2B / Beech, TN / 2018

FB (79-82, T83), CB (70-73), CH (77-78)

Uncommitted RHP flashed above average CB.  Medium, athletic, projectable frame w/ some present strength.  Pitches from a full wind-up w/ H ¾ release.  FB showed short arm-side run.  Mixed in medium downer CB that flashed late bite.  Generated 1 swing on 13 CB’s and was a swing and miss.  Firm CH, spiked all 3 he threw.  Around the zone, projects to command.  2 swing and misses on 21 swings.

Zach McWilliams RHP / 3B / Beech, TN / 2021

FB (83-85), CB (73-75)

RHP w/ exceptional bloodlines stood out for his mix of present arm strength, pitchability.  Medium, athletic, projectable frame w/ present lower half strength.  Pitches from a full wind-up w/ H ¾ release.  Repeats w/ loose, quick arm.  FB shows arm-side run.  Medium downer CB w/ proper shape/rotation.  Feel for FB command, 13 of 19 for strikes.  Projects to command.  3 swing and misses on 9 swings (all FB’s), needed just 22 pitches to work two 1-2-3 innings.

Gino Avros 3B / 2B / Rossview, TN / 2018

Uncommitted IF is just a baseball player.  Short, stocky frame w/ physical lower half.  Offensively, hits w/ a straight on, very slightly crouched stance w/ hand rhythm into leg kick and short hand load.  Still head w/ knack for contact, 0 swing and miss on 9 swings.  All fields approach w/ gap power.  Lot of line drives.  Average runner.  Defensively, reliable glove at 3B w/ arm strength w/ carry to target.  Maximizes his tools.    

Sebastian Dean OF / RHP / Rossview, TN / 2018

Uncommitted OF shows intriguing frame.  Medium, athletic frame w/ projection.  Offensively, hits w/ an open, upright stance into a leg kick w/ short hand load.  Generates bat speed through the zone w/ natural loft.  Patient approach, drew 3 walks and only swung the bat 4 times, did not swing and miss.  Want to see swing it again once the season rolls around.  Defensively, moves well in the OF w/ arm strength w/ carry to target.    

Christian Scott OF / Rossview, TN / 2018

The top ranked uncommitted prospect in the state, Scott continued to show his exceptional all-around game w/ a 3-4 day, including a 2-run HR to RF.  Medium, athletic frame w/ physical projection.  Offensively, hits w/ a slightly open, slightly crouched stance w/ leg kick and load.  Quiet head w/ short to the ball swing.  Generates bat speed through the zone w/ natural loft.  Has a presence in the box.  Pull oriented approach w/ pull power.  Above average runner ran a 4.31 down the line.  Defensively, covers ground in CF w/ arm strength w/ carry to target.  Contributor as a freshman wherever he ends up.

Kaleb Vaughn SS / RHP / Rossview, TN / 2020

SS jumped out in I/O and added a double over the left fielder’s head in game as 1 of his 2 hits.  Medium, athletic profile w/ projection, some present strength.  Offensively, hits in a slightly open, upright stance w/ short bat waggle into leg kick and short load.  Repeats simple swing.  Generates bat speed through the zone w/ natural loft.  Doubles power w/ projectable pull power.  Projects to hit for average.  Defensively, showed above average arm strength w/ solid hands and feet.  Very intriguing 2020 to keep an eye on into the spring.

Gage Bradley RHP / OF / Rossview , TN / 2020

FB (85-91), CB (73-76), CH (78-81)

Vanderbilt commit flashed 3 above average to plus pitches.  Prototypical pitcher frame, uber projectable w/ long limbs, some lower half strength.  Pitches from a full wind-up w/ H ¾ release.  Angle/plane.  Breaks hands early.  Lightning quick arm.  FB shows short arm-side run, explodes out of his hand.  Medium downer CB flashes above average depth, late bite.  Straight CH w/ arm-speed.  Learning to control his premium stuff, backed off to 85-87 in the 2^nd inning for more control.  6 swing and misses on 25 swings, including 3 of 5 on his off-speed stuff.

Elijah Pleasants RHP / OF / Rossview , TN / 2018

FB (85-89, T90), CB (68-72), CH (77)

Tennessee commit showed off his quick arm w/ above average athleticism.  Long limbed, prototypical pitcher frame w/ tons of projection, some present strength.  Pitches from a full wind-up w/ H ¾ release.  Quick arm w/ downhill plane.  FB shows short arm-side run, jumps out of hand.  Medium downer CB flashed late bite, above average depth.  Straight CH w/ arm-speed.  Around the zone, settled in nicely and pitched w/ command of 3 in his 2^nd innings.  19 of 25 pitches for strikes, projects to command.  1 swing and miss on 15 swings.

Bracken Rice RHP / 1B / Rossview, TN / 2020

FB (76-80, T81), CB (64), CH (72)

Border Battle participant did not need to use his above average secondary stuff much after firing 2 hitless innings.  Medium, athletic frame w/ high-waist, present lower half strength.  Projectable.  Pitches from a full wind-up w/ pre-set back foot into H ¾ release.  Quick arm w/ angle.  FB shows short arm-side run.  Threw one CB on this day that backed up on him.  Mixed in CH for the strikeout of a lefty, arm-speed w/ fade.  Settled in nicely in the 2^nd inning, developing feel for pitching w/ intent.  3 swing and misses on 11 swings.

Harley Wyatt RHP / OF / Rossview , TN / 2018

FB (81-84), CB (68-71)

Uncommitted RHP jumped from 78-81 in January to 81-84 after showing an 88 mile per hour arm from the OF.  Medium, athletic frame w/ lower half strength, some projection.  Pitches from a full wind-up w/ ¾ to H ¾ release.  Learning to repeat delivery.  Quick arm.  FB shows occasional arm-side run.  CB flashed above average w/ late bite, depth.  Around the zone.  2 swing and misses on 4 swings.
