Game Report: Dyersburg State @ Southwest Tennessee

On Sunday, Dyersburg State traveled to USA Baseball Stadium to take on Southwest Tennessee.  Southwest won both games while putting up double digit runs, taking game 1 10-3 and game 2 13-11.  This was a nice day with occasional rain.  Below are notes on select players (check out the Twitter feed for some video highlights!): 

Dyersburg State Sophomore Pitchers

LHP Tommy Morren: FB (84-88), SL (74-76), CH (76-79)

-       3.2 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K

Morren showed above average stuff once he settled in.  6’2 frame w/ present lower half strength, some physical projection.  Pitches from a full wind-up w/ ¾ release point.  Repeats.  FB shows above average arm-side run.  SL flashes tight ¾ tilt w/ depth.  Short, lateral break at times.  Mixed in a straight CH that flashed fade.  Around the zone (50 of 81 for strikes).  Shows ability to pitch w/ intent w/ the fastball, developing feel for SL.  Generated 10 of 40 swing and misses.

RHP Bryce O’Brien: FB (85-90), CB (75-77)

-       2.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K

O’Brien moved in from shortstop to finish off game 1.  Nice offensive player w/ plus arm strength at SS and developing bat, but future is likely on the mound.  5’11 athletic frame w/ some present strength, some projection.  Pitches from a full wind-up w/ H ¾ release.  Quiet, well-tempoed delivery.  FB shows occasional arm side run, mostly true.  Power medium downer CB w/ tight rotation, flashes as an out pitch.  Around the zone, developing ability to pitch w/ command and not just control.  Generated 3 swing and misses on 19 swings.

Southwest Tennessee Sophomore Pitchers

LHP Benton Garrison: FB (78-81), CB (66-69), CH (72)

-       5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K

Garrison pitched primarily off of a FB/CB combo to keep hitters off balance.  6’1, 185-pounder features athletic frame w/ some present lower half strength, some projection.  Pitches from a full wind-up w/ H ¾ release.  Fast worker gets the ball and goes.  FB shows arm side run.  Big downer CB features late bite, above average depth.  Mixed in a straight CH where arm-slot drops.  Strike-thrower shows ability to locate fastball, mix in CB at any time.  Feel for using the curveball as a strike pitch and as a put away pitch.  9 swing and misses on 45 swings.

RHP Noah Graham: FB (84-85), CB (71-72)

-       1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

Graham entered in a tough situation and was able to get out of it with minimal damage, needing just 9 pitches to do so.  6’1, 185-pounder features medium, athletic frame w/ some physical projection.  Pitched from the stretch only given the situation and pitched from an over the top release.  Straight FB.  Medium downer CB comes up slightly out of hand.  Around the zone w/ the FB, CB was alternating between being buried and not being finished.  0 swing and misses on 4 swings.

RHP Tyrek White: FB (87-90), CB (74-76)

-       2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

White delivered a 2 inning save, showing a projectable frame w/ present FB velocity.  6’3, 190-pounder has prototypical pitcher frame w/ some physicality in the lower half, projectable.  Pitches from a full wind-up into ¾ release.  Some effort w/ a glove tap before he gets into the arm circle.  FB flashes run and sink when down in the zone, straightens out when elevated.  Medium downer CB has late bite/depth.  Learning consistency to get the same break every time.  Around the zone, more control than command with the FB.  0 swing and misses on 10 swings.

Dyersburg State Sophomore Position Players

2B Daino Deas: 4-7, BB, HBP

Deas showed intriguing all-around skillset, featuring barrel feel w/ patient approach.  6’0, athletic, well-proportioned frame, close to mature.  Offensively, hits in a slightly open, slightly crouched stance w/ hand rhythm into knee to knee leg kick and proper load.  Can get out of control at times with the lower half w/ hips leaking.  Generates bat speed through the zone w/ natural loft.  Projectable pull power.  Pull oriented approach, flashes ability to stay on the outside pitch and drive it to right center.  Defensively, shows soft hands at 2B, arm strength was not tested.

OF Hagan Severance: 0-5

Severance showed above average run speed underway w/ ability to cover ground gap to gap in CF.  6’0, athletic w/ present lower half strength, projectable upper body strength.  Offensively, hits w/ a slightly open, slightly crouched stance w/ hand rhythm into leg kick and little separation.  Generates bat speed through the zone.  Pull oriented approach w/ hips leaking slightly.  Was swinging w/ all arms on this day.  Projects to hit as gets lower half more involved.  Defensively, showed above average speed underway w/ solid routes, projects to stay in CF.

OF Andrew Swanson: 4-9, HR

Swanson is a big, strong corner OF w/ the ability to hit the ball out of any part of the ballpark.  6’4, physical specimen w/ present strength, chiseled frame.  Pro body.  Offensively, hits w/ a straight on, slightly crouched stance w/ short hand rhythm into short shift of weight, toe tap and load.  Extension through the baseball.  Still head w/ repeatable swing.  Generates bat speed through the zone w/ natural loft.  Power to all fields.  Has a presence in the box.  Defensively, profiles in a corner OF spot w/ arm strength w/ carry to target. 

1B Ladarius Williams: 3-6, 2B, HR

Williams showed above average left-handed power w/ some glove feel at 1B.  5’11, athletic, physical frame w/ present lower half strength, close to mature.  Offensively, hits w/ an open, slightly crouched stance w/ short bat waggle into knee to knee mini leg kick and proper load.  Generates bat speed through the zone w/ natural loft.  Pull oriented approach w/ pull power.  Barrel feel w/ knack for making hard contact.  Defensively, shows soft hands w/ ability to scoop the baseball and save his infielders from errors. 

C Spencer Yankle: 3-7, 2 2B, HR

A Winthrop commit, Yankle showed off his power w/ 3 extra base hits and developing tools behind the plate.  6’2, athletic frame w/ some present strength, some projection.  Offensively, hits w/ a straight on, very slightly crouched stance w/ hand rhythm into shift of weight, short toe tap and load.  Ends up landing just short of where he starts.  Strong kid w/ pull power, bat-speed.  Ball jumps off the bat even when off balance.  Settled in timing wise late in game 2, where he found a number of barrels.  Defensively, shows ability to receive w/ soft hands, quality low target.  Can get a little stabby at times.  Shows above average arm strength w/ developing accuracy.

Southwest Tennessee Sophomore Position Players

OF Christian Busby: 4-8, 2 2B

Busby was a one man wrecking crew early, destroying fastballs before he saw a steady diet of off-speed stuff.  6’0, 170-pounder w/ lean, athletic frame w/ some physical projection.  Offensively, hits w/ a slightly open, very slightly crouched stance w/ bat rhythm into leg kick and proper load.  Generates bat speed through the zone w/ natural loft.  All fields approach w/ ability to work gap to gap.  Pull HR power.  Defensively, profiles best in a corner w/ developing arm strength.

SS Jacob Nobles: 2-4, HR, 4 BB

Nobles showed a strong all-around approach against quality pitching, showing 0 swing and misses on 6 swings.  6’0, 195-pounder shows present lower half strength, some physical projection in athletic frame.  Offensively, hits w/ a straight on, slightly crouched stance w/ short hand rhythm into short shift of weight w/ proper stride and load.  Pull oriented approach w/ knack for contact.  Shows good hands w/ ability to find barrels even when lower half is fooled.  Pull power.  Defensively, has a chance to stay at SS at the next level w/ soft hands, arm strength w/ carry through the target and solid first step quickness.  Profiles as above average defensive 2B.

Dyersburg State Freshman Pitchers

RHP Kody Davidson: FB (85-90, T91), SL (75-79), CH (75-79)

-       3 IP, 8 H, 10 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

Davidson shows exciting arm strength w/ feel for spin.  5’10, athletic frame w/ present lower half strength, some physical projection in the upper half.  Pitches from a full wind-up and L ¾ release.  Super quick arm.  FB shows early arm-side run.  Sweeping SL flashes 2 plane break, late tilt.  Flashed plus on this day.  CH w/ fade, occasional sink.  Around the zone w/ the FB, was elevated a little too much on this day.  Feel for subtracting from his FB to throw for strikes.  Confidence to throw SL in any count.  Generated 12 swing and misses on 28 swings, including 9 of 12 on the SL.

RHP Will Nash: FB (84-87), SL (75-78)

-       1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K

Nash brought some normalcy to this game, putting up one of the few zeroes recorded.  5’10, physical frame w/ present lower half strength.  Close to mature.  Pitches from a full wind-up w/ ¾ release.  Repeats a well tempoed delivery.  FB flashes above average arm side run, occasional sink.  Pitched off of his SL, which was inconsistent.  Occasional spinner, flashed above average at times w/ tight ¾ tilt, late life.  Around the zone (20 of 27 for strikes), developing command.  Generated 8 swing and misses on 14 swings, including 6 of 9 on the SL. 

Dyersburg State Freshman Position Players

3B Reed Smith: 3-8

Smith showed a strong all-around tools package, including running a 4.19 down the line from the right side, where he appeared to tweak a hamstring.  6’0, athletic profile w/ present strength, some physical projection.  Offensively, hits w/ a straight on, slightly crouched stance w/ toe tap and late load.  Generates bat speed through the zone w/ natural loft.  Timing was slightly off early on this day.  Pull oriented approach in game 1, showed an all fields, gap to gap approach in game 2.  Projects to hit for average w/ pull power.  Defensively, shows first step quickness w/ arm strength w/ carry to target. 

Southwest Tennessee Freshman Pitchers

RHP Chandler Gant: FB (83-86, T87), CB (72-74), CH (76)

-       1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

Physical righty showed arm strength w/ flashes of FB command.  6’0, 210 pound bulldog build w/ present strength, close to mature frame.  Pitches from a full wind-up w/ preset back foot into over the top release.  Quick arm.  Straight FB flashes occasional cut.  Inconsistent CB, developing proper rotation, flashes as medium downer.  Straight CH.  Feel for throwing strikes w/ FB w/ intent to both corners, developing secondary feel.  2 swing and misses on 14 swings.

Southwest Tennessee Freshman Position Players

DH Blake Daniels: 4-7

Daniels showed some barrel feel w/ bat speed.  6’1, 195-pound redshirt freshman features medium, athletic frame w/ some present strength, some projection.  Offensively, hits w/ an open, slightly crouched stance w/ low hand location w/ some hand rhythm into knee to knee leg kick and stride to square.  Pull oriented approach w/ gap power.  DNS defensively.

1B Chris Swanberg: 4-8, 2 2B, HR

Swanberg had a strong all-around 2 games for Southwest, delivering 3 extra base hits while playing a strong first base.  6’1, 215-pounder w/ close to mature build w/ present strength.  Offensively, hits w/ a slightly open, crouched stance w/ short hand rhythm into toe tap and load.  Generates bat speed through the zone w/ occasional loft.  Pull power.  Shows ability to use all fields offensively.  Defensively, shows good glove at first base w/ ability to scoop the baseball.
