An Anne Arundel County battle between two Power 25 teams on Monday afternoon featured No. 23 North County at No. 18 Broadneck. Following a leadoff double by Ryan Smolen in the bottom of the first inning, Ethan Soto drove in the first run of the game for Broadneck with a triple down the right field line. Soto then scored on a groundout to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead. The early scoring continued as the Bruins tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second extending their lead over the Knights to five.

On the mound for the Bruins was ace RHP Nick Gatton (Stevenson). Coming into the game, Gatton hadn’t given up a run in each of his previous two starts this season and nothing would change that in this one as he worked four scoreless innings allowing just two hits; to extend that scoreless games streak to three. Gatton did an excellent job of getting ahead in the count and keeping the ball down, forcing several groundouts and weak pop-outs.

Lefty Carson Lowman started for North County but struggled as Broadneck hitters had a lot of success jumping on pitches early in the count and thus keeping him from settling in. Lowman would finish the day giving up six runs on nine hits in three innings of work.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Bruins would double their lead, plating five runs on four hits and two walks. The inning was highlighted by a back-to-back 2-RBI doubles by Matt Isaac and Ben Schultz. Following a brief weather delay, the Bruins would drive in one more run to make it a 10-0 game. The Knights threatened in the top of the fifth getting runners on the corners but would fail to convert as the game ended via the mercy rule after five innings.

Dylan Tenney (1 for 3, 2 RBI’s) and Nick Toskov (2 for 2, 1 RBI, 1 R) also had a big day at the plate for the Bruins.

Whats Next: No. 18 Broadneck will host Old Mill on Wednesday while No. 23 North County looks to get back on track with another tough matchup on the road at No. 25 Severna Park. That game is also Wednesday afternoon.
