Governor Mifflin 4, Warwick 2

A trip to the District III - Class 6A championship game and a bid to the PIAA state playoffs was on the line Wednesday when Governor Mifflin and Warwick met at War Memorial Field in Ephrata PA. The loser, while not eliminated from PIAA tournament consideration would have to win a consolation game for the 3rd bid out of District III against Penn Manor, a 3-0 loser to Dallastown Area in the other semifinal.

Mustangs senior right-hander Noah Weber, a Northampton CC recruit, certainly did his part working 6.1 innings and leaving with nobody on in the top of the 7th inning with Governor Mifflin leading 4-2. Noah Angstadt relieved Weber and earned the save, but not before a bit of drama ensued.

Sophomore Brendan Martin greeted Angstadt with a single and moved to second base when pinch hitter Ethan Heller coaxed a bases loaded walk. Both runners moved up a base on a ground out to put the tying runs in scoring position with two outs, but Angstadt was able to get a fly ball to end the threat and preserve the win.

Governor Mifflin scored single runs in the first two innings thanks in large part to senior Ajay Szczepkowski, a Harford CC recruit.  The Mustangs' leadoff hitter began the bottom of the 1st inning by lacing a single to left and later scored on a sacrifice fly.  He also drove in the game's second run with a sharp single with two outs in the 2nd inning.

The Mustangs doubled their lead in the bottom of the 5th inning thanks to a double from senior Austin Baker, a Penn State Harrisburg recruit, and a pair of defensive miscues by the Warriors. Baker finished the night 2-for-2 with a walk.

Warwick cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the 6th innings on a two-run homerun by Justin Byler, but were not able to knot the score in spite of threatening in the 7th.

Weber picked up the win going 6.1 innings while allowing five hits and one walk.  Zach Peters, a Kutztown recruit, was the hard luck loser for Warwick.  The senior righty worked six innings, battling through an issue with his pitching hand, allowing just two earned runs on five hits.
