The Prep Baseball Report IA Top Prospect Games event took place on Sunday, August 5, 2018. The event was held at the Robert W. Plaster Complex in Cedar Rapids, IA; home of Mount Mercy University. The event featured prospects from the 2019 grad class; and included many breakout performances from this year's participants. Players showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff and numerous college coaches in attendance. 

There were a number of great individual performances this year at the IA Top Prospect Games.

As we drill down into the statistics:

Braden Albert, LHP, Cedar Rapids Xavier, 2019
5-foot-10, 150-pound left-handed pitcher. #47 player in current Iowa rankings; recent commit to Upper Iowa University. Smaller quick twitch frame. Clean compact arm action. Ball comes out well in front. Was 76-79 mph, touching 80 mph, with arm-side run and sink. Flashes depth on solid/avg. 1/7 breaking ball. Above avg. run and sink on changeup. Velo was down after long summer; previously up to 86 mph; shows ability to pitch and will be solid addition to Upper Iowa program.

Ethan Bernard, SS/RHP, Council Bluffs St. Albert, 2019
6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #80 player in current IA 2019 rankings. 6.64 runner. Well above avg. athlete. Progressing to translate tools to game, tall athletic stance, good bat speed, flashes hard pull contact, line drive approach, 89 mph exit velocity. Solid overall actions, avg. glove, makes routine plays, accurate arm and covers ground well in field, 77 mph arm across infield. Works through ball, exaggerated crow hop, fields on side occasionally, accurate arm to target, 84 mph arm from outfield. On mound; short rocker step into medium balance, clean compact arm action, solid extension to plate. Fastball was 79-81 mph with occasional cutting action. Shows tighter spin and shape on breaking ball with occasional late break. Cut action on straight changeup with avg. fade.

Andrew Cook, 3B/RHP, Williamsburg, 2019
6-foot, 225-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 8.00 runner. Square stance, choppy body load, present strength, stiff path through contact, shows ability to drive balls to gap, 85 mph exit velocity. Avg. footwork and hands on left-side of infield, stiffer arm action, accurate throws to bag, 72 mph arm across infield. On mound; higher tuck and turn balance point, stiff arm action, lands across body. Fastball was 71-74 mph with occasional run and sink. Sweeping break on 11/5 slider.

Harrison Cook, RHP, Cedar Rapids Prairie, 2019
6-foot-5, 180-pound right-handed pitcher. #2 player in IA 2019 rankings and #196 in PBR Overall for class. U. of Kentucky commit. Lean frame with athleticism. Above avg. tempo and rhythm to delivery. Long arm action, shows ability to repeat, and has extension to plate. Fastball was 86-89 mph with late arm side run and sink. Breaking ball has tight spin with late sharp break for strikes. Changeup is thrown at fastball arm speed; producing late arm side sink down and away from LHH.

Jackson Fisher, C/RHP, Chariton, 2019
6-foot-2, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #37 ranked player in IA 2019 class. 7.02 runner. Square stance with easy load and stride, line drive approach, produces hard contact to mid/pull side of field, 91 mph exit velocity. Athletic behind the plate, soft hands, above avg. carry on throws, has accuracy to bag, above avg. receiver and blocker, 78 mph arm strength with 1.96-2.08 pop times. On mound; tuck and turn balance point, lands across body, short arm action, cuts across body in release with avg. extension to plate. Fastball was 81-83 mph with slight cutting action to plate. Loose spin with small break on curveball. Flat action on changeup, firm, with minimal action.

Colton Gillespie, 3B/RHP, Kirksville (MO), 2019
6-foot, 225-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.34 runner. Taller balanced setup and swing, avg. use of lower half with stiff legs, clean path, extremely strong, avg. barrel awareness, 97 mph exit velocity. Higher fielding position, avg. range, sure hands, accurate to bag on throws, 78 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; good body control, lands inline to catcher, short arm action. Fastball was 78-80 mph with varying movement to both sides of plate. Both breaking balls are quality pitches. Slider has Frisbee break with good depth and curveball shows sharp bit; breaking down and away from RHH.

Blake Grevengoed, OF/RHP, WDM Valley, 2019
6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #84 player in current IA 2019 rankings. 6.95 runner. Body load, has extension through contact, stays on and through, shows pop in bat to oppo gap, ability to hit ball where it’s pitched, 84 mph exit velocity. Up tempo, works through ball, aggressive routes, above avg. arm with accuracy and carry to target, 88 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; long unraveling arm action, lands inline to plate, has solid athleticism and tempo, shows ability to throw 2-3 pitches for strikes. Fastball was 82-84 mph with late run and sink into RHH. Late break on 11/5 curveball with solid shape and spin. Hard running action on changeup to arm-side on flat plane.

Gregory Hall, OF/RHP, Linn Marr, 2019
6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.02 runner. Lean athletic frame, early rhythm in hands, become stagnant in load/stride, flashes occasional pop in bat, line drive and fly ball contact, interesting follow in 2019 class with simple adjustments, 88 mph exit velocity. Easier actions in field, sure hands, limited front side, solid carry and accuracy on throws, 86 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; quick turn into medium balance point, heavy arm wrap on backside, lands across body, shows extension out front. Fastball was 79-81 mph with slight downhill plane to plate. Sweeping break on 11/5 curveball. Shows solid fade and sink on changeup.

Mitchell Halloran, SS/RHP, West Fork, 2019
6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.51 runner. Wiggles bat for rhythm, larger leg kick trigger, some stiffness in legs, avg. pull side contact, flashes hard line drives to middle of field, 78 mph exit velocity. Has solid athleticism in field, raw mechanically, shows carry and accuracy to bag, 76 mph arm across infield. On mound; has early tempo and rhythm to delivery, clean compact arm action, long strider down mound almost bottoming out and losing lower half. Fastball was 75-77 mph with straight action to plate. Spinning 11/5 curveball with minimal break to plate. Changeup is straight with flat action.

Patrick Hayes, LHP/OF, Rosemount (MN), 2019
6-foot-4, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; stretch only, long arm action from ¾ slot. Avg. use of glove side in delivery. Tends to run down mound after release. Flashes late arm side run on fastball at 78-81 mph; touching 82 mph. Sweeping action with slower velo on breaking ball. Floating action on changeup for strikes. 7.87 runner. Drops hands into lower hitting slot, length to contact, avg. timing, spray contact, 73 mph exit velocity. Works through ball, quicker release, solid accuracy to bag, 78 mph arm from outfield.

Isaiah Henrichs, LHP/1B, Carlisle, 2019
5-foot-9, 200-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #46 player in current IA 2019 rankings. Strong durable build with thick lower half. Clean arm action, ¾ slot, strike thrower with 3 pitches, ball comes out clean in front, and has life with fastball jumping on hitter. Fastball was 83-86 mph with varying action to both sides of plate. Flashed sharp break on 2/8 curveball with tight spin. Running action on changeup, thrown near fastball arm speed, and is a usable third pitch. 7.8 runner. Square stance, narrow base, limited use of front side, uses hands in swing, solid present strength, spray contact, 89 mph exit velocity. Soft glove and is solid receiver around the base, avg. range, handles position well, 77 mph arm across infield.

Brady Herzic, RHP, Iowa City, 2019
6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed pitcher. Long rocker step, medium crouched balance point, lands against stiff front leg, short arm action from OT slot. Fastball was 75-78 mph with flat action to plate. Tumbling shape on 12/6 break ball. Shows appropriate fade and sink on changeup; thrown near fastball arm speed.

Kolten Hinrichsen, RHP, Washington, 2019
5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed pitcher. #113 player in current Iowa 2019 rankings. Simple turn into balance point, longer action action, OT slot, works baseball downhill to plate. Fastball was 78-80 mph with slight cutting action. 12/6 curveball has solid spin and shape for strikes. Shows command and feel for solid changeup with run and sink action.

Bryce Hoyle, LHP, Greene County, 2019
5-foot-10, 197-pound left-handed pitcher. Comes set closed to plate, lands closed, uptempo delivery, high glove side creating deception and hiding baseball. Fastball was 77-79 mph; occasionally drops arm slot to create run and sink action. Lower arm slot creating slider action on 2/8 breaking ball. Changeup is thrown with good arm action creating solid run and sink to plate.

Clayton Hromidko, RHP, Cedar Rapids Prairie, 2019
6-foot, 175-pound right-handed pitcher. #24 player in current IA 2019 rankings. Coils into balance point, strides inline to catcher, lands with front foot open to plate. Compact arm action with quickness out front producing 86-89 mph fastballs, touched 91 mph once, with avg. control. 12/6 breaking ball shows flashes of depth.  Solid sink on changeup thrown on downhill plane to plate.

Cole Kaufman, LHP/1B, Waukee, 2019
6-foot, 190-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. #75 player in current IA 2019 rankings. On mound; higher crouched balance point with turn, hides baseball, compact arm action, lands inline, shows extension and finish to plate. Fastball was 79-83 mph with late tailing action away from RHH. Breaking ball has improved, thrown with conviction, producing tighter rotation, and sharper break for strikes. Flat running action on changeup with avg. fade. 7.65 runner. Rolling hand rhythm, body load, looks to elevate, hard pull side contact, line drive and fly ball approach, would benefit from greater extension through contact, solid pop in bat, 83 mph exit velocity. Sure soft hands in field with above avg. arm at position, moves well in field, easier actions and is comfortable around the bag, 81 mph arm across infield.

Chase Keeney, LHP, Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 2019
6-foot, 175-pound left-handed pitcher. #27 player in current Iowa 2019 rankings. Controlled tempo on mound, lands across body creating deception, low ¾ slot. Fastball was 78-80 mph with late varying action and rarely misses above the thigh of hitter. Shows advanced command to both sides of plate and fastball has well above avg. movement. Frisbee breaking ball disrupts timing with bigger 2/8 shape and break. Hard late sink on changeup in bottom of zone.

Drew Logel, 3B/RHP, Muscatine, 2019
6-foot-4, 205-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #99 player in current IA 2019 rankings. 7.72 runner. Present strength in large frame, flashes hard contact, limited use of lower half creating stiffness in swing, mid/pull approach with flashes of pop in bat, 91 mph exit velocity. Heavier feet in field, tends to funnel underneath body, avg. hands and feet, 78 mph arm across infield. On mound; long rocker step into higher tuck and turn, pause at top, hard stab in arm action, high ¾ arm slot. Fastball was relatively straight at 80-82 mph with slight varying movement. 12/6 curveball has wobbly shape with inconsistent break. Avg. changeup with flat action; tends to leave arm side of plate.

TJ Martin, LHP/1B, Holy Angels (MN), 2019
6-foot-6, 180-pound left-handed pitcher. #107 player in current MN 2019 rankings. Long lean frame, easy effort in delivery, short crouched balance point, short arm action from ¾ slot. Fastball was 76-79 mph with late arm-side run and sink. Flashes late break on 2/8 sweeping curveball; with ability to show in zone and take away from hitter. Avg. fade on changeup with varying cut and run action to plate.

Cauy Massner, SS/RHP, Mediapolis, 2019
6-foot, 155-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.64 runner. Slightly closed stance, choppy rhythm, avg. flyball contact, gap to gap approach, 80 mph exit velocity. Solid athlete in field, sure hands, works through baseball, accurate arm to bag, 78 mph arm across infield. On mound; short turn into medium balance point. One piece pie arm action producing 77-79 mph fastballs for strikes. 11/5 breaking ball has loopy shape and avg. break at plate. Inconsistent shape and spin on changeup currently.

Sam McCune, LHP, WDM Valley, 2019
6-foot-4, 225-pound left-handed pitcher. #26 player in current Iowa 2019 rankings. Projectable frame and has begun to lean out over last 6-8 months. Builds tempo in delivery, higher knee to balance point, gets out and over front leg, clean arm action. Fastball was 79-81 mph with running action to arm side of plate. Shows solid fade and sink on changeup. Throws slower 12/6 curveball which is solid/avg. and harder slider with more lateral plane and sharper break.

Chase McDole, RHP/SS, Washington, 2019
5-foot-10, 155-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #114 player in current IA 2019 rankings. On mound; simple delivery, some wrap in arm action, clean out front, lands inline to catcher, shows extension and finish to delivery. Fastball was 76-78 mph with solid 2-seam run and sink. Avg. shape and spin on 12/6 breaking ball. Cut action on changeup for strikes. 7.72 runner. Narrow stance, choppy rhythm, mid/away approach, solid line drive contact with avg. pop in bat, 75 mph exit velocity. Aggressive routes, tends to squat to field, avg. feet-glove-actions, accurate arm to bag with long release on throws, 72 mph arm across infield.

Robert Porth, RHP/OF, Waterloo Columbus, 2019
5-foot-11, 140-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; longer rocker step, medium balance point, slight pauses in arm action. Fastball was 75-78 mph with straight action to plate. Loopy shape on 11/5 breaking ball. Flashes solid sink on changeup for strikes. 7.38 runner. Square stance, drops into lower hand slot, choppy swing plane, uses mid/pull side of field, solid line drive and ground ball contact, 79 mph exit velocity. Works through ball, tends to field underneath body, faster tempo, long clean arm action, solid accuracy and carry to target, 77 mph arm strength from outfield.

Connor Reed, RHP/1B, Pekin, 2019
6-foot-2, 195-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #67 player in IA 2019 rankings. On mound; medium tuck and turn balance point, short pie arm action, swings down mound and lands inline to catcher. Fastball was 83-85 mph with cutting action to plate. Tight spin with avg.shape and break on curveball. Changeup is overly firm creating flat action to plate. 7.26 runner. Body load, leg kick trigger, solid present strength, avg. timing and rhythm, spray contact, 89 mph exit velocity. Sure hands and athletic at position, well above avg. arm strength, solid receiver and footwork around bag, 84 mph arm across infield.

Brody Sandin, RHP, Bondurant-Farrar, 2019
6-foot-1, 190-pound right-handed pitcher. #62 player in current Iowa 2019 rankings. Stronger durable build, simple delivery, longer arm action, some shoulder stiffness, has extension to plate. Fastball was 80-84 mph with flashes of run and sink. Flashed solid depth on curveball with sharper late break. Changeup has solid fade and sink to arm-side of plate.

Bryce Schares, RHP/1B, Don Bosco, 2019
6-foot-3, 205-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; quicker tempo, long slinging arm action, clean out front, has extension to plate, with solid athleticism in delivery. Fastball was 80-82 mph with later arm side running action. Loose spin on 12/6 breaking ball, tends to back up on hitter. Firm changeup with arm side run and flat action to plate. 8.15 runner. Open athletic stance, strides to square, easy hand load, clean path, shows some ability to drive ball to pull side, 89 mph exit velocity. Stiff hands, solid footwork and athleticism for position, receives well around bag, 79 mph arm across infield.

Eli Scott, 1B/LHP, Linn Marr, 2019
6-foot, 185-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.62 runner. Shows solid swing at plate, has rhythm, stays on and through contact, present strength with ability to drive baseball, uses whole field, 82 mph exit velocity. Makes routine plays, low fielding position, avg. hands, comfortable around bag, 74 mph arm across infield. On mound; crouches into balance point, front foot outside knee, land inline, heavy wrap on backside of arm action. Fastball was 75-77 mph with slight varying movement to plate. Slurvey 1/7 breaking ball with early shape and break. Cut action on changeup with minimal fading action.

Nathan Steenblock, OF/LHP, Dowling Catholic, 2019
6-foot, 180-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #16 player in current IA 2019 rankings and South Dakota State commit. Plus runner turning in a 6.46 60-yard dash. Balanced swing, easy effort, looks to elevate, flashes above avg. power to pull side gap, 91 mph exit velocity. Athletic in field, soft hands, shows ability to defend, stiffer shouldered arm action, solid accuracy to target, 84 mph arm from outfield. On mound; higher athletic balance point, clean arm action from higher ¾ slot, some shoulder stiffness in delivery. 80-82 mph fastball with late 2-seam running action. Confident in breaking ball, throws in any count, with sweeping break, and 2/8 shape. Above avg. fade and sink on changeup.

Jake Swanson, LHP/1B, Central Dewitt, 2019
6-foot-5, 230-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Larger frame on mound, short arm action, lands across body, arm cuts across body after release. Fastball was 79-81 mph with slight running action to arm side of plate. Later breaking 1/7 curveball thrown with conviction. Stiffer wrist on changeup; produces solid/avg. fade and action. 7.82 runner. Preset hands, body load, chops down and through baseball, ground ball and line drive approach, avg. contact, 81 mph exit velocity. Avg. flexibility to field, tends to funnel under body, sure hands, solid receiver, 80 mph arm across infield.

Bryan Verdon, RHP, Davenport North, 2019
5-foot-11, 190-pound right-handed pitcher. #64 player in current Iowa 2019 rankings. Strong compact build. Bulldog mentality on mound. Higher tuck and turn, leaks early off rubber, some effort in delivery, shows ability to throw strikes. Fastball works on downhill plane with varying action to both sides of plate. Was 83-86 mph at event; recently been up to as high as 88 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape with avg. depth. Best secondary is hard 78-80 mph cutter; showing sharp late break with smaller shape for strikes.

Kurby Vowels, RHP, Waverly-Shell Rock, 2019
5-foot-11, 155-pound right-handed pitcher. Travels across rubber, hitchy actions at balance point, aggressive down mound with compact arm action. Fastball was straight at 76-78 mph. Shows depth on 11/5 curveball with flashes of sharp break. Solid changeup with run and sink action for strikes.

Zachary Wirt, RHP, Davenport Central, 2019
6-foot-2, 180-pound right-handed pitcher. Medium build, higher balance point, clean compact arm action, shows extension and finish to plate. Fastball was straight at 78-80 mph with slight varying action to plate. Avg. shape and spin on 11/5 breaking ball for strikes. Changeup is straight with above avg. down action at plate.

Cody Wolfe, RHP/3B, Ballard, 2019
6-foot, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #109 player in current IA 2019 rankings. On mound; controlled tempo on mound, higher balance point, lands inline to catcher, clean compact arm action, gets out and over front side falling down mound. Fastball was 79-80 mph with varying action to both sides of plate. Adds and subtracts breaking ball with solid ability to land for strikes. Solid fade and sink on changeup; works bottom of zone. 7.15 runner. Relatively simple swing, line drive approach, square stance with knee to knee trigger, some length to contact with arm bar in load, gap to gap approach, solid line drive and fly ball contact, 90 mph exit velocity. Solid first step, tends to stop to field, avg. hands and feet, makes routine plays, long release on throws with accuracy to bag, 81 mph arm across infield.

Rian Yates, RHP, Oskaloosa, 2019
6-foot-4, 175-pound right-handed pitcher. #25 player in current Iowa 2019 rankings. Long lean frame. Shows solid body control and athleticism on mound, compact arm action, flashes of quickness out front. Fastball was 83-85 mph with flashes of late cut action. Hard late break on curveball with 12/6 shape. Late run and sink on changeup thrown at fastball arm speed for strikes.

Sam Young, RHP/3B, Dowling Catholic, 2019
6-foot-3, 200-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #65 player in current IA 2019 rankings. 7.08 runner. Physical build on mound. Some stiffness in delivery, works up to down, compact arm action, good quickness out front. Fastball was 80-83 mph, has recently been up to 86 mph, with late run and sink. Avg. feel for breaking ball, slower velocity, and lacks depth and tightness currently. Avg. movement and fade on changeup; thrown with stiff wrist. Open stance, body load, easy hand path, some stiffness keeping 2 hands on bat, drives ball well to middle of field with present strength, 93 mph exit velocity. Solid hands and feet, avg. flexibility with high fielding position, makes solid plays, cutting action on throws from pie arm action, 79 mph arm across infield.
