The Prep Baseball Report IA Underclass Prospect Games event took place on Monday, August 30, 2018. The event was held at Duane Banks Field on the campus of the U. of Iowa. The event featured prospects from the 2020 & 2021 grad classes; and included many breakout performances from this year's participants. Players showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff and numerous college coaches in attendance. 

There were a number of great individual performances this year at the IA Underclass Prospect Games.

As we drill down into the statistics: 

+ 20 players ran sub-4.5 Home-To-First times.
+ 36 players recorded 85+ mph Exit Velocities
+ 15 players recorded 80+ mph Infield Throws
+ 17 players recorded 80+ mph Outfield Throws
+ 7 catchers recorded 70+ mph throws to second base
+ 5 catchers recorded sub-2.1 Pop Times
+  28 pitchers were 80+ mph on the mound

Gehrig Christensen, C, Urbandale, 2021
6-foot-1, 160-pound left-handed hitting catcher. University of Iowa commit. 4.82 H-1B time. Slight body load, clean path, line drive approach with flashes of pop to middle of field, 85 mph exit velocity. Above avg. setup with athleticism behind plate, clean release, accuracy to bag, 76 mph arm strength with 2.01-2.09 pop times.

Kannon Coakley, C, Maquoketa, 2021
6-foot-1, 195-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 4.88 H-1B time. Tall stance, easy shoulder load, shows ability to drive baseball to middle of field and oppo gap, consistent line drive contact, 84 mph exit velocity. Strong base, good footwork, clean exchange and release, accurate to bag with carry on throws, 74 mph arm strength with 2.01-2.1 pop times.

Sam Nicolino, C, Des Moines Roosevelt, 2020
5-foot-11, 171-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 4.34 H-1B time. Square stance, no stride, simple swing, avg. rhythm, line drive swing plane, showed solid line drive contact to mid/pull side of field, 86 mph exit velocity. Side saddle set up, stiffer arm action, avg. receiver, 69 mph arm strength with 2.4-2.5 pop times.

Dylan Page, C/RHP, Linn-Mar, 2021
6-foot-1, 195-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.5 H-1B time. Large frame with present strength, choppy knee to knee trigger, short to baseball, solid contact, pull approach, flashes pop in bat, would benefit from greater extension through baseball, 82 mph exit velocity. Solid footwork, strength in hands to stick pitches in zone, avg. blocking ability, 64 mph arms strength with 2.4-2.5 pop times.

Mason Porepp, C, Southeast Polk, 2020
5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 4.63 H-1B time. Open stance with knee to knee trigger, stays short to contact, shows pop in bat to mid/pull side of field, slashy line drive swing plane, 85 mph exit velocity. Athletic behind plate, moves well with flexibility, has strong hands and keeps pitches in zone, longer exchange with lower slot on release, 74 mph arm strength with 2.15-2.28 pop times.

Jackson Powell, C, Ankeny Centennial, 2021
5-foot-11, 175-pound left-handed hitting catcher. 5.13 H-1B. Square stance with pre-set hands and load, clean path, avg. pop in bat, consistent solid contact, mid/pull approach, 74 mph exit velocity. Solid receiver, works early through plate, some length to exchange with quick release, avg. accuracy to bag, 73 mph arm strength with 2.03-2.15 pop times.

Logan VanLaanen, C, Bay Port (WI), 2021
5-foot-10, 230-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 4.89 H-1B time. Open stance, choppy load and stride, early shoulder tilt, looks to elevate baseball, solid ground ball and fly ball contact to pull side with flashes of pop in bat, 84 mph exit velocity. Works through plate, long stride, clean exchange, avg. accuracy to bag, solid receiver, avg. mobility and quickness, 70 mph arm strength with 2.15-2.26 pop times.

Easton Voigt, C/RHP, Sioux City East, 2021
5-foot-10, 145-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.9 H-1B. Wide stance with knee to knee trigger, gap to gap approach, strong line drive contact with ability to use whole field, 80 mph exit velocity. Short repeatable arm action with quick feet behind plate, has flexibility and moves well to block, accurate throws to bag, sticks pitches in zone and shows ability to receive, 66 mph arm strength with 2.15-2.26 pop times.

Griffin Wilder, C, North Scott, 2020
6-foot, 215-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 4.52 H-1B time. Physical athletic player, easy leg kick trigger, clean uphill path, looks to elevate baseball, flashed hard contact, mid/pull side of field, 86 mph exit velocity. Good balance and footwork behind plate, quick release, stiffer low ¾ slot, avg. accuracy to bag, solid receiver with present strength, mobile behind plate with ability to block, 73 mph arm strength with 2.06-2.15 pop times.

Tate Wishard, C, Sioux Falls O’Gorman (SD), 2020
5-foot-10, 200-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 4.7 H-1B time. Compact frame with strength, ability to use whole field, has strength in swing with flashes of power, hard line drive contact to mid/pull side of field, 90 mph exit velocity. Longer arm action with quick release, raw actions behind plate, big motor and plays with energy, 76 mph arm strength with 2.01-2.1 pop times.
