The Prep Baseball Report IA Underclass Prospect Games event took place on Monday, August 30, 2018. The event was held at Duane Banks Field on the campus of the U. of Iowa. The event featured prospects from the 2020 & 2021 grad classes; and included many breakout performances from this year's participants. Players showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff and numerous college coaches in attendance. 

There were a number of great individual performances this year at the IA Underclass Prospect Games.

As we drill down into the statistics: 

+ 20 players ran sub-4.5 Home-To-First times.
+ 36 players recorded 85+ mph Exit Velocities
+ 15 players recorded 80+ mph Infield Throws
+ 17 players recorded 80+ mph Outfield Throws
+ 7 catchers recorded 70+ mph throws to second base
+ 5 catchers recorded sub-2.1 Pop Times
+  28 pitchers were 80+ mph on the mound

pitchER EVALS (ALPHABETICAL)

Luke Anderson, LHP/OF, Central Dewitt, 2020
6-foot-3, 185-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Projectable frame with present lean strength. Controlled tempo into shorter balance point, long sideways arm path and is clean out front with minimal effort. Fastball was 79-82 mph with late running action at plate. Curveball has early 1/7 shape, avg. spin, and tends to leave arm-side. Occasionally drops elbow on changeup creating flat action to plate. 4.66 H-1B time. Square stance with balanced short stride, arm bar load, repeats swing well, has pop in bat, works gap well, 84 mph exit velocity. Solid athlete in field, confident routes and angles, lower arm slot, easy effort, has carry and accuracy to target, 82 mph arm strength from outfield.

Will Armstrong, SS/RHP, Des Moines Roosevelt, 2020
5-foot-11, 145-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.9 H-1B time. Athletic stance with rhythm, short path through zone, works uphill, consistent solid line drive contact, 78 mph exit velocity. Active feet with soft hands, works through ball well, has actions in field, shows range to both sides, solid accuracy to bag, 77 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; compact delivery with easy arm action. Shows hand speed out front and is consistent strike thrower. Fastball was 77-79 mph with varying action to plate. Good feel for slower 11/5 breaking ball. Solid fade on changeup thrown near fastball arm speed. Follow in 2020 class.

Jake Benson, RHP/OF, Southeast Polk, 2020
5-foot-10, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; swings into slight tuck and turn, lands inline, clean compact arm action with quickness out front. Fastball was 78-81 mph with flashes of life and varying action to plate. 11/5 curveball has early break with slow rolling shape. Tends to slow arm on changeup creating flat action. 4.71 H-1B time. Active load and stride, lots of moving parts, line drive swing, inconsistent contact, flashes hard line drives to middle of field, 86 mph exit velocity. Plays fast in field, works through ball, raw crow hop mechanics, clean arm action, solid carry and accuracy to target, 82 mph arm strength from outfield.

Reece Beuter, 3B/RHP, Dike-New Hartford, 2020
6-foot, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.89 H-1B time. Taller athletic frame with wiry present strength. Body load, lower hand slot, works uphill, gets stuck on back-side in swing, has pop in bat, fly ball and line drive contact, 94 mph exit velocity. Solid footwork with above avg. arm, sure hands, makes routine plays, solid accuracy and carry to bag, 86 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; simple delivery, lands inline, long arm action and delivers from slight pie arm slot. Fastball was 78-82 mph with riding life up in zone. Solid shape and spin with avg. depth on 11/5 breaking ball. Flat action on changeup currently.

Cael Boever, SS/RHP, Sioux City Heelan, 2021                       
6-foot, 155-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.8 H-1B. Square stance, easy stride, repeats swing well, has rhythm, line drive approach, quick hands with solid bat speed, 84 mph exit velocity. Athletic in field, works through ball, easy actions, above avg. carry on throws, accurate to bag, 77 mph arm strength across infield. On mound, simple delivery, lands slightly across body, easy effort on release. Fastball was 79-81 mph with slight running action for strikes. Good 11/5 shape with tight spin on breaking ball. Changeup thrown with fastball arm action; creates above avg. fade and sink.

Evan Borst, RHP/SS, Norwalk, 2021
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Medium balance point, hitchy front leg, lands inline, has rhythm in delivery, clean compact arm action. Shows ability to repeat delivery well. Fastball was 80-83 mph with varying action. Solid shape with tighter spin on 11/5 curveball. Above avg. fade and sink on changeup. 5.06 H-1B time. Compact frame with present strength, leg kick trigger with active hand load, shows pop in bat, strong pull side line drives and fly balls, 88 mph exit velocity. Fields out front, sure hands, works through ball, has actions in field, quick release and follows throws to target, 78 mph arm strength across infield. Follow in 2021 class.

Brody Brecht, OF/RHP, Ankeny, 2021
6-foot-3, 185-pound right-handed 2-way player. Long lean athletic frame with wiry strength. One of top follows in Iowa 2021 class. 4.7 H-1B time. Open stance, body load, consistent line drive contact, even while lacking extension through contact- shows above avg. pop in bat, 89 mph exit velocity. Athletic in field, quicker release, avg. momentum through ball, online throws with carry and accuracy, 90 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; high leg balance point with front foot outside knee, clean arm action, OT slot, minimal use of lower half, some occasional finish to plate. Fastball was 81-84 mph with late cutting action to plate. Avg. breaking ball should continue to develop with 11/5 shape. Sink and tumbling action on changeup. Mechanics lack polish but projects through the roof. As he continues to mature and develop; Brecht has a chance to be one of the better players in the state.

Colton Butler, LHP, Oskaloosa, 2020
6-foot-3, 205-pound left-handed pitcher. Larger frame on mound. Crouches into balance point, long arm action, delivers from OT slot, occasionally drives ball downhill. Fastball was 77-80 mph with consistent command and late arm-side running action. Tight rotation with 2/8 shape on breaking ball for strikes. Tends to open early and slows arm on changeup. Butler is a follow in the 2020 class and could make jumps with continued development and instruction.

Tom Casey, 3B/RHP, Dubuque Senior, 2020
6-foot-2, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Longer athletic frame. 4.84 H-1B. Balanced stance, leg kick trigger, stays on and through contact, consistent line drive hitter, some stiffness through contact but squares baseball, 86 mph exit velocity. Good footwork and fields out front, usable hands that are soft and receives ball well, has playable actions, accurate arm to bag with carry, 82 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; shows rhythm and tempo in delivery, clean compact arm action, lands inline to catcher. Shows ability to drive ball downhill at 82-83 mph with varying action at plate. Breaking ball was 70-73 mph and thrown for strikes and shows feel for changeup at 73-74 mph.

Hudson Dunwoody, 2B/RHP, Ankeny, 2020
5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.88 H-1B. Active rolling hand load, pull approach, some length to contact, ground ball and line drive contact, 76 mph exit velocity. Active feet, needs improvement with footwork, sure hands, stiffer actions, long arm swing with carry to bag, 76 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; leaks out of balance point early, long pie arm action from ¾ slot. Varying action on 74-77 mph fastball. Solid shape and spin on sweeping 10/4 breaking ball.

Jacob Fees, 3B/RHP, Norwalk, 2020
6-foot, 215-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.91 H-1B time. Larger frame with present strength, easy path, shows power to pull side of field, looks to drive and lift baseball, consistent hard contact, 90 mph exit velocity. Playable hands and feet in field, avg. range and quickness, fields out front, sure hands, with quicker release and accuracy to bag, 75 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; simple rocker step in to balance point, long stab down in arm action, clean out front, upright on release to plate. Fastball was 75-78 mph with straight action to plate. Slower 11/5 curveball with early break. Solid fade and sink; shows feel for changeup for strikes.

Nile Foss, LHP/OF, Carlisle, 2020
5-foot-10, 165-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Short balance point with slight crouch, hides ball from hitter, easy effort in delivery, fastball is sneaky quick and jump on hitters. 80-82 mph with varying action and is deceptively quick to plate. Tends to slow arm on breaking ball creating inconsistent shape and spin. Throws above avg. changeup at fastball arm speed; has late fade and sink away from barrels. 4.84 H-1B time. Open stance, leg kick trigger, line drive swing plane, inconsistent contact, mid/pull approach, 78 mph exit velocity. Athletic arm action, easier actions, sure hands, avg. routes and angles, has carry and accuracy to throws, 83 mph arms strength from outfield.

Elijah Frank, RHP/1B, Bay Port (WI), 2021
6-foot-2, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Quicker tempo into medium balance point, low ¾ to sidearm slot, collapses down mound and loses lower half. Slot creates life with late running action to plate at 77-78 mph. Sweeping break on curveball with early shape and looser spin. Shows arm-side run and fade on changeup. 4.5 H-1B time. Preset load, gap to gap hitter, shows pop in bat, consistent line drives, swing lacks rhythm but consistently squares baseball, 84 mph exit velocity. Sure hands at first, comfortable around bag, makes accurate throws, 81 mph arm strength across infield.

Nolan Frey, LHP/OF, Iowa City Liberty, 2020
6-foot-1, 170-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; travels across rubber and lands towards first base creating crossfire delivery. Consistent strike thrower and fastball was 74-77 mph. Shows ability to land 1/7 breaking ball for strikes. Inconsistent feel for changeup; left short of plate. 4.71 H-1B time. Body load, quicker hands, line drive path, flashes pop in bat, falls off at contact, 86 mph exit velocity. Athletic in field, avg. footwork, plays fast, sure hands, quick release with solid carry and accuracy to target, 80 mph arm strength from outfield.

Weston Fulk, LHP/1B, Ankeny, 2021
6-foot-3, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Projects well on mound; good body control, easy effort in delivery, long clean arm action with slight wrap on back-side. Ball comes out clean in front with late run and sink at 80-82 mph for strikes. 1/7 breaking ball shows flashes of above avg. late break for strikes. Throws changeup out of same slot and same arm speed as fastball; has above avg. late fade and sink. 4.84 H-1B time. Body load, some length to contact with arm bar, has extension through contact, consistently works gaps with line drive approach showing pop in bat, 87 mph exit velocity. Athletic at first, moves well, shows soft hands, and receives well around the bag, 78 mph arm strength across infield. Fulk is a strong follow in the 2021 class and will be monitored closely over the next year with his progress.

Chase Garvin, 3B/RHP, Wilton, 2021
6-foot, 155-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.4 H-1B time. Tall stance, easier load with clean swing path, stiffness in legs in swing, pull approach, line drive and ground ball contact, 81 mph exit velocity. Tends to move flat-footed, avg. hands and feet, needs improvement fielding in rhythm and creating direction to target, accurate to bag, 70 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; rolls into crouched balance point, lands inline on stiff front leg, short arm action, some extension to plate. Fastball was 69-72 mph and straight. Avg. spin and shape on 11/5 breaking ball. Changeup is thrown with stiff wrist creating floating flat action to plate.

Preston Gill, RHP/3B, OABCIG, 2021
6-foot-1, 145-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; short turn into balance point, stab down and works up and over front side, lands slightly across body with avg. use of lower half in delivery. Fastball was 69-70 mph, downhill plane, with varying action to plate. Wobbly shape on 11/5 breaking ball. Changeup is currently flat and straight. 5.18 H-1B time. Square stance, body load, flat swing plane, stiffer finish through contact, ground balls off bat, pull approach, 74 mph exit velocity. Solid footwork in field, hands can be hard at times, one piece arm action, avg. carry and accuracy to bag, 69 mph arm strength across infield.

Anthony Hacker, RHP/2B, Sioux City East, 2020
5-foot-8, 145-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; medium balance point, athletic ¾ arm action, collapses down mound flattening out fastball. 68-70 mph with slight running action. Slower curveball with loopy break to plate. Slight cut action on changeup; thrown with stiff arm action. 4.95 H-1B time. Narrow stance, works uphill, hitchy load, inconsistent contact, 79 mph exit velocity. Solid athlete in field, quick release, tends to stop to field, accurate to bag, occasional actions in field, 70 mph arm strength across infield.

Elliott Hackett, SS/RHP, Sioux Falls (SD), 2020
6-foot-1, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.6 H-1B time. Athletic stance, double tap trigger, bigger movements, effects timing, shows line drive pop in bat, solid contact to middle of field, 74 mph exit velocity. Works through ball, has athleticism, tall fielding position, playable arm with accuracy to bag, 74 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; body body control to balance, inconsistent front leg, short arm action, show ability to drive ball downhill. Fastball was straight, for strikes, at 76-79 mph. Throws sharper 11/5 breaking ball with late depth.

Blaine Harpenau, RHP/SS, Remsen St. Mary’s, 2021
5-foot-11, 145-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Rocker step into uptempo delivery, high tuck and turn balance point, long arm swing with hand quickness out front. Produces 81-83 mph fastballs for strikes with varying movement. Avg. shape and spin on breaking ball. Has athleticism and quick twitch action on mound; strong follow in class. 4.3 H-1B time. Open stance, balanced swing, solid bat speed and athletic in box, some pop in bat, hard line drive contact, works mid/pull side of field, 84 mph exit velocity. Avg. footwork with sure hands, works through baseball, avg. rhythm while fielding, arm plays well across with carry and accuracy to bag, 78 mph arm strength across infield.

Ever Jens, RHP/OF, Davenport Central, 2020
5-foot-11, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; sideways rocker step into higher semi-athletic balance point, knee and front foot far outside body, mostly in-line but lands with open front foot to plate. Slight pauses in arm action on back-side but is clean and quick out front. Fastball was 77-81 mph, delivered on slight downhill plane, with occasional slight life. Slower looping breaking ball at 60-64 mph and better 70-71 mph slider with sharp break. Changeup has solid fade in bottom of zone. 4.5 H-1B time. Square stance, leg kick trigger, crouches into hitting slot changing eye levels, flat swing plane, avg. rhythm, solid line drive contact to mid/oppo side of field, 79 mph exit velocity. Works through baseball, longer arm action, elevated throws to target, avg. quickness and range, 80 mph arm strength from outfield.

Carter Junge, 1B/RHP, Sioux City East, 2020
6-foot-1, 225-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.9 H-1B time. Spread stance, front heel turn trigger, clean path, fly ball hitter, strength is to middle of field, 70 mph exit velocity. Sure hands, avg. arm across, solid around bag receiving throws, 70 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; short stride landing across body. Slight cutting action on 65-69 mph fastball. Breaking ball was 56-59 mph and changeup was 56-57 mph.

Ty Langenberg, RHP, Urbandale, 2020
6-foot-2, 170-pound right-handed pitcher. Lean athletic frame. Rocker step into higher controlled balance point, long arm swing, clean arm action and drives baseball downhill. Fastball was 85-88 mph with mostly straight action to plate. Threw above avg. slider with tight spin and late 2/8 break. Solid running action on changeup. Overall solid command with 3 pitches, is athletic with clean arm action, and projects to continue to add velocity.

Tucker Langenberg, RHP, Urbandale, 2021
6-foot, 170-pound right-handed pitcher. Lean frame. Rocker step into higher balance point, short bow and arrow arm action, has extension and finish to plate. Fastball was 78-81 mph with slight running action to plate. Loose spin on 11/5 breaking ball with avg. velocity. Throws above avg. changeup with rotation, fade and sink in bottom of zone.

Hunter Lockhart, 3B/RHP, Clinton, 2021
5-foot-8, 130-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.7 H-1B time. Upright stance, arm bar load, avg. use of lower half, pull approach, ground ball contact, 68 mph exit velocity. Works around and through baseball, avg. hands and feet, lower arm slot, sinking action on throws to bag, 70 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; rocker step into medium balance point, collapses down mound, short arm path and releases from ¾ slot. Slight run on fastball at 68-71 mph. Slow rolling break on curveball at 63-64 mph. Cut action on changeup.

Brayden Lodge, RHP/3B, Camanche, 2021
6-foot-1, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; short tuck and turn at balance point, short arm action, ¾ slot. Fastball was 72-75 mph, touching 76, with solid command to glove side of plate. Tends to fly open on breaking ball effecting shape and break. Pushes changeup with elbow creating flat action. 4.7 H-1B. Balanced swing, shows rhythm in load, tends to roll-over to pull side, best contact to mid/oppo side with line drive contact, 82 mph exit velocity. Clean arm action, plays well across infield, tends to stop to field, sure hands, avg. overall actions with decent athleticism, 77 mph arm strength across infield.

Jake Matthaidess, LHP/OF, North Scott, 2020
6-foot, 170-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; simple rocker step into high athletic balance point, long clean arm action traveling on sideways path, shows extension to plate. Fastball was 78-80 mph with easy effort; consistent strike thrower and was as high as mid 80’s over the summer. 1/7 breaking ball has avg./ok break and shape for strikes. 4.68 H-1B time. Square stance, easy leg kick trigger, balanced in box, clean line drive swing plane, has extension through contact, pull approach, 86 mph exit velocity. Easy actions with sure hands in field, avg. motor and quickness, works through ball, has carry and accuracy on throws, 85 mph arm strength from outfield. Follow as 2-way player and projects on mound.

Nolan McLean, RHP, Anamosa, 2021
6-foot-2, 185-pound right-handed pitcher. Good physicality for age. Rocker step into athletic balance point, leans back at top, slight pie arm slot. Fastball was 79-80 mph with flashes of late running action. Above avg. run and fade on changeup for strikes. Was inconsistent with breaking ball in this outing.

Alex Meister, RHP, Iowa City Regina, 2020
6-foot-2, 140-pound right-handed pitcher. Medium balance point, short arm action from OT slot, limited use of lower half, slight downhill plane on straight fastball at 75-78 mph; touching 79 mph. Avg. feel for slider at 67-69. Solid fade and action on changeup; thrown at 69-71 mph.

Jackson Nove, LHP, Cedar Rapids Prairie, 2021
6-foot-4, 180-pound left-handed pitcher. Longer projectable frame on mound. Athletic high knee balance point. Long arm swing with quickness out front. Fastball was 80-83 mph with later arm side running action away from RHH. Throws avg. 1/7 breaking ball for strikes; solid shape and can be used to pitch hitter backwards. Slight arm-side run on changeup. Projects well physically, is left-handed, arm works well, and should continue to progress and make quality strides on mound.

Dylan Page, C/RHP, Linn-Mar, 2021
6-foot-1, 195-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.5 H-1B time. Large frame with present strength, choppy knee to knee trigger, short to baseball, solid contact, pull approach, flashes pop in bat, would benefit from greater extension through baseball, 82 mph exit velocity. Solid footwork, strength in hands to stick pitches in zone, avg. blocking ability, 64 mph arms strength with 2.4-2.5 pop times. On mound; short arm action producing 70-72 mph fastballs with straight action to plate. Early break on curveball with 11/5 shape.

Alec Patino, 3B/RHP, Sioux City East, 2020
5-foot-11, 175-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.5 H-1B time. Body load with easy rhythm in hands, gap to gap hitter, routinely squares baseball with authority, consistent at plate, and is one of better bats in Iowa 2020 class, 90 mph exit velocity. Works low to ground, light on his feet, sure hands, athletic actions, follows throws across infield, 82 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; short arm action with quickness and extension out front. Fastball has solid life at 77-79 mph and throws above avg. breaking ball with tight spin, shape, and has ability to throw for strikes consistently.

Chayce Patterson, 2B/RHP, Sioux City East, 2020
6-foot-1, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.7 H-1B time. Tall stance, balanced swing, quick hands to contact, live drive approach, ball jumps off bat, clean path and projects offensively, 82 mph exit velocity. Fields on heels, sure hands, some rawness mechanically, choppy arm action, avg. carry and accuracy to bag, 72 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; short rocker step into medium balance point, long clean arm action, lands inline to plate with solid extension. Fastball was 70-74 mph with run and sink action. 11/5 breaking ball tends to back up and lacks break. Cutting action on changeup to glove side of plate.

Casey Perrenoud, RHP, Western Dubuque, 2020
6-foot-1, 155-pound right-handed pitcher. Lean athletic frame. Higher tuck and turn balance point. Long arm swing, wraps behind body hiding baseball, and is clean out front with above avg. extension to plate. Delivers from lower ¾ slot creating late run and sink on fastball at 80-82 mph. Tight spin on 11/5 slider, has above avg. shape and depth, with occasional sweeping break to plate. Good arm action with solid fade and sink on changeup in bottom of zone. Tough on hitters and is a follow in 2020 class.

Bryce Phelps, 3B/RHP, Denver, 2021
6-foot-2, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.65 H-1B time. Long athletic frame that should continue to fill out. Body load, stays short to contact, produces above avg. bat speed and has present pop in bat, drives ball with lift through contact, projects well offensively, 95 mph exit velocity. Athletic in field, active feet, soft glove with footwork, moves well laterally, quick release with carry and accuracy to bag, has actions in field, 81 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; good body control into crouched balance point, tends to leak away from rubber early, head whack to clear arm path from OT slot, some effort delivery. Fastball was 77-80 mph with varying action to plate. Throws tighter breaking ball with 11/5 shape. 2 pitch strike thrower and is athletic on mound. Strong follow in IA 2021 class.

Brock Reade, LHP/OF, Clear Creek Amana, 2021
5-foot-11, 140-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Longer rocker step into short balance point, pause on back side of arm action, short arm action from ¾ slot, good extension out front with clean release. Fastball was 72-74 mph with varying action to plate. Shows avg./solid break and shape on 1/7 curveball. Changeup is firm and flat with occasional running action. 4.59 H-1B time. Wider stance, short stride, choppy rhythm, line drive and ground ball contact, some extension through baseball, soft oppo contact, pull approach, 78 mph exit velocity. Avg. actions in field, stops to field, uses two hands, loses momentum, solid arm action, accurate to target, 74 mph arm strength from outfield.

Bryce Rinderknecht, RHP, Ankeny, 2020
6-foot, 205-pound right-handed pitcher. Gathers over rubber, front shoulder tip, works up and over front side, compact arm action. Fastball was 75-78 mph, cutting action, delivered with effort to plate. Small shape and break on curveball and gained feel throughout inning. Shows good run and sink action on changeup; thrown at fastball arm speed.

Payton Schauf, RHP/1B, Sigourney, 2020
6-foot-1, 235-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Medium balance point, pie arm action, upright on release. Fastball was 78-79 mph, works downhill, with occasional run and sink. Breaking ball tends to hang and back up on RHH. 4.6 H-1B time. Square stance, easy rhythm in hands, limited use of lower half, shows above avg. pop in bat, drives ball to gaps well, 85 mph exit velocity. Avg. hands and feet, makes routine plays, stiffer arm action, solid/avg. around bag, 80 mph arm across infield.

Keian Secrist, SS/OF/RHP, Iowa City Liberty, 2021
6-foot, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.1 H-1B time. Wide stance, knee to knee trigger, quick hands at plate, uphill path, looks to elevate, flashes pull side pop in bat, 90 mph exit velocity. Works around and through baseball, solid hands and feet, late glove presentation occasionally, moves well with fluid athletic actions, 81 mph arm across infield.
