New England Inside the Recruitment:  Chris Winkel, 1B

Chris WinkelChris Winkel, 1B, Amity HS, 2016

PBR: Why did you choose UConn?
Winkel: I chose UConn because it has a great baseball program, is in the Northeast, and is a place I see my game excelling to the next level at.  I feel I really connected with the UConn coaches and share the same goals with them both athletically and academically.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?
Winkel: I was considering St. Johns, Bryant, and Boston College.

PBR:  Where did the coaches first see you compete and how did your relationship develop with the rest of the coaching staff?
Winkel: I think they first saw me play during Amity's state tournament run during my sophomore year. From, there, we started to stay in close contact.

PBR: What role does the coaching staff expect you to play during your first year on campus?
Winkel: They expect me to be able to contribute right away, whether it be at first base or in the outfield.

PBR: How excited were you to have your commitment out of the way?
Winkel: I was really excited. Now that it is over with, I am able to focus more on developing my game so I am ready to make an impact in college.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?
Winkel: My father. From advice to BP and fielding work, he's always there to help me out.

PBR: Who do you play for in the summer and what was your most exciting experience playing summer ball?
Winkel: During the summer I play for Orange Legion Post 127. But my most exciting memory was definitely going out to California and playing in the Area Code Games.

PBR: What were your stats last season?
Winkel: I batted .394 with 3HRs, 11 doubles, 41 hits,  21 RBIs, 30 runs, 13 stolen bases.

PBR: Who is the toughest pitcher you have faced in CT?
Winkel: Mike Cowell. He's a smart pitcher with good velo and off-speed.

PBR: Thoughts on this upcoming season?
Winkel: Amity is coming back this season strong as ever. Should be a great spring.
