Drew Holweger, LHP, Springboro HS, Class of 2016

PBR: Why did you choose Furman?

Holweger: I chose Furman for three main reasons: the coaching staff, the outstanding academic programs, and the campus is the nicest I have ever been on. The fact that I also enjoy fishing and spending time outside didn't hurt either. Plus, my grandparents live about 50 miles away so it will be great for them to get a chance to catch a lot of games.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Holweger: I was considering Miami and Xavier for baseball, and Nova Southeastern for basketball.

PBR: How much did playing down south play a part in your decision?

Holweger: As a pitcher it is definitely nice to play in the warm weather year-round, and I am excited about that. However, that was not the main reason I chose to go to Furman. I knew it was a great school, and after touring the campus, I was hooked. After getting to know the coaches, and when things fell into place, committing to Furman was an easy choice even though the other schools I was considering would have been great places too.

PBR: How does it feel to be a part of a Division1 baseball program?

Holweger: I am very excited to be a part of the Furman Baseball Family. It really hasn't set in yet, but I am sure that it will when we start out fall program next year. I am really looking forward to my Senior Basketball and Baseball seasons at Springboro High School. I have great teammates, and coaches in both sports, and I think that we will have great seasons.

PBR: Who do you play for in the summer and what was the most memorable experience from this summer?

Holweger: I played for the Midwest Nationals this summer, and I enjoyed competing with my friends and teammates.

PBR:  What person has the greatest impact on your baseball career and why?

Holweger: There are two people who have influenced my baseball career since I started playing--my dad and Coach Chris Cunningham. Each taught me the proper way to play. They showed me how hard work leads to success. They each kept things simple, and spent time with me so that I could develop the correct muscle memory needed to be successful. In high school, I have been fortunate enough to play for a Hall of Fame coach, Mark Pelfrey. Coach Schmitt, Coach Howard, and Coach Davis have taught me a lot too.

PBR: What were your stats this spring season?

Holweger: I hit .333 for the season, and started at first base. I had a .985 fielding percentage, and only pitched two innings during my high school season since I was building my arm strength back up.

Thank you, I appreciate everything PBR did to help make this dream possible.
