JFG Trials - Underclassmen Analysis

Jackson King C / LHP / North Central, SC / 2024

The slender OF/LHP showed off a basic skillset with some upside. He will need to mature physically for his tools to translate. The slightly open stance sets his hands just off the back shoulder and then loads them down and back with a moderately high leg kick that lands closed. The barrel turns onto plane and attacks the ball with a positive angle creating lift through contact. Will be worth following up on as he gets stronger. Worked through the ball in the OF with a quick pro step to a high 3/4 release that faded the ball to the arm side and limited carry. Should improve with added arm strength. (OF Velo 64) On the mound worked with a high 3/4 arm slot that matched his OF arm slot and inconsistent release point with limited extension. FB was 60-62 with arm side run and CB was 54-55 with 1/7 shape and inconsistent feel.

Jack Tomas SS / RHP / Bishop England, SC / 2023

Slight frame with proportional build to develop. Young prospect who's growth will impact the upside. Simple stance with the feet just outside the shoulders and the hands set just off the off the back shoulder. Medium leg kick that lands at parallel and drives the hands back, ending up outside the stance at foot strike. Flatter bat path that showed inside-out tendencies spraying line drives up the middle and to the opposite field. Choppy actions in the infield with abbreviated follow through made it tough to carry throws from the left side of the infield. On the mound,. worked to balance point at the belt and a H3Q  to OTT arm slot. Big 11/5 breaking ball should tighten up as the arm gets quicker.

Landan Anderson SS / OF / North Central , SC / 2024

2024 prospect with some strength present that gives him some physical upside. A little stiff at the plate with his actions. Triggers the swing with a high leg kick that lands violently at times. Muscles the barrel through the zone with a flat path that produced low line drives during his BP round. Disconnect between the upper and lower halves made it tough for him to consistently be on time at contact. Works low through ground balls with good present footwork. Added arm strength will help carry throws accurately to first. Utility player work in the OF as well and showed enough athleticism to make that a future home if need be. Shorter arm stroke from the mound produced a FB at 62 and a  breaking ball at 52. Inconsistent with his foot strike produced mix results with his location.

Jesse Bowers SS / C / North Central, SC / 2023

Physical athlete with a high waist and moderately strong frame. An open, slightly crouched stance at the plate leads to a controlled knee to knee load. Rushed through the lower half at times and struggled to consistently get the barrel to contact point. Hands load down and back and attack the zone from a lower slot. The ball comes off the bat with pop at times and could translate into potential plus power as he matures. (78 mph exit velo) Utility man worked as both an infielder and outfielder and showed a nice arm for his age with throws that carried to the target at 70 mph. Footwork is short and choppy at times but should smooth out as he matures. FB 68-69 topping at 70 on the mound with erratic command at times.

Mikah Conner SS / RHP / Westwood, SC / 2023

Lean athletic build with room to fill out and add additional strength. Showed some quick twitch ability with a well rounded set of tools. Stance outside the shoulders with a toe tap timing mechanism. Slight load to the bat head and whip release through contact with natural loft. Developing power should continue to trend up. 77 mph EV. Raw infield ability with smooth natural actions and quick hands. Carried throws across the infield accurately at 76 mph. Evolving tools could give him a high ceiling and low floor.

Jordan Gibbs SS / RHP / Brookland-Cayce, SC / 2023

5 foot 11 youthful prospect with slender build and lengthy limbs. Starts with a  tall open stance and deep hand set. Loads with a knee to knee timing mechanism and moderate stride. Negative attack angle put the barrel into and out of the zone quickly. Stop and start footwork in the infield with quick hands. Whipped the ball across the infield from a L3Q arm slot (66 infield Velo) Arm slot mirrors the infield slot from the mound with a floating L3Q to 3Q. FB Velo 65-67 with feel for a 63 mph CH.

Macon Leppert RHP / C / Blythewood, SC / 2024

Compact proportional catchers build with future developmental potential. Fundamental skillset with loose actions. Open stance with a relaxed pre pitch rhythm. Lofted bat path creates lift to the pull side with a chance for future power to develop. Consistent with his timing and barrel contact. Catchers set up will improve as he gets stronger, quick hands on exchanges. Arm strength and additional follow through will help carry throws to the bag. FB 69-70 from an OTT arm slot on the mound and a downer curveball at 58 with plus potential as he gets older.

Jacob Pettit 1B / OF / Nations Ford , SC / 2025

Proportional athlete with trends towards plus power for his age. Simple balanced set up at the plate with the hands set just off the shoulder. A quiet load that turns the barrel slightly at foot strike. Lofted bat path produced a 73 mph exit velocity and clean barrel contact from gap to gap. Advanced hit tool at this age. Quiet hands and confident actions in the infield. High ceiling with additional development.
