No. 6 Jasper Rolls to State Finals

By Blake Hibler
Director of Scouting, PBR Indiana

JASPER---The game was never in doubt. Jasper started hot and never looked back against Crawfordsville. Spencer Otto was the hero early driving in 4 of the first 5 runs for the Wildcats.

Otto drove a ball off the top of the fence in right field, to score Andy Knust for the first run of the game in the top of the second.

Otto delivered the biggest blow in the third inning when with two outs he drove a fastball over the left field fence for a three run homerun and essentially ended the game.

Jasper’s pitcher Nick Gobert was almost perfect through three innings. The only runner to reach base was on a first inning error. Gobert is not necessarily overpowering, sitting 82-84, but he pitches and is typically always ahead in the count, allowing him to keep hitters off balance and guessing.

Gobert finished the day working 5 innings, allowing three hits and only one run before turning the ball over to Mark Giesler to finish off the game in the sixth.

To fully understand the dominance we turn to the numbers.  Jasper scored 11 runs on double digit hits. Every starter had a base hit. They drew 9 walks and stole 10 bases. The final score was 11-1 after six innings. Jasper has outscored opponents 56-7 in this year’s state championship run.

Jasper will play Friday night at Victory Field at 7:30 vs. Norwell.  Jasper will go after their 6th state title and will play the school they defeated in 2006 for their last state title, Norwell.  In 2006 they beat Norwell 13-12.
