2023 Spring Team Preview: Londonderry

LONDONDERRY, N.H. - An experienced team with three senior pitchers back has Londonderry ready to take it one step further in 2023 after losing to Pinkerton in last year’s state championship game.

“How well our offense comes around will be the key,” explained Londonderry head coach Brent Demas. “Execution of fundamentals will be important.”

The coach of the Lancers since 2003, Demas has confidence that pitching will be strong in the upcoming campaign.

“We have deep pitching,” Demas related. “We have three seniors that all have extensive playoff experience. All three had at least five wins last year.”

Connor Fennell, Michael Crowley and Kevin Rourke are being counted on to lead the staff this season for a program that has won four state titles in the time Demas has been head coach, the last championship coming in 2019.

Crowley is a southpaw committed to Assumption while Fennell and Rourke are right-handers, Rourke a UMass Lowell signee.

Jonathan Wilson, the 17th-rated junior left-handed pitcher in New England, adds depth along with fellow 11th graders Joey Cafaro and Ryan Williams as well as sophomore Brady Gillis.

There is more than pitching, however, that stands out to Demas.

“The overall depth of the team is definitely a strength,” the Londonderry mentor said. “Most of last year’s team is back. We only lost two starters.”

Those were outfielders from a 17-7 squad, with Brett McKinnon the lone returnee. Seniors Colin Parent and Liam Stott are others projected to see time in the outfield as well as Wilson.

In contrast to the outfield, the infield is experienced starting at catcher with Drew Heenan returning along with backups Stott and Jet Jones, the second-rated sophomore catcher in New England.

Junior Owen Carey is back to play first base with senior Brady Anderson returning at second. A pair of juniors will be on the other side of the infield with Jayden Hamilton at shortstop and Johan Pena the third baseman.

“These guys are hard workers, but they also have fun,” Demas said. “It’s a fun group to coach and be around. This offseason they really worked on base running and you can see the difference. Hitting-wise, the bats need to warm up.”

Demas is of the belief this year’s Lancer squad can live up to the past success.

“We pride ourselves with hard work, playing the game the right way and having respect,” Demas concluded.
