Longhorn Scout Day - Quick Hits

Buddy Gouldsmith
Nevada Scouting Director

NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV – The Legacy Longhorns wrapped up their fall on Saturday, December 8th with their inaugural PBR Scout Day.  Southern Nevada experienced back to back days of rain, Thursday and Friday, but the sky opened up and the sun was out with PBR Nevada in town.  A beautiful day but keep in mind the 60 track was a touch “spongy”. Over the next several days, we will take a look at some of the stat leaders but first, let’s take a peek at a few performers from yesterday.

2019

RHP, Logan Berrier, Lean, 6-foot, 145, Berrier has an athletic build with room to add weight and strength.  He has a loose quick arm, throwing from a ¾ slot.  His fastball ranged 80-82 and is easy to see him being better than that.  He showed feel for a slurvy breaking ball, throwing the slider and curveball.  He has a firm and sinking changeup.  Berrier has solid infield actions with plenty of arm strength to stay at the position.  In the box, he displays some quickness and feel for the barrel. Lower half adjustments and swing plane management are pertinent for his future as a position player.  With work, his future could very well be on the mound.  Berrier could be a great fit for a school looking to play the long game.

RHP, Zachary Chin, Stocky, 5-foot-8, 155, Chin has a sturdy frame with present strength.  Chin throws out of a ¾ arm slot with accuracy. He made solid throws from the outfield, but his arm strength was most intriguing on the mound. He was 80-82 on the mound with occasional arm side run.  Chin maintained feel for a breaking ball and a changeup. He filled up the strike zone with all 3 pitches.

2020

CF, Zachary Ahmed, A Slim, 5-foot-11, 145, Ahmed has an athletic frame with room to add weight and strength.  He is spry with a lot of spring in his step. He has a chance to be a superior defender and can really run them down in the outfield. Ahmed has a quick bat, with a backside driven swing and uphill plane.  There is solid barrel feel and his event best 6.82 60-yard speed, plays well out of the box.  With adjustments, Ahmed has a chance to be a top of the order type bat.

C, Fabian Torres, 6-foot, 180, Torres has a sturdy frame with durability for the position. He received well and showed instincts to block.  He has a solid catch and release, posting a day’s best 1.86 pop time. At the plate, he displays a manageable length to his swing with strength in his barrel.  Torres has a chance to show power down the road.  He showed capable actions in the infield with some low-end value as a backup with the athleticism to play a corner infield position for depth. His future is behind the plate and with plenty of time to continue to develop should be a follow for anyone with catching needs.

2021

SS, RHP Brandon Carter, 5-foot-11, 145, Carter has a projectable frame with a youthful athleticism.  Weight and strength gains will be imperative to his progress.  He showed capable infield actions with solid footwork and exchange.  His throws were on target.  At the plate, weight and strength should provide some swing stabilization and consistency.

3B, Aaron Lopez, Compact, 5-foo-4, 160, Lopez is stocky with present strength.  He has good infield actions with playable arm strength. In the box, he shows a solid combination of strength and bat speed.  Lopez posted an event best, 85 mph exit velocity with the ball jumping off his bat. Lopez reminds me of 2000 Silverado State Champion, Ryan Ruiz.  Like Ruiz, Lopez could fit as an offensive second baseman at the next level.

2022

RHP, DeJon Mitchell, Long-levered, 5-foot-7, 125, Mitchell has a high waisted athletic frame.  With long arms and big hands, Mitchell has loose, quick arm from a high ¾ slot.  Just a freshman, he posted an event best 83 Max Fastball.  He showed a feel for spin in a 68-69 breaking ball with occasional depth. He has limited feel for a changeup but his youthful athleticism is easily projectable.  Look for Mitchell to be a factor on the mound at the next level.

SS, Richard Leon Lopez, developing 5-foot-4, 115, Lopez has a lean, athletic frame with plenty of room for growth.  He has good infield actions with solid footwork and a quick exchange.  He plays a developing arm strength well on throws from multiple angles with a good internal clock.  At the plate, he shows good weight transfer and solid bat plane in a present line drive approach.  Strength gains will only add to this presently capable player.  Lopez has a chance to be a special defender down the road and solid bat handler.
