MLB Draft League: 47 Players Selected in 2022 MLB Draft

Mike Rosenbaum
Senior Prospect Analyst

The MLB Draft League had 47 players selected in the 2022 MLB Draft, surpassing the 39-pick total from the Draft League's inaugural season while raising the Draft League's two-year tally to 86 total Draft picks. The three-day event ended with a flourish Tuesday, with Rounds 11-20 yielding 37 Draft League selections.

The first two Draft League players to come off the board this year did so three picks apart, and, in total, there were 13 instances when multiple Draft Leaguers were taken within a six-pick span. That includes the 12th, 16th and 17th rounds when the Draft League had three players selected within a four-pick stretch. The Draft League also had players taken with consecutive picks on six different occasions.

For a second straight year, the Draft League’s two highest picks (current-season players only) came from the high school ranks in SS Nate Ochoa (No. 171), the Nationals’ sixth-round pick, and Mets seventh-rounder RHP Jonah Tong (No. 209). Overall, three Draft League preps were chosen in the ‘22 Draft.

Fourteen Draft League alumni from the inaugural ‘21 season had their names called during the ‘22 Draft, including four Day 2 (Rounds 3-10) picks. SS Jorel Ortega (No. 174) and RHP J.P. Massey (No. 200) were the Draft League’s second- and third-highest overall picks, while OF Nate Church’s selection in the 11th round highlighted the Draft League’s deep Day 3 alumni contingent.

Collegiate players once again accounted for most of the Draft League’s picks: more than 72 percent of the league’s draftees were Divisions I-II products, with another 19 percent coming from the Junior College ranks. Positionally, the Draft League had 32 pitchers drafted compared to 15 hitters.

State College and Trenton led the six Draft League affiliates with 10 Draft picks each, followed closely by West Virginia (9) and Frederick (8). Williamsport and Mahoning Valley produced a combined 10 picks.

National League East teams feasted on Draft League talent this year, as the Mets (4 picks), Phillies (4), Braves (3), Nationals (1) and Marlins (1) accounted for 27.7 percent of the Draft League’s 2022 selections. In addition, the A’s, Pirates, Rockies and Cardinals all selected three Draft Leaguers, while the Cubs, Rays, Reds, Mariners, Tigers, Angels and Twins drafted two each.

Altogether, 24 different MLB organizations tapped into the Draft League talent pool in the '22 Draft.
