MOKAN Preseason All-State Showcase: Pitcher Analysis

On Saturday, February 29, Prep Baseball Report - Missouri/Kansas held the MOKAN Preseason All State Showcase event at the Urban Youth Academy in Kansas City. Roughly 60 of some of the top prospects in the state were in attendance, representing the 2021-to-2022 classes.
Shortly after the event’s conclusion we published an instant analysis story, highlighting the top statistical performers from the event. We jump-started our position-by-position breakdown last week, already highlighting the catchers, outfielders, and infielders. Today marks the conclusion of our position specific breakdowns with arguably the most talented group in attendance: the pitchers.
A large chunk of our top performers hail from Missouri’s 2021 class: Wyatt Clark (2021; Blue Springs South), Matthew Haley (2021; Rockwood Summit), Landen Johnson (2021; Westminster Christian Academy), and Luke Quackenbush (2021; Kickapoo). All four remain uncommitted and here are some quick thoughts on each of them, respectively:
*Clark worked out in the infield as well, but his upside comes on the bump, where his physical 6-foot-5 frame plays up. He pounds the lower half of the zone with his fastball and compliments that with a potential swing-and-miss curveball. Clark is a high-follow in his class.
*Haley, like the aforementioned Clark, also worked out on the infield, but his upside comes on the mound. He has that “it” factor on the mound with a clear confidence to him that was evident just a few pitches into his bullpen. Pair that mentality with a quality pitch mix and Haley certainly has a bright future ahead of him.
*Standing at a well-proportioned 6-foot-4 and 207 pounds, Johnson has a durable build that will likely allow him to be a heavy use pen arm at the next level, if not a starter. There’s more velocity in the tank for Johnson and he has another level to reach before hitting his ceiling.
*A true athlete in every sense of the word, Quackenbush string together an impressive bullpen. The biggest takeaway was his ability to throw two distinct breaking balls for strikes, which will go a long way as his pitch mix continues to develop. He’s earned a spot on everyone’s prospect radar as a potential two-way talent.
Two uncommitted 2021s from Kansas showed well at this event: Chandler Miller (2021; Basehor-Linwood) and Tegan Cain (2021; Ellis). Cain worked well on the mound, maintaining a smooth rhythm throughout his delivery and staying in sync. His fastball sits in the mid-80s with heavy action and he showed feel for both of his off-speed pitches, including an impressive breaking ball.
With enormous upside on the bump, Miller was easily one of the more intriguing arms in attendance. His fastball touched 86 mph and he showed an advanced feel to spin while mixing in a changeup with natural sink, too. As he continues to fill out his wiry 6-foot-2, 165-pound frame, Miller will continue to see an uptick in his stuff. He’s an absolute must-follow in his class.
Rounding out this list are two Missouri sophomore’s with highly projectable frames that have clear upside on the mound: Garrett Ferguson (2022; Summit Christian Academy) and Karter Muck (2022; St. Pius X).
Ferguson’s advanced changeup caught our eye as an intriguing compliment to his low-80s fastball. Muck’s fastball sat in the low-80s with natural arm-side run. He complimented his heater by flipping in an impressive breaking ball, giving him a solid two-pitch mix moving forward. Both are high-follows in their class.

Brady Beverman, Olathe South (KS), 2021
Positional Profile: 3B One of the top-ranked prospects in his class.
Body: 6-foot-0, 200-pounds. Strong, well-proportioned build.
Defense: Strong base, fluid footwork, steady hands, confident defender.
Arm: RH. INF - 79 mph. Quick, loose arm action, high 3/4 slot.
Hit: RHH. Tall, slightly open setup, leg kick trigger leading to short stride. Loose, quick hands, short, level path to contact, consistent line drive contact, clear barrel feel.
Power: 85 mph exit velocity from the tee. Easily produces hard contact.
Run: 8.00 runner in the 60.
Delivery: Feet start narrow on rubber, tall/fall type delivery, strong front side, front toe lands slightly closed, upright finish, throws with little effort, rhythm throughout delivery.

Kade Biellier, Willard (MO), 2022
Positional Profile: LHP A top ranked prospect in his class.
Body: 5-foot-11, 165-pounds. Strong, muscular build.
Defense: Athletic fielding position, fluid outfield actions, quick feet.
Arm: LH. OF - 87 mph. Long arm action, high 3/4 slot; strong arm.
Hit: LHH. Balanced setup, smooth load, toe-tap trigger to short stride, hands remain in strong hitting position. Present bat speed, short, uphill path to the baseball, aggressive swing.
Power: 90 mph exit velocity from the tee. Consistently makes hard contact, present raw power.
Run: 7.50 runner in the 60.

Defense: Steady two-hand gather, quick double play turn, some accuracy on throws across the diamond.
