Mattawan Takes Down No. 5 Portage Central

Mattawan had something to prove coming into Tuesday night's contest against No. 5 Portage Central. Having not beaten their rivals in five years but having a great season up to this point, the Mattawan Wildcats were poised to make a statement.  And a statement they made by sweeping Portage Central.

Portage Central started Derek Schneider, a Western Michigan commit. Schneider was outstanding in Game 1, striking out 10.  But Mattawan junior D.J. Butler was on his game as well, limiting Portage Central to only four hits and no earned runs in a seven inning complete game effort.

Game two action saw the Portage Central offense explode only answered by Mattawan hitters.  Junior shortstop Nate Schneider did the early damage for Portage Central with a three run shot to centerfield. However Mattawan answered with homeruns from Trevor Fink, junior Brian Presley and senior Ryan Peninger. A strong pitching performance from Mattawan junior sidearmer Josh Schact led the way for the Wildcats.
