Class 2A Regional Championship Games

Coal City Sectional

Seneca Regional

Aurora Christian (26-8) blasted city-rival Aurora Central Catholic 11-1 in six innings. Eagle senior Josh Haugen had a huge day at the plate with three hits and four big RBI. University of Pennsylvania-bound Mitch Holtz (3-0) fired a three-hitter at the Chargers with seven strikeouts. The future Quaker added two hits and drove home an Eagle run.

Momence Regional

Herscher (30-7) defeated I-8 South rival Manteno 6-3 behind NIU-bound LHP Jordan Ruckman (6-1), who fired a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts at Manteno (28-8). Tiger Matt Webber had a big two-run double and Dalton Sproul drove home a pair for the I-8 South champions.

Chicago Christian Regional

Chicago Christian (25-12) defeated Team Englewood 30-0 in five-innings.

Wilmington Regional

Wilmington (18-14) slipped past I-8 South rival Reed-Custer 3-2. Reed Custer bows out at 11-27.

Immaculate Conception Regional

Immaculate Conception stunned Lisle 5-4 on Saturday. The Knights rallied past the Lions scoring two runs in the sixth and another run in the top of the seventh to grab a 5-2 lead. Lisle’s (31-6) seventh inning rally fell a run short.

Walther Lutheran Regional

Walther Lutheran routed Raudner 15-1 in five innings.

Gordon Tech

Gordon Tech (20-17) blanked Latin 7-0 behind a two-hitter from Ram ace Dakota Pisarek. Pisarek struck out nine Roman hitters.

Mt. Zion Regional

Mt. Zion (29-3) blanked Decatur St. Teresa 6-0. St. Teresa bows out at 24-5.

Flora Regional

Olney-East Richland (23-12) routed Mount Carmel (IL) 12-2 in six innings. Olney will meet Mount Zion in the first Robinson Sectional Semifinal at 4 on Wednesday. The PBR’s Drake Skleba will be in Robinson for all of the action.

Teutopolis Regional

Teutopolis (29-6) blanked Shelbyville 8-0 behind senior RHP Mark Niebrugge.

Harrisburg (29-8-1) blasted Vienna 8-0.

The Bulldogs will take on two-time defending Class 2A champion Teutopolis in a Class 2A Robinson sectional semifinal at 6:45 on Wednesday night. The PBR’s Drake Skleba will have complete coverage of the toughest sectional in Class 2A on Wednesday night in Robinson.

Anna-Jonesboro

Anna-Jonesboro (28-7) defeated Murphysboro 5-3 on Saturday. Murphysboro bows out at 26-10.

DuQuoin Regional

No. 17 Benton (31-6) slipped past SIRR rival Du Quoin 4-3 in eight thrilling innings. Ranger senior Trey Garrett improves to 7-1 on the season with a seven-hitter with nine strikeouts against DuQuoin (18-15). The three Indian runs were unearned.

Benton senior Ethan Hughes drove in a pair for the Ranger runs. Ethan Hughes and Nathaniel Higgins had the other Ranger RBI.

Richmond Burton Regional

Richmond Burton (25-9) blanked St. Ed’s 8-0 behind a four-hit 13 strikeout shutout from Rocket junior Ricky Blanton (8-3).

Class 3A/4A Regular Season

East Suburban Catholic

No. 22 Nazareth (25-8; 9-7) split a doubleheader with Carmel, winning the opener behind Dominick Purpura. Purpura fired a six-hitter at the Corsairs, who came back to win the nightcap in Mundelein.

Nonconference

No. 2 Joliet Catholic Academy (27-7-1) got ambushed by giant-killer Lincoln-Way East (19-12) on Saturday. The game went to the eight tied at 2 when the Griffins explode for five big runs and went on to stun the Hilltoppers 7-2. Griffin Bobby Kosola had a big two-run single in the eighth. Kevin Duffin blew the game open with his two-run triple.

No. 4 Lincoln-Way North (30-5) blasted Shepard 7-1 behind junior CF Corey Krupske. Krupske’s two-run double broke open the contest and led the Phoenix to their 30th win of 2012. Last season the Phoenix finished 31-4. 

NSC Champ No. 5 Mundelein (30-5) routed Highland Park 17-5 on Saturday. University of Louisville-bound LHP Ryan Borucki (4-0) picked up the win for the Mustangs. Senior Torr Randau went deep for Mundelein. 

No. 7 Maine South (29-4) routed St. Ignatius 12-4 as Hawk lefty Mike Virgilio (7-0) won again.

No. 10 Hinsdale South (28-5) fell to Downers Grove North 8-0 behind a no-hitter from Trojan Matt Underwood. Downers Grove North improves to 20-17.

Fox Valley Conference Valley Division champ No. 25 Crystal Lake South (26-9) slipped past Southwest Suburban Blue division co-champ Joliet West, 3-2 on a walk-off single from Gator Tyler Salm. Joliet West falls to 19-14. Tiger Matt Koran hit a pair of homers for West.

No. 12 Normal West beat No. 13 Oak Forest 3-1. (See Sean Duncan’s story) Reporters Note:  

Geneva (26-7) knocked off one of the top football programs in the state, Wheaton Warrenville South, by the football score of 17-10 on Saturday. Viking junior Jake Weede went deep with two Vikings aboard. Stetson-bound Matt Brandys had three hits to set a Geneva school record. The future Hatter has 52 in 2012. The previous record was 52.

Marist (24-11) slipped past Downers Grove South 5-4 behind a four RBI game from Redhawk senior SS Ryan Meyer.

McHenry (19-16) swept away MSL-champ Hersey (25-10) on Saturday.

The Warriors took the first contest 7-6 scoring five times in the bottom of the seveth to stun the Huskies. The Warriors took the night-cap in another great game winning 1-0.

SWSC-Blue co-champs Lockport (23-12) outslugged Benet Academy 11-7 as Porter juniors Derek Bangert and Ted Snidanko each plated a pair of Porter runs.

Lemont (22-8) smashed Stagg 11-1 behind three-RBI days for senior Jeff Worsech and Matt Kaminsky.
