The No. 7 Cosby Titans defeated the Matoaca Warriors on Wednesday by the score of 4-0. The game featured some of the top young talent in the Richmond area. Devin Miles, a Randolph Macon commit, got the start for Cosby, while 2020 Brandon Arrowood started for Matoaca.

Miles threw six strong innings, striking out ten, while only allowing three hits, and zero walks. Miles filled up the strike zone all night challenging hitters and allowing a solid defense behind him to work.

The scoring started in the top of the first when Zach Hoekstra scored with two outs on a throwing error by the shortstop. In the bottom half of the first Miles made quick work of the Warriors retiring the side and striking out two.

Things stayed quiet until 2019 Mason Maurer hit a RBI single up the middle with two outs in the top of third, scoring Randolph Macon commit Ethan Iannuzzi. That made the score 2-0 in favor of Cosby. Hits and runs were hard to come by until the 5th, as Arrowood and Miles battled pitch for pitch.

In the top of the 5th 2020 LaTroy Whitaker took over for Arrowood and the Warriors. After a leadoff walk Whitaker got a fielder's choice, but a wild pitch put Iannuzzi in scoring position for the Titans. On a two strike count 2019 Radford commit Hoekstra battled a changeup for a single through the right side to make it 3-0 Cosby. After two walks in the 6th Cosby's Bobby Ayscue scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0 for Cosby.

That was all the scoring on the night for either team as Whitaker worked a scoreless 7th and Andrew Weight, 2019 JMU commit, took over for Miles to close things out. Weight allowed a double to 2021 Tanner Clements and a walk, but the Warriors' efforts to start a rally were ended with a strikeout to put the Titans at 1-0 on the season with a 4-0 victory over Matoaca.

On the night, in addition to Devin Miles, the Titans were led by offensive contributions from Hoekstra and Maurer. Hoekstra was 2-for-4 with one run batted in and one run scored, while Maurer had one big two-out hit and one run batted in. 2019 Virginia Tech commit Cade Swisher had a loud double in the top of the 7th, which was the only extra base hit of the night for the Titans.

Offensively for the Warriors Tanner Clements led the way with two hits, including a deep double to right center in the 7th. Brandon Arrowood had a nice outing with four innings pitched, scattering four hits, striking out three, and only allowing one earned run. Whitaker threw three innings for the Warriors allowing two earned runs, on two hits, and three walks while striking out four.
