CHICAGO, IL – In the 4A Mount Carmel Regional Final, No. 3 seed Mount Carmel used two big innings to take down No. 6 seed Lyons Township by a score of 8-0.

Mount Carmel (27-10) got things going with an impressive opposite field home run, by sophomore outfielder Alek Thomas, with one out in the bottom of the third inning. Later in the inning, junior second baseman Zion Pettigrew, an Iowa commit, lined a single into center field, scoring A.J. Lewis and Jeremy Houston, giving the Caravan a 3-0 lead heading to the fourth inning.

The Caravan put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fourth inning. Seven hits, five RBI singles and a Thomas double led to a five run inning and an 8-0 lead for Mount Carmel.

Senior right-handed pitcher Connor Spear, was in total control from the get-go for the Caravan. The St. Joseph commit, only allowed one-hit in a complete game shutout. Spear dealt with four defensive miscues and three walks but always seemed to make the key pitch when he and the Caravan needed it.

Lyons Township (21-10) had bases loaded in the top of the fourth but were not able to push across any runs. The Lions also threatened in the sixth inning, with runners on second and third but Emilio Guitron’s line drive hit the runner, running from second to third, to end the inning.

With the win, Mount Carmel advances to the St. Rita Sectional Semifinal and will face St. Laurence on Thursday, June 2nd at 4:30 pm.
