NYS Games: Team Nine and Ten Player Analysis

The dust has finally settled on the 2017 NYS Games. Over 230 players traveled and competed in Binghamton, NY in front of over 80 college coaches, eight professional scouts, and our entire PBR scouting staff - including the President of the National PBR brand, Sean Duncan. Team Nine and Ten reports are in the books, let's take a look the player analysis reports.

 

Team 9

Vincent Pecora, C (2018/Seaford) Solidly-built 5-foot-9, 165-pound catcher, ran an impressive 6.7/60. Offensively - short to the ball, keeps hands inside ball and uses all fields, makes consistent barrel contact, keeps bat on level path with full extension after contact and an exit velocity of 82 MPH, repeatable motion, some evidence of counter rotation between upper and lower torso, further lower body engagement will add to power. Defensively - fundamentally sound, stays low through the receiving process, quick transfer to throwing hand with a velocity of 77 MPH and POP time of 2.03-2.13, comfortable in blocking stance, agile movements.

Jarrett Odorisi, OF (2018/McQuaid) Speedy 5-foot-8, 155-pound outfielder, ran a 6.82/60. Offensively - effective load, appropriate pre-pitch movement, compact swing with consistent barrel contact, brings bat through strike zone on level path with full extension and exit velocity of 79 MPH, repeatable motion, comfortable driving middle third of the field, uses inner knee rotation to engage hips, developing counter rotation between upper and lower half will increase power. Defensively - economical footwork, agile, gathers body well behind ball, little to no crow hop used, accurate arm with an outfield velocity of 80 MPH

Ethan Sarmiento, 3B (2019/Harvey School) Athletic 6-foot-1, 190-pound third baseman, ran a 7.08/60. Offensively - effective load, short to the ball with strong hands, keeps bat on level path through strike zone with full extension for an exit velocity of 84 MPH - up 5 MPH from February; repeatable, comfortable driving ball to middle third of the field, further lower body engagement will add to power. Defensively - clean footwork, sure hands, smooth and easy transfer with an accurate arm at 73 MPH

Evan Bowers, OF (2018/Burnt Hills/Ballston Lake) Solid 5-foot-6, 160-pound outfielder, ran a 7.14/60 - has a personal best of 6.87/60. Offensively - quick to the ball, keeps bat on level path with slight downward incline, makes consistent barrel contact with an exit velocity of 81 MPH; repeatable motion, drives ball to middle third, inner knee rotation engages lower half. Defensively - takes direct path to ball, gathers body behind ball to gain momentum, smooth and easy transfer, accurate arm at 75 MPH

Marc Birbiglia, OF/LHP (2018/Smithtown East) Slender 5-foot-10, 150-pound LHP, ran a 7.26/60. Offensively - out of a nearly upright stance, keeps bat on level path through the strike zone with a repeatable motion, full extension after contact with an exit velocity of 77 MPH; further lower body engagement will add to power. Defensively - clean footwork, sure hands, smooth and easy transfer with an accurate arm at 81 MPH. Pitching - clean arm action out of a ¾ slot, evidence of hip tilt at balance point, more deliberate delivery will will add to velocity on fastball at 75 MPH, shows 11-to-5 shape on curveball.

Nicholas Jaskolski, OF/RHP (2018/Chaminade) Athletic 6-foot-1, 185-pound RHP, ran a 7.3/60. Pitching - short-arm action, ball jumps out of low ¾ slot, late movement on fastball at 80-82 MPH, throws 2-to-7 curveball at 67-69 MPH on both sides of the plate, consistently induces weak contact, effectively changes eye level. Offensively - short to the ball, keeps bat on level path through strike zone, full extension with an exit velocity of 86 MPH; repeatable motion, further lower body engagement will increase power. Defensively - quick, agile movements, confident and poised, sure hands, smooth and easy transfer, accurate arm at 81 MPH.

Manuel Cooper, Jr. RHP (2018/Whitesboro) Slight 5-foot-, 150-pound RHP, ran a 7.39/60. Pitching - quick arm action of a ¾ slot, arm-side run on 75-76 MPH fastball that touched 77 MPH, effectively changes eye and works both sides of the plate, hard bite on slider at 65-67 MPH. Offensively - effective load, appropriate pre-pitch movement, keeps bat on level path through strike zone, comfortable driving ball to middle third, extends after contact with slight upper cut with exit velocity of 80 MPH, lower body engagement will add power. 

Daniel Owen, OF/RHP (2018/New Hartford) Lanky 6-foot-1, 170-pound RHP, ran a 7.42/60. Pitching - clean arm action out of low ¾ slot, developing hip tilt at balance point, uses height to get downward plane on 76-77 MPH fastball that touches 78 MPH, late movement, effectively changes eye level, consistently induces weak contact, mixes 12-to-6 curveball 65-66 MPH with good bite on slider, he has more in the tank. Offensively - clean and fluid swing out of a nearly upright stance, keeps bat on level path through strike, full extension after contact with an exit velocity of 91 MPH - reached personal best of 93 MPH in February, lower body engagement will add to that number. Defensively - clean footwork, gathers body behind behind, deliberate transfer, accurate arm at 81 MPH.

Jackson Morris, RHP (2019/Brooklyn Tech) Sturdy 6-foot, 190-pound RHP, ran a 7.42/60. Pitching - quick arm action of a ¾ slot, effortless, late movement on 81-83 MPH that touches 84 MPH used to set up 2-to-7 curveball that freezes right-handed batter, hard bite on slider, mixes in change-up down in the zone at 75-76 MPH, consistently induces weak contact. Offensively - effective load, loose and fluid swing, brings bat through strike zone on level path, full extension with slight upper cut and exit velocity of 81 MPH, some evidence of counter rotation between upper and lower torso, further lower body engagement will increase power.

Gavin Krawiec, OF/RHP (2019/St. Francis) Slender 5-foot-11, 165-pound RHP, ran a 7.44/60. Offensively - effective load, loose and fluid swing with an exit velocity of 84 MPH; repeatable motion, keeps bat on level path through strike zone, some evidence of counter rotation between upper and lower torso, further lower body engagement will increase power. Pitching - commands fastball at 78-80 MPH down in the zone, some late movement, effectively changes eye level, 12-to-6 curveball at 68-69 MPH keeps hitters off-balance. Defensively - agile footwork, smooth and easy transfer, sure hands, accurate arm at 79 MPH.

Steven Carullo, C (2018/Commack) Sturdy, athletic 5-foot-10, 175-pound catcher, ran a 7.51/60. Offensively - effective load with appropriate pre-pitch movement, keeps hands inside ball and bat on level path through strike zone with an exit velocity of 87 MPH; some evidence of lower body engagement early in swing but tends to straighten up before contact. Defensively - stays low through the receiving process, smooth transfer to throwing hand, will need to adjust release point to improve accuracy, velocity at 73 MPH with POP time at 2.03-2.13.

Julian Jaume, MIF (2018/Telecom) Athletic 5-foot-8, 140-pound lefthanded batter, ran a 7.58/60. Offensively - effective load out of a nearly upright stance, keeps bat on level path through the strike zone, full extension after contact with an exit velocity of 74 MPH; repeatable motion, comfortable driving ball to middle third of the field, counter rotation between upper and lower torso with further lower body engagement will add to power. Defensively - agile footwork, sure hands, smooth and easy transfer with an infield velocity of 76 MPH

Zachary LaPlante, 1B (2019/Kenmore West) Slender 6-foot, 160 pound infielder, ran a 7.72/60. Defensively - basic footwork, fundamental abilities with a position velocity of 76 MPH.

Andrew Perry, 3B (2018/Shenendehowa) Athletic 6-foot-1, 180-pound infielder, ran a 7.73/60. Offensively - effective load, keeps hands inside ball and bat on level path through the strike zone, full extension after contact with an exit velocity of 85 MPH; repeatable motion, some evidence of counter rotation between upper and lower torso, further lower body engagement will add to power. Defensively - basic footwork, sure hands, deliberate transfer, accurate arm with a velocity of 80 MPH.

Alexander Kipp, MIF (2019/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) Sturdily-built 5-foot-7, 180-pound shortstop, ran a 7.78/60. Offensively - straight to the ball, keeps bat on level path, full extension after contact with an exit velocity of 81 MPH; hitch in loaded results in segmented swing, lower engagement will add to power. Defensively - soft hands, clean footwork, smooth and easy transfer, accurate arm across the infield at 72 MPH

Quinn Hanafin, MIF (2020/Sayre Area) Athletic 5-foot-9, 175-pound infielder, ran a 7.86/60. Offensively - clean and fluid swing, keeps bat on level path in the strike zone and hands inside the ball, makes consistent barrel contact, comfortable driving ball to the middle third with an exit velocity of 81 MPH; repeatable motion with some of evidence of counter rotation between upper and lower torso, further lower body engagement will add to power. Defensively - agile footwork, soft hands, confident and poised, fundamentally sound, accurate arm across infield at 76 MPH.

Ryan Martin, RHP (2019/St. Francis Prep) Lanky 6-foot-2, 145-pound RHP. Pitching - clean arm action out of low ¾ slot, uses height to get downward plane on 79-80 MPH fastball with late movement that touches he runs up to 84 MPH; uses hip tilt at balance point to generate momentum, throws tight 2-to-7 curveball 68-69 MPH, effectively works both sides of the plate, consistently induces weak contact, intriguing potential.

Vincent Sorrentino, OF/RHP (2018/Notre Dame Bishop Gibbons) Slight frame at 5-foot-9, 155 pounds. Offensively - smooth and fluid swing, short to the ball, keeps bat on level path through the strike zone, repeatable motion, full extension after contact with an exit velocity of  76 MPH; effective load, counter rotation between upper and lower torso will increase power. Defensively - clean footwork, smooth transfer, confident body language, accurate arm at 81 MPH. Pitching - quick arm action on fastball at 78-79 MPH, some evidence of late movement, use hip tilt at balance point to gather body for momentum will reap benefits. 

Jethro Hurt, C/3B (2018/Norman Thomas) Athletic 6-foot-2, 210-pound catcher. Offensively - exciting potential, uses inner knee rotation to trigger for an exit velocity of 90 MPH, powerful swing, comfortable driving ball to middle third of the field, head occasionally flares causing inconsistent barrel contact, further counter rotation between upper and lower torso will add consistency to power. Defensively - fundamentally sound, stays low through the receiving process, quick transfer, finding consistent release point will improve accuracy at 75 MPH, POP time at 2.03-2.06.

Ryan Mueller, RHP (2018/Lynbrok) Sturdily-built 6-foot, 200-pound RHP, Pitching - herky-jerky arm action (Sabathia-like), ball pops out of hand with late movement on fastball at 80-81 MPH; commands both sides of the plate, effectively changes eye level, moves 2-to-7 curveball at 71-73 MPH in and around the plate, easy to seeing him adding velocity with maturity. Offensively - effective load with powerful for an exit velocity at 92 MPH, barely scratching the surface, little to no lower body engagement, scary to think of the possibility when he gets a swing with repeatable motion.

Jonathan Fonseca, 1B/RHP (2018/James Madison) Powerfully-built, athletic frame at 6-foot-4, 230 pounds. Offensively - smooth and fluid swing, full extension after impact with exit velocity of 93 MPH, effective load, keeps head down, quick and powerful hands, repeatable motion, further lower body engagement will improve consistency, has more in the tank. Pitching - effortless delivery, uses height to get downward plane on fastball that explodes at the plate at 83-86 MPH, actualizing full potential of hip tilt at balance point will maximize power, throws curveball at 68-70 MPH for strikes, exciting possibilities.

Team 10

Benjamin Beauchamp, C (2019/McQuaid Jesuit) 6-foot-1, 180-pound athletic catcher, ran a 6.96/60. Offensively - smooth and easy swing, short to the ball, makes consistent barrel contact, slight upper cup after contact with full extension and an exit velocity of 85 MPH - has personal best of 92 MPH; repeatable motion, comfortable driving ball to middle third, elite level competitor who connected on first home run of high school career during sectional final and sparked a two-run seventh in come-from-behind 3-2 win. Defensively - fundamentally sound, easy transition to blocking, stays low through the receiving process, quick and easy transfer with a catcher velocity of 82 MPH and POP time of 1.96-2.05; clean footwork in the outfield, confident and poised. 

Sammy Cuevas, RHP (2018/Morris) Sturdy 5-foot-9, 180-pound right-hander. Pitching - clean arm action out of a low ¾ slot, stays consistently down in the zone, arm-side run on 83-86 MPH fastball that touches 87 MPH, commands 2-to-7 curveball at 74-75 MPH, with a thick frame it is easy to see him adding velocity as he matures.

Brendan Disonell, RHP (2019/Shenendehowa) Slender 5-foot-11, 155-pound RHP. Pitching - Stony Brook commit uses lower body to push off on 79-80 MPH fastball that touches 81 MPH, coming out of a ¾ slot shows late movement with sink, keeps batters off-balance with 2-to-7 curveball 71-73 MPH, hitters struggle to make consistent barrel contact.

AJ Fina, OF (2018/McQuaid Jesuit) Speedy 5-foot-11, 160-pound outfielder, ran a 6.94/60. Offensively - stays inside the ball, keeps bat on level path through the strike with extension after contact and an exit velocity of 78 MPH; repeatable motion, stays middle third of the field, lower body engagement will generate more power. Defensively - agile footwork, sure hands, smooth and easy transfer, effortless throwing motion at 68 MPH, he has more in the tank, reads ball well off the bat with elite-level tracking skills, capable of taking away hits.

George Gines, OF (2018/Pittsford-Mendon) Athletic 6-foot, 185-pound RHP, ran a 6.95/60.  Pitching - clean arm action out of a low ¾ slot, late, sinking movement on fastball at 77-79 MPH, stays consistently down in the zone, keeps hitters off balance with 2-to-7 curveball, effectively changes eye level, consistently induces weak contact. Offensively - out of a nearly upright stance, keeps hands inside ball and bat on a level path, makes consistent barrel contact with an exit velocity of 87 MPH; repeatable motion, comfortable staying middle third of the field, lower body engagement will add to power. Defensively - agile footwork, uses extra steps into crow hop, accurate arm at 84 MPH, tenacious competitor who plays his best in biggest games, above average defender off the mound.

Alex Gorski, RHP (2018/Penfield) Imposing 6-foot-4, 210-pound RHP. Pitching - methodical delivery, out of ¾ slot uses height to get downward plane on 72-75 MPH fastball that touches 77 MPH, gets positive hip tilt at the balance point, tight break on 1-to-7 curveball for strikes at 59-61 MPH, further lower body engagement will add velocity.

Tyler Griggs, 3B/2B (2019/McQuaid Jesuit) Sturdy 5-foot-9, 180-pound third baseman, ran a 7.35/60. Offensively - smooth and fluid swing, effortless, makes consistent barrel contact, keeps bat on level path with full extension and exit velocity of 87 MPH; repeatable motion, short to the ball, evidence of counter rotation between upper and lower torso, further lower body engagement will add to power. Defensively - agile footwork, balanced, confident body language, sure hands, smooth and easy transfer with a velocity of 76 MPH across the infield. 

Nathan Hampson, 1B/LHP (2018/Victor) Solidly-built 6-foot-2, 210-pound LHP. Pitching - uses height to get downward plane on 72-75 MPH fastball that touches 76 MPH, gets positive hip tilt at the balance point, sinking arm-side run, tight 11-to-5 shape on curveball at 60-61 MPH freezes batters, consistently induces weak contact. Offensively - uses counter rotation between upper and lower torso for an exit velocity of 86 MPH; repeatable motion, keeps bat on level path through strike zone, heavy load, tends to pull side. Defensively - basic footwork, sure hands, smooth transfer with an infield velocity of 65 MPH.

Ryan Hill, MIF (2018/Webster Thomas) Athletic 5-foot-8, 150-pound middle infielder, ran a 7.33/60. Offensively - keeps hands inside the ball and bat on level path through strike zone, makes consistent barrel contact, comfortable driving ball to middle third with an exit velocity of 81 MPH; repeatable motion, further lower body engagement will add to power. Defensively - agile and clean footwork, soft hands, smooth and easy transfer, accurate arm at 77 MPH; high baseball IQ, elite level competitor.

Erik Johnson, LHP (2018/McQuaid Jesuit) Crafty 6-foot-4, 165-pound LHP with a projectable pitcher’s frame. Pitching - gets positive hip tilt at the balance point, fastball at 76-77 MPH out ¾ slot has late sink, hard bite on slider at 66-67 MPH, mixes in change up at 70-71 MPH, potential to add velocity as he grows into frame.

Brendan Miller, OF (2020/Penfield) Athletic 5-foot-9, 160-pound outfielder, ran a 6.84/60. Defensively - agile footwork, soft hands, confident body language, smooth and easy transfer with an accurate arm from the outfield at 76 MPH; took infield and looked equally poised, economic footwork, previously registered exit velocity off tee at 77 MPH, intriguing potential.

Peyton Parmeter, U/RHP (2018/Avon) Sturdy 5-foot-10, 195-pound infielder. Offensively - quick to the ball with an effective load, keeps bat on level path through the strike zone with full extension and an exit velocity of 75 MPH; some evidence of counter rotation between upper and lower half, further lower body engagement will add to power. Defensively - basic footwork, sure hands, smooth transfer, accurate arm at 68 MPH.

Ryan Peterson, LHP (2018/Nichols) Sturdy 6-foot-2, 205-pound LHP with upside. Pitching - uses height to get downward plane on fastball at 76-77 MPH, late movement out of ¾ slot, gets hip tilt at balance point, will add velocity and movement when he learns how to push off, throws curveball at 70-71 MPH for strikes.  

Easton Rex, 1B (2019/Juan Diego Catholic) Solidly-built 6-0, 215-pound left-handed batter, ran an 8.1/60. Offensively - effective load, short to the ball, keeps bat on level path through the strike zone, strong, quick hands and an exit velocity of 78 MPH; repeatable motion, evidence of counter rotation between upper and lower body, further lower body engagement will add to power, just scratching the surface. Defensively - basic footwork, sound fundamentally, sure hands, confident transfer with infield velocity of 68 MPH

Santino Rosso, MIF (2019/Victor) Athletic 5-foot-9, 160-pound middle infielder, ran a 7.34/60. Defensively - agile footwork, confident body language, aggressive mindset, soft hands, smooth and easy transfer, accurate arm at 80 MPH. Offensively - switch hitter, keeps bat on level path with full extension and exit velocity of 78 MPH from right side and 73 MPH/left side; repeatable motion, tends toward pull side, lower body engagement will add to power. 

Tommy Ryan, C (2018/Victor) Sturdy 6-foot, 195-pound catcher, ran a 7.47/60. Offensively - effective load, stays inside the ball and keeps bat on level path through the strike zone with an exit velocity of 84 MPH; repeatable motion, developing lower body engagement, counter rotation between upper and lower torso will add to power. Defensively - fundamentally sound, basic footwork, efficient transfer with a velocity of 74 MPH and POP time of 2.0-2.12, finding consistent release point will improve accuracy.

Mike Sabatine, OF (2018/Fairport) Athletic 5-foot-9, 175-pound outfielder, ran a 6.38/60. Offensively - effective load, fluid swing, keeps bat on level path through strike zone with full extension and an exit velocity of 80 MPH; repeatable motion, comfortable driving ball to middle third, evident lower body engagement, developing rhythm. Defensively - University of Maine commit has agile footwork, no wasted motion, smooth and easy transfer, gathers body behind ball, gets downward plane, accurate arm at 79 MPH, savvy outfielder who tracks with economic lines.

Adam Shaffer, LHP (2018/Cameron County) 6-foot, 189-pound LHP with a projectable pitcher’s build. Pitching - quick arm action, uses height out of a ¾ slot to get downward plane on fastball at 81-83 MPH, some late movement, comes to hip tilt at balance point, learning how to use the mound to generate momentum, will add to velocity, shows curveball at 67-71 MPH, will want to maintain motion and release point between pitches. 

Patrick Sherron, RHP (2020/Rush-Henrietta) Sturdy 5-foot-10, 175-pound RHP. Pitching - Quick arm action out of a ¾ slot, uses height to get downward plane, late-sinking movement on fastball at 74-75 MPH, maintains motion and release on 12-to-6 curveball at 61-63 MPH, developing hip tilt at balance point to increase velocity, up and coming talent. 

Michael Siano, 1B (2018/Queensbury) Solidly-built 6-foot-2, 220-pound left-handed batter. Offensively - fluid and effortless swing, inner knee rotation triggers hips into a powerful motion for an exit velocity of 90 MPH; repeatable motion, keeps bat on level path through the strike zone, comfortable driving ball to middle third, makes consistent barrel contact, counter rotation between upper and lower torso could add to already impressive exit velocity. Defensively - basic footwork and fundamentals, sure glove, deliberate transfer, infield velocity of 64 MPH

Raymond Specht, MIF (2018/Rush-Henrietta) Athletic 6-foot-1, 170-pound infielder who is just growing into his frame, ran a 7.12/60. Offensively - short to the ball, with clean, fluid swing, stays on level bat path through the strike zone, comfortable driving to middle third of the field with an exit velocity of 79 MPH - that number will increase as he fills out frame, further lower body engagement will help in the process. Defensively - clean footwork, stays balanced, soft hands, quick transfer, accurate arm at 73 MPH, best baseball is ahead of him.

David Stirpe, MIF (2018/Hilton) Athletic 5-foot-11, 155-pound infielder, ran a 6.94/60. Offensively - keeps hands inside ball and bat on level path through the strike zone, gets full extension after contact with an exit velocity of 81 MPH; repeatable motion, drives the ball to all fields, evident lower body engagement, further counter rotation between upper and lower half will produce more power. Defensively - soft hands, confident body language, agile footwork, smooth and easy transfer, accurate arm at 81 MPH.

Hunter Walsh, RHP (2019/McQuaid Jesuit) Athletic 6-foot, 165-pound RHP. Pitching - quick arm action, uses height to get downward plane on 78-80 MPH fastball that touches 81 MPH, maintains motion and release point on 12-to-6 curveball at 64-67 MPH, resilient hurler who maintains composure in tight situations.

Damian Wright, C (2018/Webster Thomas) Solidly-built 5-foot-10, 185-pound catcher, ran a 7.06/60. Offensively - Inner knee rotation triggers hips for fluid swing, keeps bat on level path through strike zone, comfortable driving the ball to middle third of the field with extension after contact and exit velocity of 67 MPH, repeatable motion, lower body engagement will add to power. Defensively - fundamentally sound, stays low through receiving process, quick transfer to throwing hand, accurate arm at 76 MPH with a POP time of 1.99-2.07

Griffin Yastremski, OF (2019/Haverling) Athletic 6-foot-1, 198-pound outfielder, ran a 7.51/60. Offensively - out of a nearly upright stance, short to the ball, keeps bat on level path through the strike zone, makes consistent barrel contact with full extension and an exit velocity of 84 MPH; repeatable motion, comfortable driving ball to middle third of the field, lower body engagement will add to power.
