Nevada Athletics: Quick Hits

Brett Harrison
Nevada Scouting Director

The Nevada Athletics Scout Day in the books, we now take a look back at the standouts from yesterday's event. The Scout Day included a Pro-Style Workout where players ran a Laser Timed 60 Yard Dash, took a Batting Practice, Catcher Pop Times/Velocity, Outfield Evaluations/Velocity and Infield Evaluation/Velocity concluding with Pitches Bullpens. This was an exclusive event for players in the Nevada Athletics program to highlight current players as well as a spotlight on the current state of the program itself.

Kody Bialas / 2023 / 3B/RHP

The 2023 two-way prospect was exceptional on both sides of the ball, but his ability at the plate is what separated him from his peers at the Nevada Athletics Scout Day. Starting with minimal pre pitch movement in a tall, straight legged stance, he used an efficient bat path to that allowed him to barrel up balls throughout his round with some present twitch. The power he displays could directly be attributed to the added physical strength the he has added over the past year. Defensively, he relies on his athleticism through the fielding process that is complimented by his 87 mph Infield Velocity. Bialas is a player we will considering to represent Nevada at the 2021 Future Games taking place later this summer.

Karthik Gondy / 2021 / 1B/RHP

The physical 6-foot-1, 210 pound, Ivy League caliber student (5.2 GPA / ACT - 35), put on the most impressive round of batting practice at yesterday's event with his impressive power put on display as he left the yard multiple times to left-center field. Gondy earned a share of the Nevada Athletics Scout Day top Raw Exit Velocity at 93 mph. His ability to stay in his lower half, paired with his present hand speed make him interesting offensive prospect that we expect to have his breakout year this Spring in a potent Athletics lineup. Defensively, his foot work through the fielding process is in development, but his ability and feel around the bag should allow him to stay at that spot at the next level. Gondy is a player we would expect to be locked up soon with his academic excellence paired with his hit/power tools the plate.

Alec Vincent / 2022 / C/UT

Vincent found himself at the top of a half of the event's leaderboards, but stood out mostly with his ability behind the plate. After posting his event best 1.94 Pop Time, Vincent caught a handful of bullpens where the barrel chested prospect showcased is receiving abilities, using his present strength and flexibility to stick pitches around the zone. During his offensive evaluation, he earned a share of the event's top Raw Exit Velocity at 93 mph and followed it up with a batting practice round that saw balls driven to both gaps with some authority. The separator for Vincent is that the could hold down just about any spot on the field, showing well at multiple positions with his foot speed most likely keeping him at a corner spot in both infield and outfield.

Joey Loubert / 2021 / RHP

The 6-foot-3, 180 pound, Taft recruit, threw one of the cleanest bullpens of the day with a three pitch mix that includes a fastball, curveball and a changeup. His lean, projectable frame leads you to believe that his will be able to add velocity down the road as he add physical strength, especially in the lower half, to his 83 mph fastball. His breaking ball had 11/5 shape with some flashes of back up when he leaves it arm side, but was able to throw it for strikes. Loubert's changeup is his best secondary pitch with both sink and fade out of a high 3/4 slot at 72-75 mph. He is going to be a significant piece in the Athletics rotation this Spring.
