Northern Nevada Fall Ball Notes

Buddy Gouldsmith
Nevada Scouting Director

Wednesday evening at Lee Mitchell Field on the campus of Reed High School, the Reed Raiders hosted the McQueen Lancers in a fall ball contest.  Winter is quickly approaching and the chilling temperatures saw the crowd huddled in blankets and beenies, as fall baseball in Northern Nevada heads into its final few weeks. In typical fashion, each team ushered in a pitcher an inning, and a few players caught the eye of PBR Nevada.

Dylan Husted, RHP, Reed, (2019)

Lanky, 6-foot-2, 155. Husted has a high-waisted body with long levers. He is a long projection pitcher with tremendous room for growth and a good feel to pitch.  Husted maintains a solid delivery from a true ¾ slot. He featured a FB 78-81 with arm side life and occasional sink.  Husted showed an advanced feel for a changeup with depth.  The one inning look did not reveal a breaking ball but he did not need it, making quick work of the lancer lineup.

Preston Brook, RHP, Reed, (2019)

Undersized, 5-foot-9, 140. Brook has a small frame but pitches above his stature.  He has an athletic delivery.  He will occasionally alter his delivery to disrupt hitter timing by pausing after leg lift.  With loose arm action and some effort, Brook’s FB was 80-84 with area control.  His breaking ball was impressive in spite of some command issues, 68-71.  The breaking ball was sharp with tight spin and depth. He struggled to land it on this evening, but previous looks have shown a breaking ball with the makings of an out pitch.

Zach Foster, OF/RHP, McQueen, (2020)

Projectable, 6-foot-3, 170. Foster looks the part.  He has an athletic build with slightly sloped shoulders that taper to a small waist and a lower half built for speed.  He showed an accurate arm with on target throws and solid carry.  He has an aggressive swing with power potential. He ran well underway.

Aiden Vestbie, SS, McQueen, (2020)

Athletic, 5-foot-11, 160, Vestbie is evenly proportioned with room for weight and strength gains.  He has solid infield actions with rhythm to his footwork and exchange.  He had a tendency to rush throws, creating arm side misses on throws to first base.  Vestbie has projectable arm strength and a feel for touch throws on the run and turning double plays. At the plate, he has an aggressive swing with good barrel release.  There is some backside collapse leading to length in his bat path, but the athleticism is intriguing and contact playable.
