Ohio Spotlight Game: #31 Lakewood St. Edward vs #49 Avon

AVON - A pair of infield singles and a bloop single in the top of the seventh was all Avon needed to come away with a victory over St. Edward, 4-1. Both teams came in to the game looking for their fourth win on the season, With all said and done, Avon stayed unbeaten at 4-0, while St. Ed’s dropped to 3-2.

Avon’s offense couldn’t get much going in the first 6 innings against LHP and 2017 Northwestern Commit, Quinn Lavelle.

Through the first 6 innings, Lavelle struck out 9 and only allowed 4 hits.

In the top of the seventh, Avon managed to load the bases on a single, an error, and an intentional walk. Leadoff hitter Ryan Socha then topped a ball that dribbled down the third base line to score the game’s first run. A bloop single by Jackson Myers made the game 2-0 and Lavelle was pulled with 1 out in the seventh and the bases still loaded.

Avon managed to score 2 more runs off uncommitted 2018 RHP Derek Tackett, both charged to Lavelle.

A seventh inning rally by St. Edward fell short after they too loaded up the bases with one out in the bottom half of the seventh, only managing to push 1 run across.

Top Performances on the Day:
  • St. Edward 2020 2B/OF Mac Wainwright - A top prospect in the freshman class, Mac had the hardest hit ball of the day, squaring up an 82 mph fastball for a double to left center. On the day, went 1-2 with a double and a walk
  • Avon 2017 2B Neil Strodtbeck - Went 2 for 3 with 2 hard hit singles, one to left field and one squared right back u the middle, also stole a base
  • Avon 2019 RHP Nathan Brooks - Came in relief in the 5th inning, showed good command of fastball and curveball. Struck out one, gave up 1 hit in 2 innings of work.
