Ohio Spotlight Game: No. 5 Amherst Steele vs North Olmsted

AMHERST - Weather pushed the game’s start time back an hour, but the wait was worth it for #5 Amherst as they captured their 19th win of the season, defeating North Olmsted 7-2.

Xavier Moore (Ohio State Commit, #5 ranked in 2017 class) started on the hill for Amherst, throwing five innings giving up just one unearned run. Moore also added an RBI single to help stretch Amherst’s lead in the fourth.

Amherst scored a run in the bottom of the first, with the first two hitters getting out via a first pitch groundout and a flyout. Mark Harris (Uncommitted senior, #316 ranked in 2017 class) singled down the left field line and stole second base on a delay steal that caught the middle infielders sleeping. Chad Jones (Walsh University commit, #196 ranked in 2017 class) drove in Harris with a single to right field.

North Olmsted quickly responded in the top of the second after Cole Wagner singled up the middle, advanced to third on a fielding error, and then scored on a wild pitch. Moore stuck out the side to allow no further damage, leaving base runners at first and second.

Evan Shawver (Nebraska commit, #17 ranked in 2018 class) led off the third inning with a double to the wall in left center, and Jeremy Smith brought him in with a single to left field. Smith proceeded to steal second base, and scored easily on a double off the bat of Mark Harris. Harris went to third on a throwing error by North Olmsted. With Harris on third and the infield in, the next two hitters for Amherst were retired. Harris tried timing up the catcher’s throw back to the pitcher to steal home and broke for the plate. The catcher ran Harris back to third but threw the ball down the left field and Harris scored easily.

Amherst tacked on another two out run with a walk to Ryan Glowacki (La Salle commit, #100 ranked 2018 class) and a Kyle Dalzell (Uncommitted 2019 class) single to right field that sent the La Salle commit to third. Dalzell stole second base and with a first and third situation, the throw down was cut off by the second baseman, but Glowacki beat the throw back at home plate to score Amherst’s fourth and final run of the inning.

Two more runs crossed the plate in the fourth after relief pitcher Darian Stanley struck out the leadoff hitter, but then allowed three straight walks to load the bases. Chad Jones made the game 6-1 with a sac fly to right center, and Xavier Moore made it 7-1 on the next pitch with a single to center.

North Olmsted tacked on an unearned run in the top of the seventh on a hit by pitch, a single, and an error.
