PBR New England Spotlight Game: Fairfield Warde vs Simsbury

Tuesday afternoon was a great day for a baseball game at Muzzy Field in Bristol, CT, where Fairfield Warde High School took on Simsbury High School in a LL semifinals game.

It seemed to be a pitchers duel early. Brandon White ‘18 was on the bump for Simsbury High School. During the regular season he posted 2.52 ERA and early on he showed good stuff, creating a lot of ground balls.

On the other side, Fairfield Warde’s starter, John Natoli ‘16 was dominant. He showed great command and a nasty breaker for his go-to swing and miss pitch. He had 8 strikeouts with 3 walks and did not give up a run.

Both pitchers shut down the the first three batters in the 1st. It was the bottom of the 2nd where things got exciting.

A ball was hit into left field, with a runner on second and he was sent home. Fairfield Warde Junior, Owen Buhrendorf sniped the runner at home with a pinpoint throw.

It continued to be a 0-0 game until the bottom of the 3rd.

Junior, Owen Buhrendorf got Fairfield started with a single. That was followed by a great at bat which lead to an opposite field single by Joey Deustch ‘16. With 2 outs in the inning and runners on 1st and 3rd, the Mustangs veteran players delivered four consecutive extra base hits. Reece Maniscalco ‘16, John Natoli, Zavier Espinel ‘16 all had doubles and then Daniel DeBartolomeo crushed a triple to put the game away. After a pass ball and an error, the Mustangs sat on top 8-0.

Senior, Peter Soja came in relief in the bottom 3rd. Besides a throwing error he pitched flawlessly and didn’t give up a hit the rest of the game.

The game was cruising until the top of the 6th where Simsbury had their best opportunity to get on the scoreboard with the first two batters reaching base.

John Natoli stepped up and retired the next three consecutive batters. Natoli was then sent back out to pitch in the top of the 7th. He walked the first batter, but after a mound visit he settled down and came back with a strikeout and two flyouts to complete the combined team shut out.
