PBR New England Spotlight Game: Hartford vs Colchester

COLCHESTER, Vt. -- Codi Smith (2016 OF) went three-for-four with two stolen bases, Hunter Perkins (2018 IF/LHP) drove in three-runs with a big double and shutdown relief pitching by Jordan Allard (2017 RHP/IF) fueled Hartford to an 11-1 win over third-seeded Colchester in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Vermont Division I State Tournament Friday at Saddlemire Field.

The 11th-seeded Hurricanes (11-7) continued their upset run in the tourney and advance to face second-seeded St. Johnsbury in the semifinals on Tuesday, June 7.

Both teams scored an unearned run in the first before Tyler Hamilton (2018 C) singled home Jacob Perkins (2016 IF/RHP) to give Hartford a 2-1 lead against uncommitted Colchester ace Derek Sanderson (2016 RHP) in the third. Sanderson ran into trouble in the fifth walking the first three hitters to load the bases before Hunter Perkins' long double to right center cleared the bases to make it 6-1. Smith, a Lasell commit, singled off Lakers reliever Tyler Bushey (2016 RHP/IF) to score Perkins. He then stole second, moved to third on a single by Allard. Smith came home on a double steal to cap the five-run fifth that broke open the contest.

Singles by Hunter Perkins (2-for-4), Smith and Austin Gaudette (IF/OF 2018), two walks and two wild pitches led to four more Hartford runs in the seventh.

Allard came in to relieve Hartford starter Dylan Spencer (2017 RHP/IF) with one on in the fourth and struck out two hitters to strand the then-tying run at third base. Allard and Spencer would alternate on the mound the rest of the way with the big lead to conserve pitch counts for the semifinals. Allard finished the Lakers by striking out the side in order in the seventh. The junior righty used a low-to-mid-80s fastball to record nine Ks while giving up two singles and walking one over three and two-thirds innings to pick up the victory.

Tom Vesosky (2018 OF) had two of Colchester's four hits on the day while Sanderson took the loss. The hard-throwing righty ended his standout high school career with seven strikeouts but walked five in four-plus innings. At the plate he walked twice and stole two bases. Colchester wraps up its season at 14-4, one of its best records in program history.

Top-seeded BFA St. Albans (17-1), also ranked first in the latest PBR Vermont power ratings, will host fifth-seeded Burr and Burton (15-3) in Tuesday's other semifinal. The Division I title game will be held the coming weekend, June 11 or 12, at historic Centennial Field in Burlington (date, time TBA).
