PBR New England Spotlight Game: Lexington vs Waltham

In a wild one at Bentley University, the Minutemen of Lexington were able to hold off the Waltham Hawks in extra innings as the teams combined to use seven different pitchers.

Waltham would score first without the benefit of a hit, as leadoff hitter and senior Matt Sweet walked and stole second. He would move to third on a groundout and scored on another groundout by Devllin to give the Hawks the early 1-0 lead.

Lexington would bust loose against junior starter Hunter Duarte in the 3rd.

Freshman Anthony Bianchi started the inning with a single to left and moved to third on a double by Frelick. Brother and junior catcher Nico Frelick then walked to load the bases. One out later Pawloski lined one into left to score two and put the Minuteman on top 2-1.

A walk to junior first baseman Zach Stevens reloaded the bases for junior DH Henry Potdevin, who added a two-run single of his own to extend the lead. Potdevin would later score on a fielder’s choice by senior second baseman Kazu Ebihara and Lexington had a 5-1 lead.

The Minutemen would load the bases in the 5th on walks to Ebihara and Nico Frelick and a single by Sal Frelick. Sophomore right fielder Ryan Cervone followed with his first hit of the game, a line shot to right center, plating two and extending the lead to 7-1.

Meanwhile, Lexington senior starter Mark Jones had not allowed a hit through four, which would change rapidly in the 5th.

Junior first baseman Danny Smucker and classmate, DH Darren Battista, singled to start the frame. A walk to sophomore left fielder Billy Sameski loaded the bases before junior catcher Charlie LeClair grounded a single through the middle, scoring Smucker.

A sacrifice fly by Sweet cut the lead to 7-3. Sophomore shortstop Anthony Maione singled home another run before Devllin laced a two-run triple to right, chasing Jones and the score stood 7-6.

Potdevin added another run for Lexington in the 6th after reaching on an error, moving to third on another error and eventually scoring on a wild pitch.

Junior RHP Josh Savitz cruised through the bottom half, and Sal Frelick gave the Minutemen a three run cushion after leading off the 7th with a triple and scoring on an errant pickoff throw.

The Hawks would not roll over and die in their half. Sweet was hit by a pitch to lead off, stole second and scored a batter later on a single by Devllin. After a second out and Devllin on second, senior Sean Turpin would pinch hit and doubled to right-center, plating Devllin. Following a walk to Battista, Sameski tied the game with a single to center and the game was headed for extras.

Stevens led off the inning with a walk and an out later stole second. After another out, Ebihara was hit by a pitch and with two outs Bianchi singled to right, scoring Stevens on a very close play.

Sal Frelick completed his huge day with a two-run double to follow and the lead was 12-9.

Bianchi came on to pitch the 8th and set down the Hawks in order for the save.

Senior RHP Aaron Jammal took the loss after coming on in the 7th, while sophomore LHP Jack Pawloski earned the victory despite blowing the save and only pitching one inning.

Leading the offensive attack for Lexington was sophomore shortstop Sal Frelick (Boston College) who had four hits, three for extra bases with three runs and four RBI. Brendan Devllin (Saint Anselm) led the Hawks with two hits, including a triple and four RBI.
