PBR New England Spotlight Game: St. Johnsbury vs Mt. Abraham

Bristol, Vt.  -- Backed by timely hitting and strong pitching by junior lefty Patrick Greenan (2017 LHP/1B), St. Johnsbury (Vt.) Academy built an early lead and held off Mount Abraham (Vt.) Union for a 7-5 victory in Bristol. The Hilltoppers improved to 12-3 with the win and is in the drivers seat for the second seed in the upcoming Vermont Division I Tournament with one regular season game to play.

Greenan, one of the top junior pitchers in Vermont, held the Eagles to just three hits and no walks through the first five innings while St.J. built a 7-0 lead.

Back-to-back doubles by Aaron Morrison (2016 OF) and Husson-bound Matt Graciano (2016 OF) plated two runs in the second.

The Hilltoppers added a pair of unearned runs in the third, coming home on sacrifice flies by sophomore Jake Choiniere (2018 C) and Jacob Johnson (2016 3B).

They added two more in the fifth, again on two-straight doubles by Graciano and freshman Jacob Cady (2018 IF), and a single run in the top of the sixth when Graciano was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The gritty and youthful Eagles (only one senior in its 10-man lineup) came alive in their half of the sixth sending 10 men to the plate against Greenan.

A pair of two-run singles were the big blows, one by Wyatt Gendreau (2017 IF) and another with two-outs by Caleb Bonvouloir (2017 IF/RHP). A pickoff-caught stealing play of a runner at first by Greenan ended the threat. The junior lefty allowed a two-out infield single in the seventh before retiring Bonvouloir for the final out.

Greenan walked only one, hit one batter and struck out seven in his complete game effort. Graciano and Cady, the 1-2 hitters in the St. Johnsbury lineup both went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.

Coleman Russell (2017 IF) and Zach Hines (2017 OF) each had two singles for the Eagles who finished with nine hits, five in the sixth inning rally.

Rebuilding and playing a tough schedule, Mt. Abraham fell to 4-11 but with a win over D-I Spaulding in its regular season finale at home, they could be seeded as high as sixth in the upcoming Vermont Division II State Tournament.
