On Wednesday, June 13, 2018 we held the PBR Scout Day- Sioux Falls Cyclones event at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, SD. The event featured prospects from the 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 classes who showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff. Thank you to the players, parents, and my staff; along with everyone from the Sioux Falls Cyclones organization and Augustana University for working so hard to allow this event to take place.

Evaluations- alphabetical

Hayden Arndt OF/2B, Sioux Falls Roosevelt (SD), 2022
5-foot-6, 106-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 8.58 runner.  Balanced setup with slight load back.  Bat is slow at times with consistent contact.  Uses the whole field well and shows ability to hit located pitches.  65 mph exit velocity. OF- Fields through the ball and transitions into throw.  OK athlete with average arm for age.  Throws are 65 mph with accuracy to bag.  INF- Flat feet that stop at fielding position.  Actions are stiff and young for age.  Shows an accurate arm at 64 across the infield.  On mound- Rock to side and swings up to delivery.  Good direction to plate.  Ok arm action that pushes baseball at release.  Fastball has slight cutting action at 62-64 mph.  Big shape and loose spin curveball with 11/5 shape.  Change-up has average fade and sink.

Mason Bierema OF/LHP, Sioux Falls O’Gorman (SD), 2021
5-foot-9, 135-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player.  7.59 runner.  Slight gather and rhythm in load with not much movement in hands.  Mid/pull approach that shows some pop in bat for age.  Has ability to use the whole field.  75 mph exit velocity.  OF- Good glove and uses legs to transfer into throw.  Moves well to ball with a short arm action.  Throws are 70 mph and accurate to bag with average carry.  On mound- Repeatable delivery with balance.  Short and quick arm action with above average command.  Fastball is consistently thrown for strikes.  Curveball has small shape and can be inconsistent.  Above average change-up thrown with fastball arm speed.

Nate Davis C/1B, Sioux Falls O’Gorman (SD), 2020
6-foot-3, 170-pound right-handed hitting catcher.  7.76 runner.  Long lanky frame with average bat speed.  Solid contact, Mid/pull approach and shows the ability to use the whole field.  79 mph exit velocity.  Catcher- upright throwing position, throws had average carry, short to bag but accurate. 70 mph arm strength. Average transfer with short arm action.  2.08-2.22 pop times.  Balance in setup position.  Moves side to side well and above average blocker with good flexibility.  Has strength in glove and hold pitches in zone well.  On mound; long and stiff bow and arrow type arm action, Fastball is straight that was 75-77 mph. Sharp 11/5 shape breaking ball, change-up was firm and flat with average feel, inconsistent for strikes.

Will Donelan OF/LHP, Sioux Falls O’Gorman(SD), 2019
5-foot-9, 160-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.81 runner.  Shows decent balance in the box, with some stiffness in hands. Rhythm and small leg lift in load. Solid contact with a gap to gap approach and a relatively easy swing.  78 mph exit velocity. Average glove to field, short arm action and accuracy with online throws to bag. 73 mph arm strength from outfield.  On mound; some front leg swing and a short arm action.  Fast was 70-73 mph and had slight run and sink with occasional cut action.  Ok feel for breaking ball, can lack shape.  Change-up has slight running action with average fade and shows arm speed.

Ryne Hammerstrom OF/SS, Sioux Falls Lincoln (SD), 2021
5-foot-9, 155-pound left-handed hitting outfielder.  6.87 runner.  Raw in the box.  Slight arm bar in load.  Rock back load that stays back through swing.  Bat path cuts across contact at times.  Shows line drive contact to mid/pull side.  Limited extension through contact.  Soft contact to opposite field.  82 mph exit velocity.  OF- Different movements, long robotic arm action. 79 mph from outfield.   Below average glove, feet, with accurate throws to bag.  INF- Stiff actions and fields back on heels.  Average feet with a longer arm action. 75 mph arm strength.  Average all around in the infield.

Dylan Howard RHP/OF, Sioux Falls Roosevelt (SD), 2022
5-foot-8, 155-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player.  8.33 runner.  Athletic setup with high hands.  Solid swing plane with a gap to gap approach.  Good hands at the plate with consistent contact that mainly results in line drives and fly balls.  Exit velocity of 70 mph.  OF- Decent athlete that moves ok to ball and fields through well.  Long release on throws with 69 mph arm strength.  IF- Average feet and hands.  Glove flips out to field and funnels back to body.  Arm is accurate with 66 mph from infield.  On mound- Good balance and direction to plate through delivery.  Long arm action with good extension to the plate.  Some run on fastball that tops at 72 mph but sits 69-70 mph.  Small shape and break on curveball.  Good feel for change-up with above average fade and sink. 

Benjamin Irsfeld C/SS, Sioux Falls Roosevelt (SD), 2022 
5-foot-8, 140-pound right-handed hitting catcher.  7.72 runner.  Slight rock back load, has tendency to spin and comes around contact.  Fly ball hitter with mid/pull approach.  Could use more from lower half that will help with short finish through contact.  Will use opposite field gap well at times.  76 mph exit velocity.  Catching- Good feet and hands on throws with a smooth transfer.  2.06-2.14 pop times.  Really looks like a quality catch and throw 2022 grad. 69 mph from behind the plate.  Receiving shows a narrow stance with good balance and flexibility.  Let’s off-speed pitches develop with a tendency to stab at fastballs.  Average overall.  INF- heavy feet with a stiff glove and funnels ball into body.  Makes the routine play with average carry and accuracy.  72 mph arm strength.  On mound- slight turn in delivery and has some recoil at release.  Short arm action and has slight run on Fastball.  Fastball is thrown at 76-78 mph for consistent strikes.  Curveball has 11/5 shape with sharp break and tends to leave to arm side.  Straight action on change-up with some late fade.

Charlie Jacobson LHP/OF, Marshall (MN), 2022
6-foot-4, 185-pound left-handed 2-way player.  Big projectable body, drops hands to contact, a pull approach swing that can be stiff at times, but makes consistent line drive contact. 75 mph exit velocity.  OF- average athlete who works through the ball with good glove.  Above average carry and accuracy to bag with throws.  78 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; throws slightly across body and cuts off finish to extension.  Fastball has good downhill plane with late cutting action. Fastball is 77-79 mph topping at 81 mph.  Curve ball has 12/6 action with some inconsistency at times.  Change-up is serviceable with fade and a usable pitch.  Strong follow on the mound for 2022.

Carter LaBrie RHP/C, Brandon Valley (SD), 2025
5-foot-1, 95-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player.  9.28 runner.  Shows a slight crouch stance with a shoulder load.  Consistent solid contact in swing with a gap to gap approach.  62 mph exit velocity.  Catching- sets up high with pause between catch exchange and throw.  3.00-3.34 pop times. Throws are accurate and 54 mph arm strength.  On mound- quick tempo delivery.  Shows the ability to throw strikes.  Fastball was 58-60 mph. 

Jaxon LaBrie SS/RHP, Brandon Valley (SD), 2020
5-foot-9, 145-pound right-handed 2-way player. 7.52 runner.  Upright stance with back elbow setup.  Body load to transfer weight into swing.  Gap to gap hitter with solid pop in swing.  80 mph exit velocity.  Flashes average footwork and hands in the field.  Works through ball with clean exchange. Accurate to bag with average carry on throws. 76 mph arm strength.  On mound; easy effort in delivery with long arm action.  Fastball was 76-78 mph with command to glove side of plate and cut action.  Larger 11/5 shape breaking ball with sweeping break. Change-up has good arm speed with fade to bottom of zone.  Overall, average command of strike zone with 3 pitches.

Charles Lockwood Powell OF/2B, Sioux Falls Lincoln (SD), 2021
5-foot-8, 165-pound right-handed hitting outfielder.  7.57 runner.  Rhythm in hands to start, slight arm bar. Ok bat path that is pushed through the zone.  Gap to gap hitter with average pop and contact.  77 mph exit velocity.  OF- Long release arm action with average arm and carry to bag.  72 mph arm strength. Throws are online.  Average feet and glove.  INF- Heavy feet with stiff hands.  Lacks athleticism in INF.  Throws are accurate with below average carry.  65 mph infield arm strength.

Oscar Lockwood-Powell 3B/OF, Sioux Falls Lincoln (SD), 2022
5-foot-9, 150-pound right-handed hitting infielder.  7.57 runner.  Narrow base with a hand load down.  A swing plane that is down to contact and exits the zone early causing ground ball contact.  72 mph exit velocity.  Catching- Average arm at 68 mph with accuracy from behind the plate.  Pop time in 2.20-2.32.  Exchange is long and down and takes some time to release.  INF- Average feet and hands.  Glove tends to come out late to field.  Arm is average at 70 mph with long release.  Has a tendency to stop feet to throw.

Stewart Nickel RHP/1B, Harrisburg (SD), 2021
6-foot-4, 210-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player.  7.31 runner.  Projectable body with long levers.  Has a tendency to pull off ball at contact.  Uses the whole field with average contact.  Young bat that is a follow if his game continues to grow.  75 mph exit velocity.  INF- Heavy feet with average glove. Moves ok for size and age.  Long release and arm action.  72 mph infield arm strength.  On mound- Solid balanced delivery that lands hard to throw across body.  Fastball is straight with ok tilted plane and able to throw for strikes.  69-71 mph fastball velocity.  Curveball has 12/6 shape with loose spin that can land for strikes. Change-up has cut action.

Marcus Phillips 3B/SS, Sioux Falls Roosevelt (SD), 2022
6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed hitter.  8.28 runner.  Athletic frame that starts upright with rhythm to load.  Pull swing that shows line drive contact.  Comes around ball occasionally.  80 mph exit velocity. IF- Long arm action that carries well and accuracy to bag. 78 mph arm strength.  Good actions, stays below ball with above average feet and hands.  On mound- Long easy arm action with good extension to finish.  Heavy cut action on 78-80 mph Fastball.  Curveball has tighter spin with a sweeping 11/5 break.  Good feel for change-up that is thrown for strikes with average fade action.  Strong follow in 2022 class.

Jacob Schwab OF/C, Sioux Falls O’Gorman (SD), 2021
6-foot-1, 190-pound right-handed hitting outfielder.  7.66 runner. Strong wrists with a stiff swing.  Solid pop in bat with a mid/pull approach and shows spray contact from ground to air. 79 mph exit velocity.  Catcher- average feet with a pushing release.  Throws are accurate at 70 mph with average carry to bag.  2.10-2.25 pop times. Sets up high and back on heels.  Limited flexibility with a stiff glove and overall raw behind the plate.  Outfield- long arm action with a pushing release.  Average athlete with average accuracy and carry to bag.  75 arm strength from outfield.  On mound; rocks to start motion that gets to balance point.  Long arm action with push release.  Fastball is straight, 72-73 mph.  Breaking ball is sharp with the ability to be thrown for strikes. Change-up has heavy run and sink.

Grafton Stroup SS/RHP, West Central (SD), 2022
5-foot-5, 130-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player.  Small rhythm in hands to a slight body load back.  At times out and around to contact for pull approach.  Bat plane is down to contact, mainly a ground ball hitter and could use more from lower half to drive the baseball. 67 mph exit velocity INF- Ok glove that gets out late.  Wrist is stiff to field with average exchange.  Throws are 60 mph with accuracy and below average carry.  On mound- Step back to swing leg lift.  Gets down mound with ok direction.  Compact arm action, with a tendency to push the baseball at release.  Fastball is straight and was 65-66 mph.  Change-up had average feel and fade.  Did not throw a breaking ball.
