PBR Spotlight Game: #2 Poland Seminary vs #24 Canton South

Poland Seminary hit the ball early and often in defeating Canton South 8-4 for the Hudson Regional Championship and advance to the Division II Final Four in Columbus.

Junior SS Anthony Calcagni started things off with a walk; stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single to left by senior 3B Dom Lipari.

Senior CF DJ Wilson led Canton South right back with a deep triple in the right center gap. Senior LF Mike Montgomery followed with a walk but Poland’s RHP got the next two outs, looking to get out of the jam. Senior 1B then got a big two out RBI single, scoring Wilson. Senior RF Austin Ness followed with an RBI single up the middle scoring Montgomery to give Canton South a 2-1 lead after one inning.

Canton South pushed the lead to 3-1 when sophomore C Khord Moore drew a one-out walk; stole second then came around to score on a two run double by Wilson. Senior RHP Adam Knight looked to be in big trouble after an infield error, but a line drive by 3B Garrett Crum was picked off by 2B junior Jared Burkert and turned into a double play, getting the runner at first before he got back to the bag.

Poland put baserunners on base the next two innings but could not push a run across until the bottom of the 4th inning. Senior LF Nick Romeo and junior CF lead-off the bottom of the 4th inning with singles followed by a one-out walk to senior RF Marty Malenic to load the bases. After a pitching change, Lipari greeted new pitcher Crum with a big 2-RBI double to left center. Lipari advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored after an infield error to make the score 5-3.

Canton fought back again as Crum hit a one-out double to left center and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Ness, making the score 5-4 in favor of Poland.

Poland added two runs in the 6th inning after consecutive infield errors and a huge two-out, two RBI single by White. It was the fourth hit on the day for White. Lipari added an insurance run in the seventh to make the final score 8-4.

Canton South finishes the season with a 23-8 record and a District championship.

Poland Seminary takes a 27-2 record and a regional championship to Columbus for the State Finals.
